Miranda is the better option at 3B. Arraez is the better option at 1B. I don’t think Urshela is a good utility option though he did play some SS for the Yankees. I think they have enough infield depth with Lewis, Gorden, Palacios and soon Julien. They probably should spend the dollars elsewhere. This is not a knock on Urshela who would earn his salary. They simply have better cost controlled options.

The Twins Have a Long Man... Or Not
jorgenswest replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Does any team have a pitcher used exclusively as a long man? I think Sands has the least trust in the bullpen. I don’t think he replaces Mahle in a close game. I believe they trust Pagán more in that situation. He is the reliever with options. There will be a game where the Twins get down and he goes in to save the rest of the bullpen followed by a trip to St. Paul after the game. I think the Twins do need a trusted mid game reliever that can go multiple innings. With the addition of Fulmer and Lopez I think Jax can return that role. In the first two months of the season most of his appearances went more than an inning. That shifted when Duffey, Smith and Pagán failed.- 31 replies

Minor League Recap (8/19): No-Hitter, No Problems
jorgenswest replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
It would be a tough add. Isola probably is not close to ready as a catcher. He has only caught 15 games this year and runners have been successful in 30 of 31 stolen base attempts. That is both high volume and a horrible rate. It would be really hard for a contending team to devote a 40 man roster spot to him. Those spots are starting valuable and he has no positional flexibility. Would a tanking team stash him on the 26 man roster? It is hard to imagine as a catcher. They need to develop their pitchers also and I don’t think they would want him behind the plate for 60 or more games. Any team taking him would have to stash him for a year as a pinch hitter/1B/DH. In 2024 they could return him to the minors to try to develop him as a catcher with hopes he can help at catcher at some point in 2025.- 14 replies

Two reasons to not seek an extension would be his age and position at time of free agency. The Twins will already have locked up his prime. By his 30s he may be primarily a DH and his market may be limited. However if they believe he has an elite bat capable of putting up seasons with a wRC+ 160 or better they should get those first few years of free agency. He might have that bat.

I enjoyed listening to the pregame show sharing part of the conversation between Gardy and Baldelli. Gardenhire wasn’t impressed with the distance of the thrown hat and had some tips for Baldelli.

I agree that Stassi does not score from first. He was on the bench. Velazquez probably does. That guy can run.

They had a very fast runner on first taking off with two outs. The ball is slicing to the corner. There is no way that runner holds at third. There may be a chance at the plate but the best chance to win that game In 9 was to catch that ball. We might argue with the defensive positioning. Sierra had just missed a double down the left field line on the previous pitch. He was not catching up to the fastball. Gordon should have been moved closer to the line.

I don’t think I would replace Pagán with any of the options other than Moran and Cotton. I don’t have much more confidence in either but both provide a needed attribute in either being left handed or being able to go multiple innings.

It did make a difference that Cave took second base. If both go on contact you still have a runner on third with one out if a play is made at home. If the Jays hold Cave instead of giving him second on the first pitch the play is riskier.

Could Carlos Correa Opt Back in for 2023?
jorgenswest replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I hope he stays. If he doesn’t stay they might look to Nick Gordon. Gordon had a long stretch of health trouble and had lost strength. That loss impacted his batting and I am guessing his play at shortstop also. I would prepare him for a lot of time in the middle infield in the off-season if Correa opts out.- 88 replies

I like Pagán over Duffey going forward… this year. I would look for a more reliable option than either in the off-season.

These were necessary trades at the deadline and a credit to the drafting and development of talent that can bring back a controllable reliever and starter at the deadline. I hope this is a win for both sides of these trades at the deadline and we see the Twins win the central and a playoff series while the prospects they traded find their way to the major leagues down the road.

Twins Acquire Orioles Closer Jorge Lopez
jorgenswest replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not similar. Dyson’s best season was as a closer in 2016 and his 2018 season was in line with 2019. He was always a reliever.- 113 replies

I was going by the expected batting average. The only home run that game with an expected batting average of 1.000 was Buxton’s. Hosmer’s was in the .900s. Two were centered at .200.

Ryan was at 82 pitches. he was throwing strikes. Two of the home runs had an expected batting average around .200. All were just out of the reach of the outfielder. If he had pitched exactly the same but different conditions/park resulted in two home runs and three outs on the warning track would we be frustrated that he was pulled too early?

I would have left him in. The pitch count was low enough. He was throwing strikes. He got hit hard but all 5 home runs were in the first row. Outfielders made a play on all 5. They need him to be able to work through a struggle and go deep. That didn’t happen last night. If he can’t handle getting beat and coming back stronger then he won’t have a long career in baseball.

I guess it depends what the Reds are looking for in return. If they are looking for the best pitching prospect offered the Twins don’t have anything to offer today that will convince them to make that deal. The Twins don’t have top end pitching prospects. The Reds might get to the deadline without that offer of someone better than Woods-Richardson and turn to the Twins who can add some good bats.

I think their best chance to win was counting on Duran to hold down the 8th and 9th and finding a way to score in the top of the 9th. Neither happened.

I expected Duran was in for two innings. Unfortunately he couldn’t throw strikes and couldn’t make it to the 9th. If Duran does well in the 8th they don’t need Duffey until the 10th at which point they probably still lose with the absent late game offense. The offense could have taken some pressure off by scoring a run or two in the late innings.

The most important addition is a starter to push Gray and Ryan down a slot. Five innings and two runs is a reasonable performance from a bullpen. I would take an ERA of 3.60 overall from the pen. I don’t know how they can come up with the best offer for Castillo but it is essential. They also need to expect Ryan and Gray to go through the order a third time as well as Castillo. That will reduce the burden on the bullpen. Two arms are needed in the pen also but the top prospect capital has to go for Castillo.
