The Twins offense is quite offensive. As per Fangraphs, the Twins have 1 player who has contributed more than 1 WAR. The Rays have 8 players. This is not the best measurement because WAR includes defense contributions, but still it is an indication how poor a number of Twins players have done for the season.

Did the Twins Flip Golden Tickets in Lopez and Cano?
Eris replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins paid a premium for an all star closer to help secure a playoff spot. He fell apart when he got here and did not help the Twins down the stretch. The Twins will lose this trade.- 16 replies

Sorry. No. The Twins gave up good prospects for a front line pitcher the help down the stretch last year and he was put on the DL after 2 starts. Mahle has nothing this year. Did the Twins need pitching help last year. Yes. But trade imploded from the start. The Twins are small market team. The consequences of being wrong on trades like this are harder for the Twins to recover from than some of the large market teams.

Would the Twins Make a Shakeup at Hitting Coach?
Eris replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don’t think a hitting coach is responsible for players swinging at pitches a foot out of the strike zone. It would be interesting to learn how Brent Rooker was able to resurrect his MLB career by doubling his walks and significantly reducing his strike outs. This transformation was over one offseason. He is an example of what is possible with improved plate discipline. edited to add. Brent Rooker had minor league seasons with BB near 14%. He is at career lows with SO even compared to his stats in the minors. -
What should the Twins do with Jose Miranda?
Eris replied to Hunter McCall's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Miranda should be sent down and let Farmer play third until Royce Lewis is ready. At least the team and fans could have the expectation of above average defense at third. The Twins just have too many right handed bats who aren’t getting the job done. Miranda, Correa, and Solano. It is hard to win when a third of the lineup isn’t getting the job done. -
The Twins are the worst hitters with the bases loaded
Eris replied to Shobae's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
The Twins have the third worst team batting average at 0.225. This corresponds to the third worst BABIP. They are tied with SF for the most SO. They are also 25th in OBP. These are not the stats of a team that would be expected to do well when they have an opportunity to score a run. At some level strike outs and the ability to get a base hit matter. -
I used 0.250 because the league average is 0.247. A better approach would be to use WRC+ but the point would have been the same in that there are a lot of Twins hitters who are underperforming league averages. Some of these by a substantial amount https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=10&type=8&season=2023&month=0&season1=2023&ind=0&team=8&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2023-01-01&enddate=2023-12-31&sort=17,d

The Twins lineup in their 12 inning win against the White Sox today (including substitutions) featured 9 players with a batting average below 0.250. While I don’t know if Alex Kirilloff will recover from his injuries, I find it hard to believe that a lineup this anemic can not find room for some who was once considered one of the best hitting prospects in Twins minor league system. As mentioned in the article, he can get at bats playing LF, RF, 1B and DH. Rotate until there is a better solution. By comparison, the Rays had 3 players in their lineup today with a batting average less than 0.260. The White Sox had 5 players with a BA less that 0.250.

“bringing Correa to the plate. The Twins superstar, however, struck out swinging, and the game was over” On a ball that was at least a foot off the plate Almost painful to watch the poor plate discipline from a lot of the Twins batters Also Jeffers got thrown out at 3rd base with 2 outs on boneheaded base running. The Twins challenged and lost. They really needed the lost challenge later when Castro was called out stealing 2B but was really safe

It was known that Mahle had shoulder issues before the trade last year. https://www.mlb.com/news/tyler-mahle-reds-injury-shoulder-strain

Curious as to whether or not the Twins could have played the game under protest. It was no longer a judgment call as to if he had sticky stuff on his gloves. It was noticed by the umps who presumably deemed this incidental (this part is a judgment call) and asked him to remove it. He did not comply (perhaps this non-compliance is also considered an umpire judgment call). In any event, playing the game under protest would have forced the league to explain why the Yankee pitcher got special treatment, not once but twice. Likely the protest would have been denied but it would have placed a greater spotlight on the issue.

Twins' Season May Hinge on Bounce Backs from Outfielders
Eris replied to Hunter McCall's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not sure I agree with the bit about Gallo playing excellent defense. Maybe at 1B. With his brief stint in RF it seems that Gallo could not catch 2 balls that Kepler would have made look easy. Gallo has a cannon. Maybe we are spoiled by watching Kepler all these years. And they are both on the DL.- 25 replies

The article is probably quite on. I probably disagree the most with the assessment of Kenta Maeda. Maeda has always been a good pitcher and I see no reason why he will not come back. Part of this is wishful thinking but expect him to get stronger as the season progresses. Mahle. I cringe at what the Twins gave up for him.

Future Twins Weigh in on an Electronic Strike Zone
Eris replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I like the idea of robo umps as missed balls or strikes affect the outcome of the game. Perhaps an intermediate solution would be to get rid of or prevent umpires behind home plate who can not correctly call balls and strikes above a certain grade level. The later will never happen so it’s robo umpires. With regards to the future value of catchers, the ability to call a good game is still critical. This is harder to determine statistically, but pitchers know. More emphasis will also be placed on caught or preventing stealing. Maybe a pitcher catcher combo that allows 80 % or higher stolen base percentage should not be used.- 60 replies

Ranking the Twins Weakest Positions
Eris replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
LF. Larnach had 1.1 WAR last season playing in 25 games. If he is healthy for even half the season he should be able to put up at least 2 WAR. The position to be worried about is 3B as Miranda has not been tested there defensively. Of course he is an option at first base as well.- 22 replies

Any player whose contributes negative value defensively is a primary candidate to see more time at DH. This explains why Luis Arraez is towards the top of games played at DH. Based on last years defense, Jose Miranda might see more time at DH. Hoping he plays solid D at third.

Where is Joe Mauer’s Benefit of Perception?
Eris replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The baseball hall of stats has Mauer well above Molina in terms of Hall of Fame worthiness. According to the hall of stats website, Molina should not be inducted into the HoF. This will serve as a useful test of the perception of Mauer vs that of Molina. http://www.hallofstats.com/position/c- 38 replies

Where is Joe Mauer’s Benefit of Perception?
Eris replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am disappointed that the contract keeps coming up. Reality is that Joe Mauer’s career was cut short by a career altering concussion. Of which he was still having symptoms the year he retired. Would there be the same level of discussion about the contract if his career would have been altered by a back injury suffered in, e.g., a home plate collision. Twins and their fans were robbed of truly great careers from Mauer, Justin Morneau, and to a lesser extent Corey Koskie—all because of career altering concussions. But because Mauer was in a different stage of his contract we somehow feel differently about his injury.- 38 replies

Forgotten Twins Greats: Dave Goltz
Eris replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Matt, thank you for the well written article. It made my Sunday. -
For HoF voting, he will be compared to his contemporaries. Francisco Lindor is clearly the best. Correa is grouped with Trea Turner and Xander Bogaerts. Therefore it is doubtful that he makes it. Unless, perhaps, Correa delivers 2 or 3 World Series titles for the Twins while earning MVP honors along the way. Even then, he will still be compared to Lindor for HoF voting.

Baseball’s Best Outfield Is In Minnesota
Eris replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am a little bit puzzled by the large differences in DRS vs statcast metrics. in the catch probability leaderboard Buxton has 84% catch probability and 8 outs above average. And 66% of 4 star opportunities v Kepler: 69% and 11 OAA, 62% of 4 star opportunities Gallo is 58% and -3 OAA. 22% of 4 star opportunities Obviously one main difference is the OAA and catch probability doesn’t take into consideration arm strength and accuracy, whereas DRS does.- 40 replies

Are the Twins Frontrunners for Carlos Correa?
Eris replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think it would be a mistake for the Twins to offer a 9 year deal that was not contingent on a physical especially since both the Giants and the Mets had enough concerns to scuttle their deals with Correa.- 61 replies
