Creating Consistency for 2024
Whitey333 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The strikeout issue is huge. The FO and managers philosophy of swinging for the fences at all times to me is greatly flawed, especially with two strikes and runners on base. Hitting the ball someplace at least gives you a chance to move the runners. Striking out does nothing. It also adds to the boredom of Twins games. Too many at bats with nothing produced. But hearing Falvey continually backing and praising this approach is frustrating. Why can't we have both?- 23 replies

The Best Case Scenario for Byron Buxton
Whitey333 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wish nothing but the best for Buxton. But here we go again. Off season after off season it's the same refrain. Hoping for Byron to be healthy and productive. 8 years here and he's only been able to play one full season. That's 7 years as a part time player and full time injury list person. When will reality set in for people that he is essentially done? By keeping him as is hampers the rest of the lineup. The Twins have been more than fair with Buxton for 8 years. He's earned full time pay for being a part time player. He has produced very little during that time. Yet people mention him in the same.breath as Joe Mauer and Kirby Puckett. He's done very little on the field in 8 years to have earned that distinction. He is not and never will be a superstar. Superstars play everyday and produce. I wish no ill will for Byron but it's time he and the Twins to consider removing him from the roster, especially if we have another year of injuries and unfulfilled promises. It's right for the team and for Byron Buxton. I'm sure they could find a great non playing role for him as a coach or a team ambassador. It's time to move on. -
Pulling Joe Ryan Was the Correct Decision
Whitey333 replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am not a Rocco fan at all. I believe he is in the bottom quarter of MLB managers. His inability for in game management is shocking. Just as his rigid non flexible use of his pre ordained game plan. But I don't fault him for taking out Ryan so early. Truth be told it was our offense that doomed us and derailed us all year. You aren't going to win too many playoff games only getting 3 hits per game. Just as you won't win by striking out 52 times in 4 games. And then having the GM basically saying he doesn't care a out strikeouts. He says homeruns win ball games. How many games have we lost due to our Inability and unwillingness to put the ball in play with 2 strikes in critical al situations? -
Who do the Twins Keep Through Arbitration?
Whitey333 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Tough decisions this off season. The FO makes me nervous. They had some plusses in their roster development but also a lot of minuses. I'd like to see the Twins improve on the decent but not great season they just had. Improving the Team would show some commitment to the fans. However a bad 2024 in what looks like another bad year for the central division would be a big blow to the organization. Here's hoping for a great Twins off season in 2024.- 44 replies

Buxton? Who's he? If he's as beat up as he has been for 8 years. Yes 8 years all we hear is how great Buxton is. Or wait until next year when he is healthy. When will that be? He's always hurt and Is just a mirage compared to his hype. I'm sorry but it's time to move on from Buxton. I know he has a no trade clause but we are better off without him. He actually is hampering the team.

FS1 Booth: Pierzynski, Wainwright, Amin
Whitey333 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
AJ is very good in the booth. I agree with others that 3 is too many. Wainwright was ok. AJ gives a lot of insight and knowledge to the game. I'd much rather listen to him than some others. I used to really like John Smoltz. Great pitcher excellent insight. But oh how I get so tired of him promoting his old team the Braves. He rarely misses a chance to tell us how great they are or that somehow the playoff system is at fault because " his team" is struggling. It's especially bad when he Is assigned to do Braves games on national TV. Cory Provus on wcco radio broadcast is awesome. Here's hoping the Twins can keep him and Gladden together. -
I know the "eye test" in baseball is almost totally a thing of the past. I do not want robo umpiring of balls and strikes. Yes they miss a lot. But I like the human element still in the game. The big problem for me is the bad ball and strike calls in key at bats and situations. Yes I'm frustrated with home plate umpiring the past few years. But it isn't a Twins thing. All teams and players have legit gripes. It's unfortunate the perception here is the umpiring cost us playoff games. A typical minnesota refrain for all of our teams. If you can't win just blame it on the officiating.

Astros 3, Twins 2: The Season is Over
Whitey333 replied to Thiéres Rabelo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The better team won obviously. Putting Buxton in to ph for MAT was nothing but a slap in the face to Taylor. MAT was a big time player this tear filling in for Buxton. Plus he played great defense. People will miss him next season when Buxton is ok n the il for half the season again. When the going gets tough our offense dissappears again. Keep in mind that we only scored 5 total runs in sweeping Toronto. We struck out 52 times in 4 games against the Astros. Totally unacceptable. That's 52 times we had nothing at bats that produced nothing. The team has a lot of important decisions to make on players. They Twins played like the mediocre team they have been all year. That's just who they are. And blaming the terrible home plate umpiring is true minnesota fan. If we can't win, blame the officials. I do agree however that the home plate umpiring has been bad for a while and is getting much worse. They are awful. But if we had professional hitters it wouldn't be an issue. I do like some of our younger players. But we have s long way to go to be a great team like Houston. I believe our team is teetering between being good and regressing again. Good solid additions are needed. Some of the veteran leadership guys deserve to go. Like always Twins fans are left with nothing but a half empty or half full glass. We will be told all off season what a great job our manager and FO did. It will work. We are supposed to be content with just getting into playoffs or being competitive. Winning a championship is simply not in the Twins model.- 126 replies

Twins Youth Burning Them at the Worst Time
Whitey333 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The simple truth is the Astros are a much better team than the Twins. And it shows. Unfortunately last nights game became an embarrassment and a somewhat closer view of Twins baseball. The Twi s play in a bad division that doesn't provide much opportunity to grow the team. Twins continue to strike out at an alarming, almost laughable rate. The lack of plate discipline and ability or even willingness to adjust during an at bat to the situation has been evident all year. This team has many holes in it and needs more than a tweak to improve next year or even to maintain the status quo. Sonny Gray, a big contributer this year, probably pitched his last game as a Twin. Many others entering free agency. I'm sure the FO is going to blame everything on the unavailability of Buxton and Gallo, two of the most automatic outs on the team. Yes the rookies MUST step up. They look way overmatched.- 57 replies

This Series Means More To Jorge Polanco
Whitey333 replied to Lou Hennessy's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Polanco is awesome. He's been hurt a little more lately but over the several years you could always count on him playing and producing. Unlike some on the team that appear to relish their time (s) on the IL, Polanco would play and contribute. Thanks Jorge. Go Twins!!! -
The home plate umpiring has been bad all year for a lot of teams. They should be embarrassed. Also strikeouts ARE boring. Yes double plays are bad too. But at least the ball was hit. That means they have to make a play on it and could blow it. Plus strikeouts produce nothing. If the team averages over 10 strikeouts per game there is no way they would ground into double plays 10 times. The old(I guess new line) of at least he didn't hit into a double play is so flawed and ironically plus makes no common.sense. last night for example late in the game. Correa was at third with one out and Twins trailing 6-4. Our catcher Jeffers was up. The Astros infield was back. They were going to give us a run for an out. All Jeffers had to do was put the ball in play on the ground anywhere except for the pitcher and its a one run game at 6-5. But no. Like all of our Twins do, he swung for the fences and struck out. Totally wasting the chance to score a run by not employing a Profesional approach to hitting. This swing for a Homer mentality is ok but you have to have situational hitting as well. This Twins team hasn't shown much of that this season.

A few observations. The Twins lost 6-4. There's no rewards for losing. A loss is a loss...it doesn't matter if they played great for 3 innings. Blown opportunities early in the game cost us. I had a bad feeling even after 2 innings. You can't let a great pitcher like Verlander off the hook when you have a chance to get an early lead. Throwing a first pitch fastball to a notoriously first ball hitter deserves a fine for whoever called that pitch. It landed in the bleachers. I have no problems with them starting Ober. He's earned it. Without his good performances throughout the year we wouldn't be in playoffs. Boneheaded baserunning play by Julien should never happen In the bug leagues. They teach you that base running in high school. Maybe he was sick that day. It was not a bad game but not a great one either. Sunday is another day. We are deservedly underdogs anyway. Go Twins! BTW does anyone know why the national league teams have an extra day off in this round and thr American league doesn't? No national league games today but American league teams are playing. Seems like it would be a big advantage for your pitching staffs.

If a pitcher needs to be removed it would seem paddock is the logical choice. I think he will be a good starting pitcher starting in 2024. Buxton: absolutely should not be on any playoff roster at all this year. As in every year with Buxton it's wait until next year. What they are waiting for is another story for another time. After all its been 8 years waiting on him. The team has played much better since he hasn't been clogging up the lineup with his automatic outs. To put him on the roster would be a great disservice to the team and fans. He can't play. Why take a roster spot from someone that has helped the team reach the playoffs. It makes no sense.

It's great we made the playoffs. It's even greater we won a playoff series. I'm hoping we can somehow beat Houston. I think we can. But let's not go overboard here. The two great games against Toronto not withstanding, the Twins season was just so so. They had the easiest schedule in MLB the last two months. And while we improved, let's not forget that most of the time we were beating up on the dregs of baseball. To their credit that's what we should do. That's great. But this manager and FO is not without deserving criticism. Most of the year the team played boring, uninspired, and undisciplined baseball in a joke of a division. Some of their moves have worked. Many have not. All of a sudden because of two wins people are ranting and raving about how great this FO is. The talk has been about a great farm system. What about the prospects we traded to the Reds to get Mahle. He's done for the Twins tet we gave up two players for their starting lineup. What about the prospects we traded to Orioles to get Lopez? The one relief pitcher is an all star the other probably plays for Orioles next season. What have the great prospects done that the Twins received in the Berrios trade? Yes they have made some moves that worked out and some that were bad. Sonny Gray? Good move but now since he is likely to go to free agency the Twiill lose him and get nothing in return. Anyway, I'm glad they won. I hope they win it all. But let's not jump to conclusions and paint this FO and organization great just yet. No matter how far they go they have a lot of important roster decisions this off season. Go Twins.

Great win Twins!! It was fun again. I guess being (im)patient is worth it. Just like buying tickets yesterday. I was able to purchase online a nosebleed seat for under $10. Yes and I just walked the concourse and watched. I never sat in those seats. Ticket sales were not that great and the price dropped a lot. Especially the resale market. I'm sure after the win prices would be back to normal today. Awesome win Twins!! Let's fi ish off the Blue Jays today. Go Twins

Video: Twins Postseason Roster Prediction
Whitey333 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nice report on potential playoff roster. I too struggle with Ober. He has earned the spot. We wouldn't be in playoffs without his many stellar performance. Also Buxton in no way shape or form should be on the playoff roster. He can't play the outfield and is a poor DH. He's had a poor season and does not deserve the spot. When he was playing he just became an automatic out. Great well thought out article!- 1 reply

Interesting article. It all predicated of course on the players performing at that high level. While it could happen, it could just as easily backfire. Duran has been anything but lights out since the all star break. He can be dominating of course and that's what we count on and hope for. I'm hoping our starters pitch so well that Rocco let's them pitch at least 6 innings, maybe 7 if warranted. But if Lopez and Gray aren't on their top game we are in trouble. I'm hoping we break the playoff lising streak this year and perhaps even advance to the ALDS. Go Twins

My list would be, in order of preference for twins to play in wild card round: 1. Texas Rangers. I think we match up well with them and they won't have Sherzer. 2. Mariners. This would be tough as I think the games would be very close and could go either way. 3. Astros. They worry me the most due mainly to their winning pedigree. Also Manager Dusty Baker would easily out manage Rocco. Hope this is the year we win a playoff game. We could advance to the second round. Go Twins!!

The Front Office Was Right to Bet on Their Roster
Whitey333 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This FO IMO is still one of the poorest we have had in years. This roster is filled with holes and question marks. I'm hoping we at least win one playoff game and maybe even advance to the next round but what if the unthinkable happens and they lose 2 playoff games and extend the streak to 20? Will that leave a great taste in fans mouths? It would make the regular season pointless I think they blew their chance to improve their roster at the trade deadline. At the trade deadline we had the easiest schedule left in all of baseball and in a joke of a division. Yes they played well enough to win it. But the other central teams total disinterest in being competitive was just as big if not more of a factor. I sure hope we do well in the playoffs it's been sooooo long. I'm sorry, but I can't help but being skeptical.- 34 replies

Silly article really. Gray has had a great season with the Twins and I hope against all odds he stays with the Twins after this season. He's a very good but not elite pitcher. As you kind of condemn the traditional stats as not projecting the desired results, you use the "new" analytics to make above average players appear great.
-
Should be interesting playoffs. The Twins will be able to start their best three in Lopez, Gray, and Ryan in a short series. Let's not forget though that whomever we face they will be starting their best pitchers as well. The Twins have been playing mediocre ball most of the season. They will probably enter the playoffs not only with the poorest division winning record amongst all the division winners but also the poorest overall playoff team record of all teams this year. I do think thus is the year we at least win a playoff game and MAYBE advance to the second round. Last playoff win was 2004. Wow. Go Twins!!
-
This team has beennone of the most ist frustrating and frequently boring teams that past two or three years. I think with a good manager we could have 5-10 more wins. Rocco is definitely in the bottom third of major league managers. He has poor in game management, is frequently out managed by his opponent, and over thinks key situations. The team is ok. But you never know how they will play and manage. I can see them winning two series but can also see them getting swept in the opening round. Go Twins

What Should the Twins Do with Trevor Larnach?
Whitey333 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Twins should move on from Larnach, for hus sake. He's proven he can hit major league hitting. Sure he has holes in hus swing. Look at Wallner. I love the guy but he'd been in a horrendous slump since August 7th. Yet the keep playing him. Look, I like both Polanco and Kepler but we probably have players that can take their place. Gallo? Don't even go there. He's probably the worst 11 million ever spent. Oh that's right we have Buxton. Anyway some interesting decisions will need to be made this off season. Go Twins!- 78 replies
