The minor-league season is quickly running toward an end. On Tuesday, the DSL season will end. The full season affiliates have three more weeks with the Saints going a week longer. This week found some ups and downs for the affiliates. The Mussels went 4-2 against their top competitor. The Saints had a rough week, and yet, they had the hitter selected as hitter of the week. Check out all that happened in the Twins organization on Monday and last week.

Box Score

In the DSL Twins penultimate game of the 2024 season, Eduardo Beltre did Eduardo Beltre things in leading his team to a big win. In this game, Beltre went 3-for-5 with his ninth double, 11th home run, and four RBI. For the season, he is now hitting .336 with a 1.096 OPS. He also stole his 10th base of the season.

Melvin Rodriguez put together his fifth strain solid start for the DSL squad. In this game, he tossed four scoreless innings. He gave up three hits and walked two while striking out four batters. Jose Vasquez gave up two runs on four hits and two walks in three innings. He had five strikeouts. Aiberson Ventura ended the game with four strikeouts over two, one-hit innings.

K. Culpepper now to face the level of competition he faced in college.  Let's hope he does well, especially with the predictors.  Low k rate, high exit velocity, barrels, that sort of thing.

Unfortunately, picks B Kyle DeBarge and C Billy Amick haven't shown all that well at Fort Myers yet.  Both should be going to Cedar Rapids with Culpepper in your average scenario.  FWIW, I liked neither pick but did like their fourth guy, Dasan Hill.  I don't really understand the DeBarge pick except in the most base way: vs bad college competition he looked like Luke Keaschall looked vs good college competition.  I think this was a scouting department failure along the lines of Noah Miller (different profile).

With Amick I think it was super obvious he'll never hit.

I'm not all that fond of the Culpepper pick, either.  Basically, the draft ran out of really good college hitters early, and that meant it was a crapshoot when the Twins were up.  I probably would have reached for the Kentucky OF if I stayed with the normal strategy, but this may have been the year to take a chance on a HS kid like Slade Caldwell, someone with a great hit tool.  But Culpepper may be as good as any here, so while I would have passed, showing xbh power and low K rate starting in A+ and above will satisfy me they did as well as a reasonable person might expect.  I would have grabbed P Trey Yesavage had he lasted one more pick.

I'm not sure that's true. Yes, on some days, he'll face some top prospects. On other days, he'll face 5th starters or back-end of A-ball bullpen guys. For the most part, most division 1 players, even those at top colleges, don't get to Low A, much less High A.

What these players do in their draft years really doesn't matter at all. Pitchers don't pitch in games (or certainly not more than 1 or 2). College hitters probably haven't played on any sort of regular basis for 1-3 months when they sign and report. It's just about getting them some pro at-bats, with the wood bat, getting used to playing every day, having an away-from-home job for maybe the first time, meeting tons of new people, learning the organization's philosophies on nutrition, weight room plans, and how they use analytics and what is available to them.

In my mind, if you're picking after about 18-20 in the first round of the draft, you have to make a choice. You aren't going to find the perfect player, so you find a player that meets what you're looking for and try to determine what they can work on and develop. With Culpepper, in my opinion (which doesn't mean much, I'm sure), you've got a nice mix of high floor because of his current skill set in the field and at the plate. He also has some tools that he can work on and the Twins player development can work on with him. So, I think there is a chance for some fairly high ceiling too. He can hit for average, some power, run well, play solid defense in the infield, throw, etc.

Of note, I do enjoy when they draft high school athletes as they've got all the tools, so Caldwell would have been a lot of fun too.

And, to your final point, I believe that it is very much possible that the Twins targeted Yesavage when the Blue Jays took him. But I think that the result is still a tremendous pick (considering the spot in the round).

Normally you see more pitchers injured during the year than hitters. Not for the Twins this year. Unless they came into the season with past significant injuries, most of the pitchers stayed healthy. But look at our hitters and the top ones all seemed to miss significant time due to injury.

Does Payton Eeles get a call up.  Right now he looks like a better option than Julien.

With DSL ending will they put players like Beltre into the upper levels?  It seems like a good time to remove some of the players we know will not make the big leagues or upper minors.

Hard to see all the ILs on the list, especially in our top 5.  But reading all the MLB news the number of IL players is significant all over the league.  How do they stay healthy?

Unlikely at this point.  Mainly it is a 40 man roster issue, they already will have some decisions to make, putting him on the 40 will make things even more complicated.  If they do, that would be a crazy rise for him too.  I really like the kid and surprised on updated prospect lists, in MLB page he is not even in top 30.  I get he does not have the draft status and he is short, so scouts have no thoughts he will ever do anything, but his numbers do not lie. Other than 9 games at North Woods League in 2021 he has hit over .300, OBP over .400 and slugging over .400 in college and each minor league stop.  His OPS is generally near .900.  Yes, he does not have a ton of power, but he can hit it out and is not just a singles hitter.

Beltre has been amazing all year showing his power and patience at the plate. Two very nice building blocks for future success.  He is third in the entire DSL in OPS and tied for 2nd in Home Runs.,  DSL numbers don't mean much as the pitching isn't the greatest there, but it sure is nice to have a top performer there.  His batting line as it stands is solid all the way around. We'll see how he does against much better breaking balls and pitch sequencing in the FCL.  It's a big jump from the DSL to the FCL and it will be interesting to see how he does.

As everyone knows I am a big Eeles backer\believer. What he has been able to do I have never seen before and likely never will again.  A player outside the top 20 rounds of the draft making it to AAA in less than a full year of pro ball.  It should be impossible, but I guess no one told Peyton Eeles that.

Tough to see Morris have a tough game but I am glad they moved him up to get some AAA experience  so he has an idea what to work on over the offseason.  It's also the end of the season when most arms are tired so not too surprised that there might not be much gas left in the tank this late.

It's been a fun year watching the farm system rise up the ranks.  Let's hope the new guys keep it going.

Will any of the minor league teams make the playoffs? It appears the Mussels have a chance. Wichita is unlikely but some of those players may get called up to St. Paul to finish the season.

Looks like Fort Myers is in 1st place in the 2nd half. I "believe" first place would mean they make the playoffs. Someone else can confirm.

It's great that Eeles is getting time in the OF now. Being able to cover multiple positions ala Willi Castro, will make it a lot easier to find him a roster spot when he's ready. I really wish either him or Keirsey Jr would have gotten the call when Buxton went down rather than recalling Julien. I really want to see what these young kids can do. Not an ideal time in a playoff run I know, but for a week or two until Buxton's ready? Keirsey especially could be a real spark plug for our lineup.

There are only 40 spots on the roster. If you add someone like Keirsey or Eeles to "see what they can do" then you'll lose someone else forever.

Yup, that's the trouble. Also the only reason Keirsey hasn't gotten his chance too I think. Too bad Severino doesn't play 2nd. Switch hitter, MASSIVE power, and he's already on the 40 man roster. Could he do any better than Julien until Lee comes back? The home run potential certainly is tempting, but only if he can keep his strikeouts in check, which has been his biggest issue so far in his pro career.

Posted

The Twins would have called Keirsey up if they believed he'd be valuable at the MLB level. Martin and Keirsey have similar skill sets, and while Martin is a RHB, if the Twins felt Keirsey was a better player than Martin, I think they would have called Keirsey's number.

Keirsey's defensive metrics look awfully similar to Austin Martin's, his base running value, too. But Martin has superior OBP skills, he's younger, and he has a better scouting pedigree.

Keirsey hasn't been good since his return from the IL in June. .249/.317/.367 OPS .684, ISO .119, 8.0% BB, 23.6% K, wRC+ 78 over his past 177 plate appearances in AAA.
He wasn't good in 2022 at AA at age 25.
He wasn't good in 2023 at AAA at age 26.

It's hard enough for younger players with consistent good performances in the high minors to translate that to value at the plate at the MLB level, let alone inconsistent production from older non top prospect players.

Severino became very limited at 2B as he gained size and lost mobility. Originally, he was signed out of the Dominican by the Braves to be a 2B, and the Twins even experimented with him at SS after we were able to grab him when the Braves were forced to forfeit him for violating league rules.

He could probably work at 3B as it's reported he has a strong arm, but he's blocked right now. I think the Twins will probably call him up when rosters expand. He'll certainly be in the mix with Payton Eeles for a call up IMHO.

I don't see anyone new getting a callup in September. Buxton, Correa and Lee are on the injured list. They get one extra spot. If all 3 come back in September then they need to send 2 players currently on the MLB roster to AAA. Most likely scenario is Lee and either Martin or Julien end up back in AAA. If they want to add a 3rd catcher then all three players will head to St. Paul with Camargo coming up to the Twins.

If they need to add an infielder I think Diego Castillo is more likely than Eeles because they can remove Castillo from the roster in the offseason. They will want to stash Eeles off the 40 man roster this winter.

The difference there is Keirsey can become a free agent after the season, so although they know what they have in him already, the "see what he can do" phrase makes some sense. Then again, with only two extra roster spots in September and a team that will be vying for a playoff spot, that isn't enough reason.

As it relates to Utility types (infield and outfield), I would think that Helman would be the call ahead of Eeles yet, so long as he is healthy. Again, he can be a free agent as well after the season.

Could be the case if there are no other injuries. I don't know if the 40 man roster spot is all that hard to free up at this point.

I know a few guys who could be DFA'D to free up some 40 man roster spots. Okert and Farmer for sure. I'd say Margot as well, but of course we will ride it out with these guys the rest of the year rather than trying anyone else ALA Severino, Keirsey, Eeles....
