2024 MLB Draft Day 2 Thread

Someone may have already said this (I haven't gone through all comments), but every player (minus the one pitcher) is college hitter.   I kind of like it.   You know a little more about what you have with hitter in their 20s.   Twins, I think, feel they can make pitchers improve easier than hitters.

It's literally completely random odds wise at this point. They seriously lack catching.... So I figured there would be catchers taken.... Mostly surprised at the lack of pitchers.

In genenral we usually start going hot and heavy on pitchers starting around the 7th round.  I would guess you will see several.  Usually pitchers in the 7th round to 15th round is where we have found our best under the radar pitching prospects in the last several years.

Eli Jones seems more like a Terry Ryan era pick.

 Likely has 1 elite pitch they want to build around,  and likely increase velocity.

I agree, but I'd expect them to pick someone with either a high K rate, a big frame, or great command and build off that. Not saying it's a bad pick, and my expectations aren't too high at this stage of the draft. Just thought the pick didn't fit their usual M.0.

Brooks Lee's dad was a connection to one of our earliest picks. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Walker Jenkins' supporting crew has had a little input into some of the South Carolina picks late. Stranger things have happened.. people know people who know people..

I've known Jaime since he was 11 years old, and he's basically a little brother to me. For those of you saying he had a pop up year this past year, he hit over .300 each year at FSU, and his first two years was on some pretty horrid FSU teams (due to pitching). I've watched him develop over the years from a string bean to big stick whose got power, can fly, and quite honestly, if the Twins are smart, they'll try him out behind the dish, since he's a natural catcher and played there til he got to FSU, where he was blocked by upperclassmen his first season (but they needed his bat so they threw him in LF and RF).  Dude's got a cannon, and dude has the 'I will bust my tail no matter what' mentality, so he'll be easy to root for.  Am I biased? Sure. But watching him develop over the years has been pretty remarkable, and he was holding his own in a lineup with two top 15 guys. Had he stayed at C, he'd have been a top 15 pick as well.  If they keep him in the OF, he'll stay in the corners (probably RF) and could easily develop to a top guy.

Under the radar, possible money move, sure, but the Twins got themselves a good one. He's HYPE right now

Great post.  I mentioned pop up prospect as not on any current top list, but yes he has been a very solid hitter over his college career,  where he really improved this year was a big jump in power.  If he really can be a solid catcher my guess is the Twins will give him that chance, even with picking 2 others. They love positional flexibility.  Will be interesting to watch his development.  As I stated his stats were just as good as the other 2 FSU players taken in the first round.

First pick I can say I was actually on before the draft.  I guess I could have probably predicted Amick as a Twin with some foreknowledge that he'd still be available in the second round

Good bat, it'll be another project on defense but they've pick a few of those types at C in the recent past.

I think it's strange that they finally selected a catcher Diaw but looks like he's so banged up he'll never last at catcher very long if ever

Peyton Carr looks to be an interesting pick. Lots of power and more walks than Ks in his collegiate career.

Had he gone to most other schools (originally committed to Stetson and then outgrew them), he would have exclusively caught from day 1, so if the Twins are smart, they'll throw him back there. He was in the 98th percentile in the country for his pop time as a HS catcher.

Not the draft I was expecting as it was supposedly a weak one for bats after the first ten picks and then again after the second round.  So seeing the Twins go with 7 bats in the first six rounds was surprising.  I did like most of the picks as they all seem to have pretty good bat to ball skills and some with power and they chose guys with position flexibility for the most part. Lots of interesting Catcher combo's as they must be somewhat worried about a Jefffer's successor?

While the current farm isn't particularly deep in good hitting position prospects there are top 100 guys at pretty much every level and the big League team appears pretty stocked except outfield. I guess I didn't see a huge need for this many bats especially likely fast moving college bats, but the Twins felt otherwise.

The system is also in need of more pitching depth especially at the lower levels and pretty much every level for pen arms.  I was kind of hoping they would do what Cleveland did this year and go primarily after pitching on day 2.  There is still time for day 3 arms where they tend to find gems, but I think larger numbers would give them more chances to hit on more arms. Only 4 arms in the first 12 picks was not what I was hoping for so hopefully they have some interesting arms lined up for day three.  They are going to need a lot of them just to balance out this draft.

Not sure what to think about this draft so far.  There are a lot of potential really good contact bats with one hopefully elite HS Lefty Pitcher.  Hopefully they find the arms they need tomorrow.

It appears as though we are stocking up on hitting prospects. I wonder if their plan is to trade away some of the older but still high potential prospects in order to get the pitching they want/need.
