High School, to me was always the toughest ,  Parents are the worst at times ,  Hope its gotten better, many years ago for me ,

I never did competitive baseball, but refereed soccer at amateur levels for years. High school was always the worst because not only were there parent issues, but the student sections were brutal. Several times I was running up and down in front of the student section as a linesman and had to listen to the profanity, vulgarity, and even threats coming from fellow students. Several schools routinely had police escorts to our cars. And Portland is not a city that most would associate with gangs and crime.

Can't say not out, it sounds too much like out. It's an emphatic safe arms and maybe slap the ground. Voice can be safe, no catch, no he didn't etc but never not out. No one hears the not part.

As to your first question about what we do when we screw up or there is a chaos play? All you can do is conference with your partner(s) and piece it together as best as possible.  I'm comfortable overturning myself if my partner is confident, not all are but it's a much better presentation of confidence than not doing it. Sometimes we do conference for appearances.

It's really hard to anticipate what 13-18 year olds will do on a baseball field, even the higher level travel ball stuff I work. City league games are like recess sometimes. In a lot of ways the higher levels are easier to work as it's easier to know where things and people are supposed to be.

Good thought on not using the "not out."

They did conference on a couple plays, which was good. Though it was the home plate ump that botched this play and both were inexperienced, it was clear that the home plate ump felt more comfortable than the base ump did.

The crowd was decent about both plays I noted. There was the initial, "No way" reaction, but they let it go pretty quickly and didn't let things build. It also didn't help the umps that the field had very little foul territory, so pretty much everyone was right on top of the play. Had the two teams been at the other site, we would have been much further from the action.

At least in our area, the ADs and principals, etc., have taken a fairly active role in approaching belligerant fans. It also helps that the games that I go to are usually small schools where everyone knows everyone, so they don't want to be perceived as a jerk when they are seen in the grocery store or at church.

I liked the touch of the former AD. At soccer games, when a fan was getting out of hand, he would give them a yellow card. The card seemed to have the effect of bringing at least a bit of lightheartedness, and it tended to make the parent stop and think, "Yeah, I'm being kinda stupid here."

They are really really struggling to find enough officials/referees for most high school sports over here in PA. Too much abuse from the insane parents. I know they’ve had to move some Friday night football games to different days due to lack of officials. People are insane. At all levels and in all sports.

The coaches are our biggest allies most of the time. Same as with their players, they will tell their fans to shut it before I even have to say anything. If the ump needs yelled at, I'll be doing it, type thing. Most experienced coaches are on that wavelength. They can also be ejected for their fans behavior at a lot of locations so they have that motive as well.

Fortunately it's usually not that bad. I do put a lot of effort into knowing my job and hustling to be in position and I know that helps to get a neutral crowd. Don't get in the way of a good game.

I think the shortage is pretty universal. Work takes me to several states, and a Nebraska parent said their area is doing the same thing. They take turns having Thursday games to help the situation.

If I was 10 years or so younger (and didn't have glaucoma), I'd still consider giving it a shot. I think my temperament would do pretty well. Depending on how long I work, I may still get my starter's license for track and field. My body would hold up to that, and there's definitely a need there as well.

Funny thing about that last change up strike 3 by Jax. If it would had been hit out of the park he would have called it a mistake as he hung it right in the middle of the zone - couldn't have been more middle middle. As it was, he is thinking it was a great pitch.
