Not entirely Keuchel's fault, but that's one of the problems when you give up so many base runners.

Kepler should have caught it.  Farmer should have went to 1st with that deflected ball.  But yes, those things combined with a couple solid base hits and it leads to trouble.

I was watching the shadow live and thought about it before the miss, like uhoh.  Still doesn't matter, sun in the eyes is an error.

Actually sun in the eyes has never been an error. Even when scorekeepers had some sense of pride, if an outfielder didn't get a glove on a fly ball it was almost never ruled an error.

Similar for losing balls in the metrodome roof.

so far so bad. Keuchel giving up some real hard hit balls. Down 3-0 already doesn't bode well...as O;s and Guardians are watching intently and not liking what they see. And we agree.

Yandy Diaz had quite the career breakout at age 31 and what a career year at age 32.

I don't know how or why, but the Rays seem to do this regularly.  Find players that struggled elsewhere and turn them into gems.  Luke Raley is another.  In a small sample size, Zack Little is looking like another.

But its getting the glove on the ball that's been the differentiator, not the sun.

Kepler didn't get a glove on that.

And your original point was "sun in the eyes is an error."

Which hasn't been true at least in my (considerable) lifetime.

unfortunately Twins hitters do what they often do best...k! And quickly. Gotta chip away fast before Keuchel gives up 3 more and the game is pretty much over.

I looked at his page expecting him to be 24 or 25, didn't put it together it was the same Diaz that played with Cleveland years ago.  Harold Ramirez another one having a career year at 29.  I think it also just goes to show that not everyone breaks out at an early age as well.  Tampa is willing to give guys AB's who have talent, but haven't put it together yet.

It certainly looked like it went off his glove. Even MLB has the log as being deflected by Max.

I couldn't get the freeze but it clearly deflected.

My point is that an error is an error, regardless of the sun in the eyes.  There is no discount for conditions.

9 years and 31 days days of service time.  for Dallas K.   needs 10 years for full mlb retirement pay,   found this intresting!!

Surprised I guess that he doesn't have more time, as it seems like he has been around forever.

In terms of full mlb retirement pay, I doubt he is worried.  BRef reports his career earnings as 99 million.  He isn't checking out the dollar menu...

So if a shortstop doesn't throw out a runner when a ball hits a pebble and deflects out of his reach, is that an error?  Since there's no discount for conditions...
