Twins Trade for Set-up Man Michael Fulmer

Gipson Long likely would have been lost in the rule V draft. We found something that could help us this year.  This is good trade.

He turns 25 in December and had success at high-A and then not success at AA.  His start last week was good.  He'd be eligible for Rule-5 but IMO not a cinch to be snapped up as there are others with similar profiles I'm sure.

I think Fulmer moves the needle more for the Twins than for any other MLB team. We have Lopez, Duran, Jax and nobody else. Fulmer may be nothing more than a hair above average, but going from Pagan/Smith to Fulmer in mid-leverage situations is going to have a huge effect on the outcome of games.

Jharel Cotton pitched three nice innings last nite.  Aaron Sanchez had a pretty nice start too.  And in less than 24 hours it’s ta-ta.  Baseball can be a tough biz.   I like the moves today if it leads to some post season success.  Losing Steer and Encarnarcion-Strand hurts a bit.

Ashbury this trade pretty much answered whether someone would have been interested in taking him in the rule V draft. Detroit is obviously willing to add him to their 40 man roster and would have been willing to take a flyer on him.

Otoh trading for him means adding him to the 40 but then having as many as 3 option years before he must be on a major league roster.  Rule 5 forces you to roster him that first year, all year.  Wheels within wheels.

Teams trade for players and let 'em go at the end of the year all the time. 

This trade confirms nothing about the future.

Not mentioned in the OP or comments is that Fulmer has some experience as a closer, stepping in pretty impressively last year when the Detroit pen got hit by injury.

Problem is that most of them are injured - and Balazovic is having a horrid year. Varland and Raya are doing alright but that's about it.

Lots of injuries, but no more than on the MLB club. SMW is pitching well. Really hoping Jordy Blaze turns it around.

I see Fulmer is throwing his slider 65%  of the time this year. Up from 40% last year and 20-25% as a starter. The Twins do like their sliders.

Not a big fan of Fulmer but probably better than without him. Probably a step up from Duffy though. SGL wasn't exactly lighting it up since getting promoted either. Now, can Rocco figure out how to use this new staff?  Will he turn Mahle into a 5 inning starter like he did Gray?
