tony&rodney Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2022 Posted July 31, 2022 Gotta say that the old way to look was: 1) What is the deal at the AllStar Game; 2) Finally check the standings on August 1; and 3) What does the schedule look like in the last two months. The Twins have a good team that surely needs at least a couple of pitchers but they are going to be in first place on August 1. That is huge. September might be a tough row but August seems doable. Despite wanting Falvey to do something big before the trade deadline, I'm a happy Twins fan because the team is interesting and winning enough right now.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted July 31, 2022 Posted July 31, 2022 I like that we won. But This is just incredibly stupid: we had our nr 1 starter on the mound, he gave up 1 run and threw only 79 pitches, yet he's out after 5, leading to using 5 relievers, including frigging Duran in the 8th inning with a 6 run lead. I've defended Rocco's pitcher usage, but this is insane.

I don't have anything to base this on, but I feel like Duran has played in back to back games a lot this year... and I wonder what type of impact that has had on him. I also think your spot on, regarding Gray... and really the only thing I can think of is that he has had some bad games this year. I don't think they trust any starter. But you have to take pressure off your bullpen at some point, and the best way to do that is allow your SPs to pitch later into the game.

He gets into his usual antics, walking a #8 hitter and plunking the #9. HR predictably comes next. No worries. He gets the next two guys out. Pitch count 28. Unavailable to mess up tomorrow's game. Rocco's playing chess while you're busy playing checkers.

He’s had all these days off sandwiched around a couple of blow outs. He had his mind made up before the game what he was going to do…and by god he did it. Never mind the game as it evolved. He is what he is.

Duran has only pitched on consecutive days twice, 1 inning each time. A perfect 1,2,3 inning against Cleveland on May 14, and a 4 batter outing on July 10 where he gave up a HR in the 8th inning of a 6-5 win.

Because I prefer self-serve, and baseball-reference.com is an immense buffet table, let me offer this tip. Each player has a "game log" for each season. Here is Duran's: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=duranjh01&t=p&year=2022 Locate the DR column, which stands for Days Rest, and click on it, and it will sort the list. You can then quickly determine* that there were two such days (as a fellow poster kindly reported). You'll learn also that he's been practically immaculate with 1 day rest, and for some crazy Small Sample Size reason has gotten himself in trouble with 3 days rest. Hope, as they say, this helps. * You could also just scan the column visually, but risk missing one of the instances you might care about.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2022 Posted July 31, 2022 I came to see if the thread got better, given they won. But all I see is more complaining. This site has really gone downhill in terms of logic and fun.
