Fun With Numbers

If the season were to end today:

The Twins would play a game 4 and game 5 against the White Sox and Indians to determine who won the AL Central.

If they were not victorious, they would then have to play a game 6 and 7 against the other loser from the AL Central and the 1st loser from the AL East.

PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS PEOPLE!

Your 2013 Minnesota Twins have drawn the most walks (16) in major league baseball.

According to official baseball rules.

Rule 7.05©: in advancing a runner shall touch first, second, third and home base in order. If runner touches the bases in reverse order, one run will be taken off the score and a negative home run will be assessed to the player and team by the official scorer.

In 1912... The St. Louis Browns lost to the New York Highlanders 0 to -1.

Its like rolling back the odometer.

I can't find that in my book - you must have an older version. ;)

I'm not sure what to think about this.

A baseball team called the Highlanders. A negative run in a sport that will forever be divided over the value of 'stats'.

What is there to think about, for heaven's sake? That's like debating the artistic merit of a George Lucas/Peter Jackson mashup where Frodo, Gandalf, Chewie, and Sail Barge Princess Leia blow up the Death Star by shooting the One Ring down the exhaust port.

Let go. Enjoy.

Staying with numbers:

86% of all residents polled in Estonia have no response to it either.

87% of all residents polled in Estonia fully understand the behavior of Amy Winehouse.

Twins starters have a collective 2.95 K/9. That is dead last in the majors and is nearly half of the 2012 K/9 of 5.53. Twins starters were also dead last in K/9 last year.

And Hendriks feels the need to outdo the first 3 starters and lower the overall K/9 to 2.78.

What's the latest in a season that an entire division has had the exact same record? Obviously it has to be more than 4 games but looking at the standings just got me thinking.

Parmelee and Plouffe have more SB's and less CS than Mastroianni or Hicks.

Twins runners have been caught stealing in 3 times out of 16 total in MLB.

Aaron Hicks has 2nd most strikes outs in MLB.

Josh Willingham has the 3rd.

Joe Mauer has the 15th.

As a team the Twins have the second most SO's in baseball but are still 10k's behind Houston.

Ahh, the wonders of SSS and a 3-0 record in one run games! The Twins have managed a +3 run differential despite poor to middling stats. Everybody in the AL has played at least six games (two teams have played seven) and here are some rankings in team stats: The Twins are tied for 5th in runs per game despite the 12th best OPS and 14th best Slugging. They do have the 4th best OBP fueled largely by having the most walks. On the pitching side, the Twins have the 6th best ERA (they are 8th in runs allowed per inning) despite having the 12th best WHIP and the fewest strikeouts in the league.

Through 9 games, Aaron Hicks has drawn as many walks as Joe Mauer. In fewer PAs, I might add.

ML pitchers OBP: .170

Aaron Hicks OPS: .165

On a positive note, in a sorry blowout, Hicks had his best single-game K% performance of his young major league career, only 20%!

I thought about this after the KC sweep and decided not to look it up because it would be too depressing. And I was right.

Twins starters combined have struck out 19 opposing batters this season through 10 games. Mets starter Matt Harvey has struck out 19 opposing batters in his 2 starts.

After today, that's 11 Ks... Aaron hicks on the other hand has struck out 17 times.

I don't think today's game is included in that 17. So make it 20 K's for Aaron in 46 PA's with 2H and 3BB's.

Interesting hypothetical: Were Aaron Hicks to face the Twins starting staff exclusively, what would happen? Guy that K's all the time vs staff that Ks nobody. Something would have to break...what? I'm guessing the space time continuum would collapse into another big bang.

when it was first started it slowly became "sad statistical facts" instead of "fun with numbers" ...

I think it's happening again.

What you're describing is one of the oldest philosophical problems known to man: the Resistible Force versus the Movable Object.

In 2010 on BYTO is was full of sunshine and lollipops. When the team stinks, you get a lot of sad stats.

"Sad statistical facts" can be fun, too. Truly bad is at least as interesting as truly good. Both require the same degree of abnormality.

According to the resident physicist, USAF Chief, I believe he would call this a space time convergence

That which we do not speak of.

I've muted the radio every game, after just a few at bats of listening.....that's a new record for me personally. Usually I go innings or complete games by now. Not sure what the stat is for that exactly.

Every last one of you is getting the ban if this conversation about lollipops continues.

Hm, you might enjoy

from the 50's.

/ ObFunWithNumbers: Twins are on a pace for 4 wins in 2013, if they don't win any more.
