Article: Rotation becomes clear as Minnesota Twins cut two more

Watching Pelfrey yesterday he reminded me of Jon Rauch. Now obviously 1 is a starter and 1 a reliever but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about they're similar in height and the kind of "stuff" they bring to the mound. Maybe Pelfrey is Pavano 2.0 and the Twins can get 1.5 good seasons out of him. Here's hoping!

I believe Pelfry will be fine as a starter 12-15 wins if he has his command back and he is back to throwing 90MPH. I was beginning to think he might need a few weeks more to work on that. Worely too. I wonder who will be the first to loose their rotation spot this season DeVries or Corriea? whats the over under there? I think DeVries has the chance to be serviceable.

Alex Meyer can't get in this rotation soon enough, I mean guys like Diamond, Worley, Pelfrey can be serviceable, but this team desperately needs a front rotation guy. (Hopefully Gibson can become that as well)

The first out will the last in. He'll only get to make at most two starts before Diamond projects to be back. That is probably DeVries.

What happens if DeVries and Hendriks are holding their own while Correia, Pelfrey and Worley struggle mightily? Does this team have the stones to pull the plug on Correia and Pelfrey if Diamond is ready and Gibson and Deduno or even Hernandez are proving themselves at Rochester? I don't think they do, I think Hendriks/DeVries get sent packing regardless of accomplishments.

Pelfrey pitched well yesteday, after having a rough first inning giving up 3 hits and a run. If Morneau's arm was just a tad longer, he'd of been out of the inning. He was throwing consistantly 90 on the gun. His breaking stuff looked good and he used that alot after the first. The lowest I noted was 74mph, and mixing it up had hitters off balance.

If that happens, whoever is struggling developes a blister and is shut down for a couple of weeks.

Don't count on Gibson til fall unless all the wheels fall of in the rotation.

Gibson will probably be shut down by fall. IMHO, he can pitch his way into the rotation no matter how well or poorly everyone else is doing. I expect him in Minnesota by mid May.

I'd think the probability of this is high.

If Hendriks is performing well there is NO WAY they send him to AAA. He has nothing more to prove in the minors. They need him to either step up and become a reliable (hopefully above average) MLB pitcher or show that he can't do it and make plans to move forward without him in future plans.

So many variables. Worley would be allowed to work through difficulties if not injured. Pelfrey it would depend on if the Twins feel if were due to injury rehab taking longer, what the brass thinks of his pitching prior. Correia is anybody's guess. They did say something once about him being flexible (would go to bullpen) so it might be part of the plan. DeVries and Hendricks holder their own would mean they were consistently providing quality starts with the other three not doing so.

In a couple weeks add Deduno and Diamond...and it's not that bad.

Worley

Pelfrey

Diamond

Deduno

Correia

It's only a matter of time before Gibson earns his shot as well.

I think there is a reasonable chance that it could be almost as bad. However, I think such a rotation has a better chance of being at least serviceable than what we'll be starting the season with. Adding Cole DeVries to the mix gives it a bit better chance at being serviceable. While Kyle Gibson will likely make his debut sometime this season, I'm leery of expecting too much from him this season. Next season might be an entirely different story.

The Twins are not going to pay Correia 4.5 million to work as a long man in the bullpen. The decision to get him keeps looking worse and worse.

[Hendriks] has nothing more to prove in the minors.

I don't know why people say this. He could prove he has a third pitch; that might require time in the minors to perfect, for example.

It could happen eventually. They did for Blackburn. But Correia will get plenty of leash.

Aside from the 6 BP appearances Blackburn made in his rookie season, he's only pitched out of the bullpen 2 times.

More likely if Correia sucks as bad as Blackburn did last year, he'll be DFAed after 19 starts. I doubt he'll end up in the bullpen.

The worst case scenario is he pitches just good enough to hold down a rotation spot all year, but not good enough to win more than five games. In that case, he could be a 20-game loser.

I project him better than that, but he sure has not given us much reason for optimism this spring.

The upside of Correia is Nick Blackburn on a shorter but equally ridiculous contract. He won't be on the roster June 1st. I'd be stunned if his ERA is below 7 after 6-8 starts. I haven't seen anything from Worley that suggests he was really anything but a throw in in the Revere trade. I think Pelfrey is fine as a 4-5 guy but since that's all this team has, he's basically replacement level. Until Meyer and Gibson are in this rotation full time its bottom 3 in the league. So while the rotation might be clear, its obvious its not any better than last year.

I highly doubt the Twins are going to sign a FA to a multi year deal, then cut him after 2 months, regardless of how poorly he is pitching.

People mention Blackburn, but he was allowed to struggle for nearly 3 full seasons before they finally cut the cord on him, and even still he'd be in the mix if he wasn't hurt.

This staff is going to be a disaster. They literally have zero chance to even be competitve. 100 losses is a legitimate possibility.

I don't think I'd go that far. Gibson and Meyer could at least provide some talent on the starting staff. The Twins didn't even have that to fall back on last season.
