Your comparison doesn’t work because the pitcher might throw ball 4, and the hitter may ground into an out. Unlike the other sports you mentioned, baseball does not have a determined length. Why should Mercedes wait until a 3-1 or 3-2 count to swing? That could potentially make the game go longer. I do agree that this isn’t ruining baseball, but it makes no sense to me. If you throw a cookie to a hitter at any point in any game, he should be allowed to clobber it.

If that was purposeful, that's an extremely odd decision.  Why wait until the 7th to do that?  Why bring Duffey in to do it?  That had to have been Duffey going rogue, or it was an honest mistake.
