I don't follow the logic.

Cave's not that great. Kirilloff could be better, especially at the plate vs this starter. But he's never played in MLB before so it's hard to know. If you start Kirilloff, you at least have Cave as a safety net if you need him (at worst, he is a likely pinch runner and/or defensive replacement).

 

If you start Cave, then you lose Kirilloff's potential better-ness because he's basically just an emergency option at that point (no safety net if you bring him in late).

There was maybe one call that Jose didn’t get. He’s been wild last two batters
