I see it was for 120M. I assume that's still the presumed 5 years, but maybe it was six, guess that's not out there yet.

Dang it. Time to start looking for trade partners.

So I'm guessing this now sets the market for every pitcher not named Cole/Strasburg. What are we thinking on Bumgarner or Ryu? 3-4 yrs, 95-110mil?

Bumgarner will get more than that, and I figured as much.

I don't know if he will. I personally think he should but I'm not sure he's valued as highly as Wheeler was for whatever reason.

If this sets the market, this is likely another year where we sit out the big game hunting and hope everything comes together again.

We knew that going into the off season. There are methods to improve the rotation but it won't be through significant free agent moves.

He more than likely wanted to stay in the NL.

Now go offer 6/220 to Cole! (this would be the largest contract in MLB history-time to change our history and win some playoff games)

You could be right. Also the years might be off. But I will stand with that prediction (unless MadBum re-ups with Sam Fran for a slight discount)

Fully recognizing we've been sold the "we have been given authorization to spend whatever we feel is necessary" bill of goods before, we've *never* come off a 101 season with this much payroll space, a great FA SP market, and a FO telling us they're going after significant talent.

3rd, 4th tier options are going to result in me turning in to a Nats fan.

Congrats to the Twins for finishing in 3rd place!

The Phillies finish free agent pursuits in 1st all the time, but it has yet to actually make their team better. Now they’re paying a #3 starter $24m a year and an above average OF in Harper about $28M a year.

I agree but we are who we are. I think there's maybe a 33% chance we sign someone on a high AAV of more than 17m this offseason but if we do, I think it would only be for two years.

I've said it multiple times but I think we're going to go the Rays route with a bullpen rotation. We might sign people out of the Ivan Nova bucket and I think we're going to add an impact bat.

I didn't realize it was that bad! I hope Phillies owner John Middleton can afford his kids Christmas presents this year.

I'd take that bet!

You could be right, I just feel Wheeler got paid on the potential that comes with a 97 MPH fastball and wipeout slider. At least as far as percetion goes, Bumgarner reached and passed his potential several years ago.

But anyone hoping for Bumgarner should take note that the Twins have a history of signing MLBTR's #4 ranked starting pitchers, with both Lance Lynn and Ervin Santana hitting that mark.

That'd be depressing. Falvey is on record saying that they're not going to trot out our rookies for 3-5th spots. The draft plan he's described is draft a lot of impact bats and use that to trade for impact pitching. Maybe we'll be surprised, but discussion aplenty about the lack of cost controlled impact pitching that might be available in trade. So if we're not going to sign or trade for impact SPs, I fail to see how we'll improve on our 2019 results.

I like the idea of a Donaldson type signing. Our offense can again be elite. But unless lightning strikes in the postseason we're unlikely to hang even an AL championship banner.

I'd rather them trot out rookies with good stuff than sign dumpster garbage #4-5 guys. That is what will likely happen.

Terry Ryan will be listening with open ears. He may even make a phone call to see if they need any help identifying the next 37 year old starter that throws 88.

It's clear that he took somewhat less money to stay out East. Probably not tens of millions, but some. So, the Twins were probably never a real option.

Let's hope all the other good SPs aren't as picky about location, or they have a relative in MN.....

How is this a problem for the fans, exactly? They increased attendance so much last year, that Harper made them money, btw......

We can bring back Addison Reed on a small contract and hope he's healthy now.
