jimbo92107 Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Because Smeltzer throws the ball a little slower, the plate ump gets a better look at his pitches. I bet he gets more good strike calls because of the decreased velocity.
SwainZag Community Moderator Posted August 4, 2019 Author Posted August 4, 2019 Yup, looks like he did. The Washington Post story didn't talk about that.I posted the video link in the former Twins thread. It's fun.

Mill1634 Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Jason Castro started off the year very well, however, in the past 28 days, he has an OPS of .586.
mrtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 It is okay to sweep the royals, Seen all i need of Cave this year, Thanx Byron !!
TwinsCD Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Jason Castro started off the year very well, however, in the past 28 days, he has an OPS of .586. Lately, it seems he's easily overpowered by anything 92 or higher.
Mill1634 Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 slow breaking ball that is HAMMERED TO LEFT *Rosario takes two steps back*
IndianaTwin Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Also lines things up better up for next week. We go Odorizzi, Berrios, Perz against Atlanta, and Gibson, Smeltzer, Odorizzi, Berrios against Cleveland. One more Odorizzi, one less Perez.Additionally, it gives flexibility down the road. With the off day on the 12th and Pineda able to come off the IL by the 13th, they could do things like give Perez an IL stint that only skips one start or just skip him one time through the rotation, either of which could be beneficial for a pitcher who hasn’t been as effective as earlier in the season.
Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Boy, I'm really liking Smeltzer so far. Compared to Perez, he's doing far better against both the Royals and the Yankees... I'm starting to think I'd like him in the rotation more than Perez - once Pineda gets back, of course.
TwinsCD Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Good pitching out of both of these youngsters thus far.

mrtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Cron-Castro-Cave, c-c-c lets get going
mrtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 We havent swept a series in 11 weeks, lets end that streak today
obtusebanter Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Lately, it seems he's easily overpowered by anything 92 or higher. That's the truth. Keller was feeding Castro FBs high in the zone on both of those strikeouts.
Aggies7 Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Are we buying smeltzer as this good? Or is it a matter of “the book isn’t out yet” on him?
yarnivek1972 Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Wonder what the probability on turning that groundball into an out was. Stat geeks?
notoriousgod71 Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Bringing in a relief pitcher when your starter has < 80 pitches seems like a repeat fatal error if Smeltzer is, indeed, done.
TwinsCD Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Awesome 6 innings out of Smeltzer (LEAVE HIM OUT THERE, ROCCO!!). Now let's get the kid some runs.
TwinsCD Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Wonder what the probability on turning that groundball into an out was. Stat geeks? Slim to none and slim had already called the Uber.

Or is it a matter of “the book isn’t out yet” on him?Let’s temper enthusiasm by remembering these are the Royals. And while it is true he’s pitched better than the other guys against them this weekend, it’s still the Royals. On getaway day.
TFRazor Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Anybody else seeing smeltzer in the rotation next season? Dude has earned it
