twinssouth Provisional Member Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 Anytime our draft picks get promoted, I’m all for it. I too would have liked Gonsalves but saw some interviews Stewart had where last 2 years dealing with injuries (knees, shoulder) and this year, he’s finally healthy. Sounds like he had a Spring meeting with the brass and they convinced him to throw less of the heater, ditch the 2 seamer in favor of 1 seamer to get more sink and focus on the off speed. His last few starts all came together and he now has renewed confidence I hope it all goes well. Then, next up Gonsalves, Romero, Thorpe, Gibby and Berrios. All Twins draftee/intl signees. Finally, the pipeline is working the way it should.
KirbyDome89 Verified Member Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 It's a question of room on the 40-man (for either pickup) versus room all season on the 25-man. To me that's a pretty big gap, especially considering that only one bottom feeder out of all 29 other teams needs to find a way to make room on their 40. Again, if he's taken, it may not be a big loss to us. I was just responding to the notion that since he wasn't drafted last winter, no one would claim him now.The gap was in reference to the odds that he's claimed vs the odds he's selected in the Rule V. I'll be shocked if nobody takes a chance on him if he's left unprotected. IMO they're going to have to add him to the 40 man to keep him. I agree, he might not be a big loss, but at least this way they'll have something to go off of before making that decision.
mngopherguy Provisional Member Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 If we are willing to give Kohl Stewart a start to see what he can do, we owe Gonsalves a chance to prove what he can do. Or else we can send him to Detroit so he can play with Hicks and Goodrum and let Gardy show us how to use the minor leaguers we do not want. Sure they can give him a shot, I just question if he has the stuff. Most of what I've read suggests he doesn't currently. I'd love to be wrong.

I'd love to be wrong. I believe Trevor Hildenberger did not have the right stuff either and numerous pitchers have made great careers without the overpowering stuff. He is succeeding and judgment can only be made when opportunity proves.

Richie the Rally Goat Community Moderator Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 What I don’t understand is the narrative that somehow Kohl Stewart is more “ready” for the MLB than Lewis Thorpe. Look when both were teammates in Chattanooga neither differentiated themselves with each other. And NOW you look at the raw numbers and clearly while in AA Lewis Thorpe is the better pitcher RIGHT NOW. Thorpe has a lower batting average against by 50 points his WHIP is 20 points lower and has a SO/BB split of 131/30. Also Thorpe, not Stewart is averaging 10.9 K/9. I mean I’m sure to a way you could reshuffle the deck if you wanted to bring Thorpe up but they chose not to. But clearly given how Thorpe has throughly been the best starting pitcher in the upper minors from July-now says he should be “tested” before his innings limit shuts him down since he has more than earned it, especially more than Kohl Stewart. Stewart needs to be protected from the Rule 5 draft. Thorpe is a no brainer. He’s getting protected no matter what. Stewart needs some more evaluation.
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 So far, not so good. But, I hope he gets a couple more starts to show some improvement.

I doubt he ever gets to the point of being able to navigate a lineup more than once or twice. Tigers were 2 for 9 first time through. 4 for 8 with HBP second time. 2 for 2 with BB third time. If the Twins waive him, he will just be claimed for someone else's 40-man roster. At the very least, he is an interesting relief conversion project with minor league options.

Riverbrian Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 I just want to say that it was a good start. 1 K 1 Smay... Nothing was hit hard... Nothing. I won't predict his future but it was a good start and we should give him another one. Major League Ready 1
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 Stewart is young. His strike out rate is trending up. His ceiling is unknown to me.Trending up because it was so low to begin with, perhaps. Stewart had a 17.5% K rate at AAA this year, versus a league average of 22.0%. (Admittedly was higher at AA this year but was still only league average, and he was also in his 3rd year there.) You are certainly welcome to express a different opinion, but it's not fair to characterize "I think his future is in the bullpen" as an opinion overly reliant on a single play by Adrianza. In fact, it's probably a statement that could apply to most AAA starters, not necessarily a stretch or a knock to apply it to Stewart too.

At the very least, he is an interesting relief conversion project with minor league options.Agreed, he is interesting as a relief conversion project. I’m not sure I’d risk losing him, but it depends on who else I would need to protect. According to AZ Phil if Stewart were waived unclaimed and outrighted to AAA he would be rule 5 eligible. Whether or not he would be claimed if waived, and/or drafted via rule 5, I’m not sure. I might be tempted to sneak him through waivers when rosters expand in September. https://www.thecubreporter.com/mlb-rule-5-draftQuote:4.
