Take a Flyer on Chris Tillman?

He elects FA after being DFA'd by Baltimore. The stats are brutal this year. But in 2016 he was great.

 

He may be washed up... Is it worth taking a chance on him?

No they have guys deserving a chance in AAA like Gonsalves.

If he sucks, then he was just blocking someone in AAA as mentioned above.

If he is good, then would we really want to compete with others to sign Chris Tillman in the offseason?  The right answer is no and in which case we just paid him to audition for other teams.  :-)

 

With all that said...in a scenario where Lynn, Gibson, Santana are all traded, I can see a veteran flier on someone like Tillman for insurance, so we aren't rushing any AA pitchers to fill some spots.

In theory, I'm all for taking low risk chances, so I don't hate that idea. But if given a choice I think I'd rather see Chris Gimenez back on the mound again.

A winter minor league deal to see if Tillman is healthy would be OK. Maybe a deal where he has a May 1 or June 1 release.

 

There was no reason for the Orioles to keep him. He is going to be a free agent at the end of the season. Even if he gave them a couple of good months to end the season it would only be a showcase for other teams. The Twins don't need to provide that showcase either.

He was last good two years ago and he was never that good in the first place. The dude has more walks than strikeouts!

I don't see any reason to get him unless the front office thinks he can regain his value from two years ago and be moved in August. That seems quite unlikely though and not at all worth blocking Romero, Gonsalves, Mejia, Slegers, Littell or even Thorpe from getting some MLB seasoning this year in preparation for 2019 contributions.

I think they already signed that guy in Pineada. So much depends on Gonsalves, Can he command the strike zone enough to pitch at the MLB level. We will find out after the deadline unless the FO is already sure the answer is not yet.
