Michael Pineda thread

Wow.  Just the kind of forward thinking move, many of us had hoped they'd make.

Mod note: I am moving Pineda posts from other threads into this single thread. That may again change when TD columnists post an official Article shortly, at which point this thread likely will be closed for further posts. - ashburyjohn

MLBTR announces signing of Michael Pineda by Twins.  Roll of the dice, I suppose.  Where do you think he'll fit?  OK signing so long as it doesn't stop us from going after top of rotation and shutdown reliever(s).  Maybe the logjam is beginning to open

I like it a lot. They have open 40 man space and they'll potentially need a replacement for Santana, Gibson and whatever other veteran they sign for one year.

Teh Google said Pineda just had TJS in 2017?

That is correct. Not pitching in 2018, hence the two year deal.

I'll be interested to see what kind of financial terms make sense for a pitcher who can't be ready much before mid-season and maybe not until 2019. A team option for 2020 would be highly desirable.

Different kind of pitcher entirely, but will we suffer through another Mike Pelfrey scenario? Or maybe Pineda achieves his tantalizing youthful performance. I guess we'll find out up close.

Looks like $2 mil this year, $8 mil in 2019, no option. Seems like the going rate (it's what the Cubs did with Smyly).

I was a little bummed when the Cubs did the same thing with Drew Smyly. This works too, I like it a lot.

I'd like to see the Twins to get into that Danny Salazar rumor though as well.

is Smyly also not pitching in 2018?

i guess this is insurance on Santana option not getting picked up and Gibson. i thought we had 6 starters in AAA knocking on door to bigs going into next season. we need someone for next season.

Though it will help for Pineda to pitch away from Yankee stadium.

So we pay $10M for the chance at a front line type of pitcher for 2019. In a vacuum that is a deal worth having. It raises more questions than it answers about the front office's view of the window of contention, though. I'll summarize as:

  1. So... what about 2018?
  2. So... what about 2020 and beyond?

I guess those will be answered in the fullness of time.

Smyly had TJ surgery in June, Pineda in July, so neither club would be smart to consider either contributing this upcoming year.

Only $2M of Pineda's deal is going on 2018's books, the remaining $8M in 2019 looks pretty trivial comparatively as Mauer's deal will be expiring at that point. I'd guess this signing was a fun lotto ticket and likely has few ramification for any overall game plan the organization has.

Of course it would be nice to see some significant moves to validate that yes, there actually is a game plan.
