I believe because the error lets the run score. Batter gets a hit, and the run scores on the error as the runner advances from third.

But the runner at 3rd may not have scored if the ball didn't get past joe

If Joe scoops it the runner doesn't advance, I assume that's where the addition of the error comes into play.
