Listening to Dick talk about the 87 team and how there was trouble with the pitching, yet, he ignores, or forgets, that a big difference maker for 87 Twins pitching was Juan Berenguer.

 

Good call. Reardon and Gladden have always been the first names mentioned when analyzing the upgrades over the '86 squad, but Juany was a huge addition to a bullpen that had often struggled even when it wasn't Ron Davis making a ritual burnt offering of potential wins.

 

112 innings with an ERA+ of 117, with 6 spot starts, 4 saves and an 8-1 record tossed in for good measure. And all accomplished at the svelte weight of just 186 pounds on his lanky 5'-11" frame, according to BRef (Ok, so he broke into the majors at age 23 and if he weighed 186 or less after that season I'll eat an autographed Berenguer jersey, but still, the guy could pitch).

 

And a snappy dresser to boot.

The master Bill James himself analyzed the 87 Twins, who media and fans said had "no pitching" apart from two starters.

 

His analysis was that this is WRONG. The Twins had typical #1, #2, #4, #5 starters. The only piece the 87 Twins lacked was a #3 starter. James discovered that #4/#5 starters on championship teams never have winning records, and in fact tend to be terrible.

 

And down the stretch, Straker stepped up and was the #3 when it counted.

I bet reading such a magnificent game thread intro made many of you eager for your chance. Lucky for you, July has some opportunities still available.

Open dates: July 4, 7, 8, 9, 18, 19, 22, 23, 25 and 26.

I just remember a game where Juan Berenguer made a spot start, because the entire staff was worn down and pitched something like 7 innings. I don't remember which player commented on it after, but I know it was a key game in the improbable season that was the 87 Twins.

I felt bad for Straker when he dropped that ball during the Series and was called for a balk, which it was. If memory serves, Straker was going pretty good at the time and the balk kind of did him in.

 

Anyway, the Diamondbacks, when they won the Series, did it pretty much the same way the 87 Twins did, with two front line starters.

Well, Santana did "shut" them down, but those pesky Twins had to score 1 more run than was predicted by some one................  ;)

The game? Can we say Molitor had a sophomore slump last season? Pitching defense is my favorite kind of winning ball.

 

Oh, and Rosario's leash is just the right length to me.
