Parker Hageman, co-founder of popular fans website Twins Daily, raised the issue with a series of Twitter posts on Saturday evening.

“Whenever he got a new ball from the umpire, he touched the bill of his hat in a weird way,” Hageman wrote as a lead-in to a video clip of Berrios’ mound habits. In succeeding posts, Hageman suggested a dark spot farther back on the pink-billed cap may have contained something unusual and said a Berrios family member tweeted him that the pitcher has “dealt with accusations since childhood.”

Not a good look IMO, Parker. Throwing around accusations of cheating with no real proof? Slippery slope. You could do this about 50% of major league pitchers, why zoom in on berrios? In his first 2017 ML start?

I get it was just Twitter musings, but still, I hate that it takes away from what Berrios did.

Cliff Lee used to do that, drove me nuts. I remember thinking of Lee while watching Berrios so, maybe? Who knows? Doctoring the baseballs is probably a lot more common than fans think - we saw the Cards pitcher load up a ball so much it stuck to the catchers chest pad and no one blinked. It happens. Some snarky former pitcher actually wrote a pretty good article about all the doctoring they do in the bullpen.

I think Kenny Rogers did something like this in a playoff game. I can't remember the details though.

Parker needs to overcome the fact that if Berrios doctored last year, it was wildly ineffective, but this year it's working for him.

What is he doing differently?

That would be an interesting read.

KY has a mint flavor now?

And an article on it ---> http://www.twincities.com/2017/05/14/get-a-grip-twins-pitchers-say-of-online-accusations-about-jose-berrios-and-his-cap/?utm_campaign=Echobox&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#link_time=1494790721

"Two scouts in attendance for Berrios’ career-long 7 2/3-inning start on Saturday said they noticed nothing unusual about the way Berrios rubbed up a new baseball or behaved between pitches. Nor did the Indians ask plate umpire C.B. Bucknor to search the talented 22-year-old right-hander.

Countless modern-day pitchers regularly find ways to improve their grip, which hitters actually appreciate because it keeps them from having to dodge wayward offerings.

“No one blows the whistle because they know everybody’s doing something,” one major-league scout said."

He must be going with a full synthetic oil this year. Maintains viscosity forever, great stuff!

Yeah if the professional hitters who have had thousands of professional at bats against hundreds of pitchers in their professional careers didn't notice anything fishy, I'd say it's probably just much ado about nothing.

A good lesson in twitter and how it works IMO. Can spread like wildfire.

Unfortunately this is the main story being talked about in the papers today in re: Berrios start, rather than talk about how Berrios did fantastic and at least for one day looks like the true front of the rotation guy this team has needed for a long long long time.

Eagerly awaiting what I hope might transpire.

Scuff (on baseballs) Rulez!!!1!!

Maybe these accusations will work in Berrios' favor by worrying opposing hitters and managers and coaches so that they concentrate on something which is not there, instead of concentrating on other things which really matter. As Joe Garagiola wrote "Baseball is a funny game".

Likely everyone will dismiss this as the poor joke that it is.

Welcome to Minnesota, Berrios.

Huh, I thought it was a question, not an accusation.

Do people think Parker, who is a HUGE Twins fan, would do this to "raise his profile"?

As a great WR once said, "come on, man".

Yea it doesn't seem like he's accusing him of anything. More just stating what he saw when Berrios would get a new ball.... seems like trying to make this a bigger issue than it really is.

No clue why a guy who has worked so hard to be a trusted Twins source would do this. And yeah, it's an accusation.

Maybe he was having a bad day. Maybe his blood sugar was low. Maybe he needed more coffee. Maybe he just doesn't like Berrios. Who the hell knows.  Until he speaks up this is just guessing, and he has not spoken up in spite of surely reading this thread.

Whatever the case, without evidence this was the wrong thing to do. We all make mistakes, it's OK to own up to them.

Imagine the comments if Reusse or Souhan had said this. We would be on page 50 by now.

In my mind it was a bit irresponsible. It's clear what he was hinting at. Doesn't look like much of anything to me.

Hasn't changed my thoughts on Parker, I think he's awesome. Just don't think it was a very cool thing to do.

Twitter!  What is it good for?

Nothin'!  Say it again.

Twitter!

Good God, ya'll.

Can't agree enough. It has ruined this country.

That would also be libel.  What Parker did could be construed that way too.  In this age of electronic, instant media, the line between journalist and "internet wannabe" can be blurry.  The difference with Reusse and Souhan of course is that they are employed by huge media conglomerates.  Point being in civil law you go after someone who has deep pockets.

Not to derail this into a Twitter bashing thread.... But I'm very happy to be in a profession where I don't need to build a #Brand on Twitter.

I really like twitter. If you manage it well enough can be a great source of information, with both quick hits and links to longer stories.
