Game Thread: Twins v Tigers, 4/22 @ 1:10pm CT

major league 2 Bob uecker O

Folks, this weekend, I aim to steer our attention away from the tedium of Wins and Losses, WAR, fWAR, bWAR, xWAR, and other such trivialities. Today and tomorrow, we will instead pay our respects and devote our attention to the curators and folklorists of this great pastime: the broadcasters.

You may be aware that I've recently relocated to Los Angeles, California. Around these parts, Vin Scully spent 58 years (and 9 years before that in Brooklyn) etching himself into the edifice of baseball immortality. 67 years of greatness without pause have landed the venerable Scully in every eligible Hall of Fame. He is a lifetime Emmy winner, and most recently, the recipient of a Presidential Medal of Freedom. This is the first season of Dodgers baseball since 1950 without Vin Scully presiding, and his absence is a tender scar on the enthusiasm of a city that loves few things more than their Los Angeles Dodgers.

So, one may wonder, if this guy has won every award imaginable - if near every landmark from Echo Park to Chinatown bears his name - why must we intentionally pause to celebrate this man's ubiquitous contribution to baseball culture?

Ummm...OK, right, so never mind Vin Scully for a sec...

This weekend we celebrate all of our broadcasters, great and small, for leading us through these games that we hold so closely to our hears and collective spirit. Today, we'll keep in mind our favorites (Carneal), our rivals (Hawk), the great historians (Scully, etc), the jesters (Uecker), the drunks (Caray). To one and all, a fond memory, and a tip of the old cap.

With that, let's take a look back at a short reel of...

Great Moments In Sports Broadcasting History!

1. Miracle on Ice

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYscemhnf88

Let's just get this one out of the way, right? Single most iconic call in sports history. I don't think there's much debate in that. A couple fun facts about this call: 1) Americans did not hear this live, but rather the following evening on tape delay, and 2) Not a gold medal game. This was a play-in. The more you know...

2. Shot Heard Round the World

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrI7dVj90zs

You know what? I'll be straight with you. I'm completely ignorant as to the significance of this moment, and in the interest of full disclosure, I didn't have it in me to suffer through the video above. That said, I'm sure it's important and stuff. If you want to know exactly why, how bout you give ol' Ken Burns a call. In the meantime, here's a Shot Heard Round the World video more suitable to my own lackadaisical brand of whimsy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6ikO6LMxF4

3. "This guy is drunk!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glHciBJGIto

Broadcasting protocol obligates directors from capturing interference of this type on video. Well, fans were in luck this night, because Kevin Harlan was on the spot for the call, and he continued to portray the panedmonium with a vividness that the naked eye's account could never rival. This belongs in the Smithsonian.

4. Secretariat Seals the Triple Crown

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfCMtaNiMDM

Although sports in which humans are tertiary components of the competition don't really twirl my beanie, this is undeniable a classic moment in Horserunning!

5. Moonshot

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dmqGg6Ccvw

Joe Buck is disgusted and we're all very happy for him. See No. 6.

6. All the times Joe Buck surreptitiously peed his pants during a broadcast.

<Error404_videogotpeedonandwasdestroyed>

...Talk about disgusting, am i right, you guys?

7. Joe Carter will never hit a more important home run.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBWk4XHaJ_A

...and he never did. God Bless Joe Carter. Love that guy. Tom Cheek on the call.

8. Down Goes Fraziuh!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9q7mvc6bsY

The paradoxically inimitable, yet utterly imitable Howard Cosell with the call.

9. The Sailin' at the 2012 Olympic Games

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bngGgqdtVg

For my money, the funniest video i've seen. Very confusing scenes, there.

10. "See you tomorrow night!"

And now, a Special Announcement!

In this spirit of broadcasting excellence, tomorrow afternoon, I will be calling the game live via Game Thread. It's anybody's guess as to how this is actually going to go, but I'm sure you won't want to miss it. Prior to first pitch, I'll post a link to this thread, which, when clicked will bring you to Twins Daily's first ever Game Thread Live Broadcast!

Just want to add ... MAKE SURE YOU TUNE INTO TOMORROW'S GAME THREAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For all the 'complaints' about Dick n Bert, or Gladden ... here's your chance to hear a new voice ... presenting DINGER!!!!

Mute the sound on your TV and tune in; don't stream the radio broadcast, go with Dinger Live!

Van and I helped Dinger do a test run yesterday and I think it will be a new and interesting twist to the game thread. Play by play with Dinger; and Dinger will be following the thread, so comments and questions from our posts may get put out over the Dinger airways!

So excited!

If one cannot be around for tomorrow's game, will the audio be recorded to be able to listen too at a later time?

Trivia on the Shot Heard 'Round the World. The audio you hear is actually from the radio broadcast by Russ Hodges. Games were not routinely recorded at that the time, but a Dodgers fan had his tape recorder hooked up to the radio.

The game itself was the first ever to be nationally televised. On the TV mic that day was a young broadcaster named Ernie Harwell, who would, of course, go on to fame as the longtime radio voice of the Tigers. Tiger fans here in northern Indiana and nearby Michigan and northwest Ohio love Harwell just as deeply as Dodger fans love Scully.

And deservedly so. Very conversational in nature. One of his regular things was to say, when a foul ball headed to the stands, "That one was caught by a fan visiting from Muskegon" (or Hillsdale, or whatever small Michigan town he thought of that day). He was known to be a wonderful gentleman.

That would be a question for Dinger. I'm assuming not ...? Don't know ...

If you wait 25 years,I am pretty sure you will be able to find it at the Smithsonian right next to some of Roosevelt's fireside chats, a Harry Carey recording, and Orson Wells War of the Worlds.

Call me an oddball I'd you will...and I would probably agree and have been called worse before...over the years I've enjoyed almost all of the Twins announcers. This includes Gordon and Gladden as well, and also the TV crew. Are they perfect? No. But after listening to other broadcast teams from other organizations, and various TV crews, I don't want stale. I enjoy stories and tidbits.

Not great timing with Torii Hunter's broadcasting debut this weekend.

Nice intro. Boyd isn't exactly an ace, I'd like to see us get to him this time. Also like the lineup construction with Sano being bracketed by Polanco and Grossman. I'm optimistic, go Twins.

Pretty hard to complain about this lineup against lefties. Molitor continues to try new approaches to the lineup and I think he's getting closer to a finished product (now that we have some established performance baselines to judge the 2017 roster).

First warm day at Target Field, I think. It'd be nice to see Dozier sky some balls to left field today.

A lead off hr is my prediction.
