Hated the trade at the time, hate it now, will likely hate it 10 years from now.

 

I don't care how badly you need a catcher, and how many outfielder's you have. Trading that kind of talent, with tools oozing out of his ears, for a guy like JR Murphy is ridiculous.

 

Bringing up small sample size does nothing for me. Just watch the two play.

 

Before you cry hindsight, my reactions the day of the trade could easily be found.

Is this about the trade (not good) or a statement on the teams ability to coach the talent they are given? Again the Twins - not good.

The joke was that the Yankees and Red Sox were rained out yesterday!
Thus his OPS, HR's WAR etc stayed the same!
 

The other half of the joke is that Murphy still isn't on the roster!

Hicks has a wRC+ of 222 and it's not inflated due to a unsustainable BABIP either. His BABIP is an extremely low .231.

 

Murphy has started off horribly in AAA. .422 OPS.  Maybe he needs to go back to AA.

This is an overpay for catching. Trading a guy with 20-20 potential for a guy that seems unlikely to reach 10-0.

 

It is also starting to look like the Twins scouting staff may have liked Murphy based on a single good game against us. It's not fair of me to make that assumption so I qualify it with "It is starting to look like". 

 

It doesn't matter to me if Hicks crashes and burns and is out of baseball in a year. I still won't like the trade because of the potential that Hicks possessed. 

 

The Twins played Hicks while he struggled and absorbed all that struggling and then as soon as he started to show something. They moved him. 

 

I didn't like that trade then... I don't like it now and I will never like it unless Murphy shows he can produce better than the average catcher does because there are average catchers all over the place. 

 

In my opinion... The Twins could have kept Hicks and signed Salty or something and been better off. I also think the discussion is still relevant because the staff that meets in the room and advised Terry Ryan is still sitting in the room advising Falvey and Levine.

Centerfield prospect: "He once visited Chattanooga as a child. Call him up and make him the starter."

Not sure I would describe Hicks as "oozing talent." He is 27 years old and is having a little success over 33 at bats. Let's not overreact here. We have seen him get hot before only to come crashing back down to earth.

I don't know how to spell "Oozing" so it might have been someone else using that term. 

 

I believe there is a decent chance that Hicks never makes it as a major league player. 

 

But.. in terms of potential... Hicks had plenty of it. I don't like trading potential for a player with similar talent as those found on waivers.

lol it's even worse with the relief pitchers!

 

Literally the Twins love themselves some crappy veteran presence for ANY spot on the roster other than CF.

 

It's almost like they are like "this guy is the next Kirby Puckett clearly!" Sort of the same reason why they give Blackburn a 4 year contract bc "clearly he is the next Radke!!"

 

Unfortunately it works the other way as well:

 

Park hits 1,000,000 Hr this spring, "uh oh, this guy might be the next David Arias, let's bury him!"

Seriously. When that babip normalizes he'll be rolling with a wRC+ over 300.

He actually has 44 plate appearances which is a little more meaningful since he's been drawing a lot of walks. And only 4 strikeouts, which his impressive. I'm not making any statements on the situation, just didn't want that to fall through the cracks. (slowly backs out of the conversation)
