DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 Grossman could easily be the best DH option anyways. He hit .828 last year with an elite OBP. buoyed by an unsustainably high BABIP I'd be thrilled if he can manage a .770 ops honestly

DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 Keeping Danny Santana is not "preserving depth." Santana will need to be waived later, just as he would today. Keeping Santana is a choice made that he provides the best opportunity to win. 13 pitchers, Park to AAA, Haley kept simply because he's a rule 5 guy, Hughes ...these are not decisions made with an eye toward the future.Yup. As usual Chief nails it, and I agree with him as he truly has seen it all and has been an elite insider baseball mind ever since he won $50 on the 1919 World Series.

Disappointed? Fine.Checked out? Fine. Angry? Please.Yeah I don't think anyone is "angry" over this. As a fan though it's just more of the same and really dampens what should be the best time of the year. It's gonna be hard to watch this team, last year I maybe watched 5 games after May, this year it will be hard to watch 15 all year if this is the kind of roster we will have to stomach!
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 fandom is emotion driven and completely irrational on its face. Expecting people not to be disappointed, after the last few years, with this roster, that seems irrational to me. I don't really care who the GM is, I care if the team is good or not.Yeah at some point it gets really annoying that this team loses every year.
gil4 Verified Member Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 I hope you don't mind if I take a short sabbatical from TD, since my Tar Heels are playing in the Final 4 Saturday and hopefully Monday night. We mind the fact they are playing, but we understand the sabbatical.
gil4 Verified Member Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 I agree with you on Santana. I don't understand why he is on a 3 person bench. I'm sure it's because he can misplay 6 different positions.

In my opinion: Santana: Keeping Santana has nothing to do with preserving depth. Keeping Santana has everything to do with Keeping Santana. Somebody likes him. Whoever it is... he obviously doesn't post on TD but somebody likes him. 13 Pitchers: I got nothing for this... We have off days coming out of our ears in April. It seems to me like two forces tied together and going in opposite directions while attempting to meet in the middle. Park to AAA: We haven't lost him... He is still a phone call away. He is depth preserved and since he doesn't have to be immediately added to the 40 man... he is now more depth preserved since no one has to be removed to add him. Haley: Yeah... He may not be the optimal 25 man roster selection. But... someone likes him (probably Falvey) and that someone thinks that he could be a solution to our future rotation So... the only reason to keep him is with an eye to the future and that doesn't seem to be jiving with Paul wanting to win right now. Hughes: You gotta at least DL him a couple more times before you hit the trap door button and all that money I guess.

I gotta think Duffy starts the season in the Pen to be the assigned second starter to Hughes' 2 inning "starts".

After coming up short in the first 15 world series, he was bound to get one right eventually.

Unscientifically, Park seemed to be having great at bats against the second tier pitching. . I wish you were running the White Sox last spring because one of their starters had an ERA in the spring of a high 6 variety. You might have thought the pitcher was washed up and got rid of him for nothing. Quintana. Samardjiza (sic) has poor spring numbers as do many other starters. Many phenoms have great numbers in spring (Serafini comes to mind) to fade away later. You really do not have much to base your rant on. If Grossman fails, then Park will get his chance. If a AAA outfielder shows some skill with a bat and a glove, Danny will be gone and you can break out the bubbly to celebrate. If Twins starters show the ability to go longer than a few innings consistently there will not be 2 long relievers in the bullpen.. Which future do care about? 2020 or next week? In the end it is unlikely that anyone who would be up in place of the players you dislike is part of the future plan.

Just to be clear, is it Haley or Hughes that you are comparing to Jose Quintana, the pitcher I've seen picked by a few to win AL Cy Young this year.

bird Verified Member Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 Could be a true statement. I wonder if you asked an opposing pitcher who they would rather pitch to, Grossman or Park what they would say? That might depend on if they can crank a fastball up to 94MPH.

Oldgoat_MN Verified Member Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 Of the 299 players who had >=500 AB from 2015 through 2016, Danny Santana ranked 297th. The last two were signed to long term contracts (Sandoval and Ramirez). hereThere is no conceivable scenario other than maybe pinch hitting for a pitcher where Danny Santana can give your team a better chance to win a ballgame.Yet he is on our bench. Where he should stay until they release him.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 I get that rosters need to be built for 30-35 guys, which is why I accept the bullpen decisions. I don't like it but I accept it. But the Park/Vargas thing really grates on me.

I have been trying to figure this out for two days now, and I can't. Hopefully someone smarter than me can explain how having a bullpen full of guys you can't send down is building a team for 30-35 guys. cutting them doesn't help, that still leaves you with less guys...so I'm really trying to figure this out.

I don't really agree with the decision but I can understand why you want that guy pitching regularly in Rochester and ready to come up the moment one of the existing bullpen pieces falters. You don't know which bullpen piece will falter but you're damned near guaranteed at least one of them will stumble badly. What grates me about the Park/Vargas thing is that the Twins removed both viable DH(ish) players from Minnesota at the same time. Park playing the role of insurance policy in Rochester is fine, it protects you if/when Vargas fails... but if both of them are in Rochester, I don't see the friggin' point.

And low salary contracts for one year can be released. Does hamper flexibility though.

They don't have depth they can move around, at least as far as I can tell....That's the price of a weak farm system is decreased flexibility. But I imagine the majority of teams have at least 4-5 relievers locked in due to contract or options. The problem for the Twins is that the 3 guys with options might be the best 3.
Oldgoat_MN Verified Member Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 ...DanSan is out of options, so you can't send him up and down without losing him ...That literally made me laugh out loud.
Loosey Verified Member Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 My thought on what is happening. The reason for the 13 pitchers is because they are going to give Hughes a start. If he gets lit up, he will go to the DL. The team will then promote Park, and move one of the bullpen arms to the rotation, Duffey most likely. They could do similar things with Park on the opening day roster while moving guys up and down between AAA and Minnesota but depending on who the moving pieces are could be out of options and doing it this way preserves that. Just my thought.
