Dozier Trade Discussion Thread

Article is talking about the "17 most intriguing MLB people for 2017"

"7. Andrew Friedman, president of baseball operations, Dodgers

If building one of the game's great farm systems was the goal, mission accomplished. Corey Seager is the reigning Rookie of the Year, Julio Urias is an obvious breakout candidate, and, with Cody Bellinger and others, there's plenty more coming.

But something tells us the more than $1 billion invested in player payroll by the Stan Kasten/Magic Johnson group over the past four seasons was aimed -- and the roughly $250 million payroll for '17 is aimed -- at advancing to and winning on the World Series stage for the first time since 1988. As it stands, the Dodgers have plenty of long-term viability, but do they have enough to go the distance right now? Merely retaining their prominent free agents (Rich Hill, Kenley Jansen and Justin Turner) cost the Dodgers nearly $200 million. Getting this roster over the hump might take a trade that forces Friedman to dip into that precious prospect pool."

If the front office would've subscribed to this line of thinking, Corey Seager would be on the Phillies right now.

Or maybe they are a year or two further into the process, and have MORE prospects now, and the context is totally different than it was 1-3 years ago. Or maybe not, we'll find out soonish, I'd guess.

Or perhaps the Dodgers would have a trophy in their case.

On Wolfson's podcast today he said he had heard that unless something major changes the Twins will keep Dozier. He commented that the Dodgers aren't even close to offering enough for Brian Dozier..

Wouldn't surprise me one iota.  This is taking way way WAY WAY TOO LONG.

Interesting idea, signing a Bautista type of guy.  That said, I think it's probably more bluster trying to get the dodgers to blink.

So much for getting anything of quality for Dozier. Once he starts out hitting at a .210 clip the best the Twins can hope for in return is a C level prospect. Nice to see the "new" FO acting like the "old" FO in holding on too long to tradeable players. Let me guess after the season the Twins sign Kyle Gibson to a 4 yr $44 million contract, even though he is another tradeable piece that needs to be moved. Dozier is expendable, unless they want to trade Dozier's replacement, Polonco instead.

OK, but that phrase is silly. No one ever says, "Its not a car until it's a car" or "It's not a dodecahedron until it's a dodecahedron." (Though for the latter, maybe people SHOULD say that more often.)

I hope not. I just hope the Twins don't try too hard to over sell Dozier as it's not like you could get Urias or Kershaw for Dozier. JDL+Brock Stewart+another prospect is more than fair IMO.

To any Dodger fans in attendance: what is your club's plan at 2B, sans Dozier?  I suppose you would call up Chase Utley, but I was wondering if Austin Barnes has a real shot there.  Could be an interesting way to leverage your backup catcher too, and potentially free up a roster spot for a specialist (i.e. a pinch hitter).  I have no idea how he handles the position, of course, just noticed that he keeps getting a few reps there.

LOL.  Would like to see an update from Dave on this.  Not surprised as long as this has been taking; finally we can lay this thread to rest and continue with our lives ;)

You can do that at anytime, actually ... but it requires willpower to not continue to check in here ... and since I'm replying it means I've checked in here, which is a good indicator of my own willpower to stay away! :)

Barring a trade with someone else, Stephan Drew or Kelly Johnson would be top choices for 1-year stopgap solutions. They could also roll the dice on Munenori Kawasaki or even Daniel Descalso.

And, obviously, they could simply stick with what they already have. Hernandez isn't a complete bust. I don't know what they have ready in the minors, if anything.

Utley's age probably makes him the last choice.

I think we're all in agreement, as our plenty if not all national writers, that De Leon plus nothing else of substance is not paying what the price should be for a player of Dozier's caliber.

I don't like that the Twins might again end up with a good player that they couldn't capitalize on (for a different reason this time, though), but if that's how the Dodgers are gonna play it, I think it is their loss, not the Twins.

Heck, go sign Bautista and light up Minny and Paul with fireworks the whole season. Maybe they can score enough runs to not worry about how many they give up! (haha)

Make no mistake about it, it will only be the Twins who will lose. The Dodgers will be a favorite for the NL pennant with or without Dozier, and the Twins will remain a team with 100 loss potential unless they make a change.

Wolfson and Rosenthal 98% are reporting directly from the Twins brass IMO, classic spin to try to leverage things a bit.

Deal is still likely to happen, Twins are the ones not meeting in middle for third piece according to source.

Fwiw I reported the "impasse" about 10 min before Rosenthal on twitter I believe

If the Twins decide to keep dozier bc they think they contend, they are delusional IMO.

This pitching is terrible, it can't hold up to win 88+ games

That's only because Rosenthal was working on a large impasse in the bathroom.

And what if the Dodgers weren't offering anything that would induce major positive changes for the Twins?

You are still reading the Terry Ryan playbook, I see. :P

then the Twins still lose....not sure why anyone thinks this SP and RP staff will be anything other than one of the five worst in MLB again this year.

Then you keep Dozier. But the Dodgers still walk away in great shape as an organization and the Twins walk away with a stagnant, unbalanced, log-jammed roster with league-worst pitching and little help on the horizon.

No, it's just that we don't know what's being offered. What we do know is there likely is few if no other bidders so really, the Dodgers likely ARE lowballing the Twins. I know how upset Twins fans would be if we overpaid or even offered market value if the roles were reversed.

I don't, I think the Twins are snakebit. They are in possession of and in position to deal a top player about once a decade and keep finding themselves with too few bidders willing to give a fair return. I'm just trying to say if the Dodgers aren't offering reasonable value it's hard to blame the front office.

agreed, can't blame them for not selling at 50 cents on the dollar.....if that's the offer.

but, in the end, if they can't deal Dozier for pitching, it's going to be a longer rebuild. Frankly, nothing has gone REALLY right this whole rebuild so far. Berrios? Buxton? even Sano? ugh, not what they need so far

Or maybe there's something going on with how the front office has operated that resulted in them not finding and getting great value in trades. Lack of creativity, poor negotiation, or insufficient scouting of other systems, perhaps.

Yep.  I remain convinced that the new FO believes the rotation will see dramatic rebounds this season from Hughes, Gibson and Duffey.  If Santana pitches like last season and they get some production from either Berrios or May with Meija as insurance, team should be able to win 95 to 100 games right? last to first all over again and then world series. Who needs JDL or Alvarez?
