Article: Game Thread: Twins v White Sox, 9/1 @ 7:10pm CT

The Twins return home for a 4-game series against the White Sox which gets underway tonight.

The Twins now have lost 13 games in a row, and the White Sox have not lost 13 games in a row. That’s the backdrop that sets the scene for the beginning of our September. The Twins have lost 13 in a row… Teddy Bridgewater lost a knee cap.

Thirteen just doesn’t feel that lucky right now.

Here are some things to think about:

 

1. Baker’s Dozen – Baking a 13th item was a form of insurance in case something went wrong with one of the other 12. This is important because you can’t show up at the office with 11 donuts… someone will get hurt. That last donut can turn the office into a real life Hunger Games.

2. Lucky 13 – The number 13 is the number between John Ryan Murphy and Kent Hrbek. The Number has long been considered to be unlucky. It even has its own phobia called triskaidekaphobia. Hotels avoid having a 13th floor but I know that it’s impossible to not have a 13th floor if you keep going after 12. Simply putting a big '14' on the floor doesn’t change anything because we all know that 13 follows 12. The so-called 14th floor is still cursed. I know this is true because I stayed on the 14th floor once and the air conditioner didn’t work.

3. Jason Voorhees – As the protagonist of the Friday the 13th series, Jason has become a well-known figure in our popular culture. Jason is easy to recognize as a Canadian because of his Hockey Mask. Most fear Jason but that’s just a matter of perspective. For example… if you watch the movies backwards… Jason instantly becomes a hero as you watch him revive dead people with his magic machete.

4. 13 Colonies – It was the original 13 colonies that banded together to declare and fight for our independence. I remember the teaching of our humble beginnings back in elementary school. I remember the teacher saying that the Declaration of Independence was written in Philadelphia and I remember correcting her by saying that it was written in ink. She replied by saying… no, Philadelphia was where it was signed and I corrected her again by letting her know that it was signed on the bottom.

5. Prime Numbers – Prime rib is delicious but it should be called 'composite rib' because it typically comes in 12 or 16-ounce portions. If you really want it to be prime rib… use prime numbers like 13 or 17. I thought this was a brilliant idea but it would render it impossible to cut into bite size pieces… now being indivisible and everything.

And it's kind of funny because tonight, before attending the Salt Lake Bees game, I'll be eating at a place called Lucky 13, where one survey said they had the best burgers in the state. Planned this weeks ago.

Calgary, 2009, 97th Grey Cup game, Saskatchewan Roughriders lead the Montreal Alouettes, 27-25. On the games last possession, Montreal drives the ball to the Riders 36 yard line and with .05 seconds left on the clock, Alouette kicker Damon Duval lines up for a 43 yard field goal to win the game, he pushes the ball wide right and seemingly Saskatchewan has won................except wait, there is a flag down on the field, the Riders are penalized for too many men. Duval tries again, this time from 33 yards out and Montreal wins the Grey Cup.

 

And with that, the term "A Rider Dozen" is born........................................except in Saskatchewan.

It's offensive to refer to anyone in Canada as a "Canadien", unless they are fans of a particular hockey team, which I can't stand.

Exactly.  That's why I  stick to calling people from Canada, 'Mounties'.  Although, that might just be women from Canada that I call that :-)

There is a 13th floor in my building, and it goes by 13. They didn't skip the number and label it 14, they call it what it is. I remember when I bought my place, on the 11th floor, I wondered aloud to my realtor who would want to live on the 13th floor. She said that there are people who actually want to live on the 13th floor. They either are superstitious in a different way, or they snub superstitions.

 

Jason's mask ... I thought that was the Captain Kirk mask, but that was the mask worn by Mike Myers in Halloween. Either way ... hockey mask, Captain Kirk (William Shatner) mask ... it's all Canadian to me.

 

Prime rib ... Brian ... the next time you are in town, we'll head to the burger bar. They make a burger out of ground prime rib that is so tasty and juicy. I'm not a big meat-eater, but I could eat one of those a few times a week.

I spent a couple days in Regina on a football weekend, the town was packed. A very festive bunch I might add!

I've had a lot of fun in Regina.  Used to go there when I was in North Dakota.  First time I went was with one of my favorite girlfriends ever.  She actually became my girlfriend on that trip.

Really? wow.

I avoid walking under ladders, too ... but that's more because I don't want paint or window washing water to drip on me. Or a workman to drop a hammer on my head.

 

Yeah ... 13th floor ... I don't think I'd ask for a different room in a hotel or anything ... but I wouldn't choose to buy a condo on the 13th floor. Eleven was high enough.

Broken mirrors ... not sure, but I avoid breaking them. Black cats? No problem there at all! If one crossed my path, I'd call out to it and try to pet it. And if I were in the market for a cat, I'd look to adopt a black cat since they are the most difficult to place.
