And Logan Schafer is starting in CF again.

At least he'll already be close to the 7 or 8 AB's that Seth predicted he'd get over the next week or so...

I can only take so much bad news in a day... Teddy is hurt for the Vikes, now this.

Sad day for Minnesota sports fans. The Teddy news just makes me sick.

About Schafer:   if Buxton only ____had ballet dancers for parents_____________________

Fill in the blank, again.

I love Mad Libs!

Another day, another game of Shafer in the lineup.

The only way to justify this, imo, is to keep Rosario in LF and Kepler in RF, their long term positions. I actually think that is defensible.

I'm so glad they didn't call up Palka/Walker and have them waste away on the bench. /s

That one hurts so good...

Has anyone's opinion changed now that we know Schaefer is here to play, and not to rot on the bench?

The folks who said "Don't worry about Schafer, he'll be riding the pine" are in hiding. The Twins can make it all better, and bring those folks back to the board by actually calling up a legitimate OF prospect tomorrow.

I didn't know anything about Schafer before his promotion (thought he was the 1st Shafer!)--but I will say this for him--he made a first class play on that hit off the LF wall where Kipnis was thrown out at the plate! The others would have found a way to get that other than perfect. I guess that was "Logan's Run" that didn't score.

10 and Buxton coming up. Perhaps pages of angst for nothing.

Not sure if you read the thread before mocking it? People weren't advocating for Buxton...

Also, the MLB.com story on this move says Schafer and Buxton will split time in CF. If they really want Buxton out there so soon in a part time role, and Grossman is hobbled, why not split time with Rosario and open up a corner spot?

Schafer in any kind of starting role makes zero sense for this team right now.

Maybe this is all part of the plan to play Buxton only in favorable matchups and if this does not work ticket him for AAA for a part of next year unless he destroys the league.  People develop at different paces, do not hopefully give up on him yet.

The 1st day Buxton sits on the bench in favor of Schafer, Pohlad should march down and give Molitor his walking papers.  Ready or not, he should be in the starting lineup the next 29 games.

So, last week we send Berrios and Duffey to Rochester, replacing them in the MLB rotation with Dean and Albers, and earlier this week we decline to call up Walker or Palka despite OF playing time being available, and all of this was justified in part because Rochester was still in playoff contention, and it was important for these young players to play in some kind of pennant race.

Yet just a few days later, with 5 games left in their season, needing to go 4-1 to keep their season alive (difficult but not impossible), we call up Rochester's leadoff hitter and team OPS leader Buxton?  Apparently because Grossman has a sore oblique and we don't want to over-use Logan Schafer?

Sorry, the "help the affiliates" excuse needs to be retired permanently, along with "minor league pennant races provide extra development value", if both are apparently lower priority than resting Logan Schafer on the worst team in MLB.

Molitor says otherwise   The problem with the corner outfielders are 2 fold   They strike out a horrific rate  They also do not appear to be great fielders.  Logan at least provides fielding.  Defense does not matter?

Honestly, how does that even begin to justify calling up Logan Schafer?

Defense of the other options? Massive strikeouts of the others going to bet better at the major league level?  Honestly, how can you say there were other definitive options?

Okay, now you are knocking Kepler and Rosario. Maybe time to move Kepler to first base and Rosario to his old position of second base. Jeez. Yes, defense is killing this team. If nothing else is a big adjustment in major league baseball, it is playing in a big stadium full of more screaming fans than you have every played in front of consistently with lights and outcrops and different turfs and people who do hit the ball hard consistently.

And, again, that is what you have coaches working with infielders and coaches working with outfielders, going over plots, doing rills and the like.

It is a full 8-hour day with 3-4 hours of work getting ready for each and every game.

And Schafer is the answer because he knows how to catch the ball a couple more times than.....

huh? Rosario and Kepler are on the big league club, they were arguing a minor league corner outfielder should have been brought up. Sorry for the unnecessary ambiguity. .   Although Rosario at second base would fit in the Maddon scheme of things, that is another thread and a subject wisely avoided discussing further here.

Shaffer in a MLB career a little longer than a season has a DRS greater than all but a few outfielders. His impact could be a little bit better than catching the ball a couple times more. Defense really doesn't matter?

Absolutely it does.  This team hasn't believed that all year though, so why are they starting to all of a sudden now?  A bit late to that part I'd say.

Secondly, it's one player.  It's not as though both corners would be occupied by guys striking out at a horrific rate.  Rosario plays CF, Kepler in RF, ABW or Palka in LF.

Supposedly Molitor said they need to see what they have in Schafer. Is that a real quote, about a nearly 30 year old with a career BA of around .210?

Here's the link.

“We’re just letting him play,” Gardenhire said. “I think he’s comfortable here. We’re giving him a great opportunity, and he’s responded very nicely here. Our goal when we got him over here was to let him play and see what we have with this guy.”

Oops. Wrong manager. Wrong Schafer. :)

Regardless of how many AB's Schafer ended up getting before recalling Buxton again, doesn't justify a team with 50 wins bringing in a player with zero future with the club to play in front of someone who they still desperately need to be a part of the future.

This, 1,000x this. The Twins are the only org in sports who would continue to make these stupid mistakes.

It's not just coincidence that the Twins have been one of the most pathetic orgs in sports the last 25 years as well. They get GIFTED guys like Liriano, Santana, Morneau, Nathan and Mauer and still can't even win a playoff game because they refused to open old man pohlad's coin purse to actually fill in a few missing pieces.
