Sano will commit his share of errors, but I think he's going to be better than merely acceptable at 3rd.

Boy I hope you're right. He has been a butcher the last week though. Go back and watch that rain delayed Jul 5 condensed game on mlb.com. Its full of Sano gaffes. Lucky for him I don't think more a few dozen people saw them at the time.

The sour grapes from Dick and Roy are not right. Rosario's foot came off the bag by an inch on the second step. Same rules for both sides, boys. Great play by them, hold that tag until they stop moving!

Hate to say it, but Rosario's out.

Tuned in just in time to see the replay. I think the overturn is the correct call. There is no benefit to the runner to pop up standing, unless he believes the ball is getting away from the fielder.

"The #1 responsibility of the base runner is to demonstrate he's got physical control of his situation." -- Ron Gant

I have no problem with that call.  Rosario came of the base, and was tagged.  It's no different than being out at first by a whisker, or beating the tag/not beating the tag by an eyelash.  Baseball is pretty easy to understand..if you're off the bag and tagged, you're out.

What I have a problem with is players STILL using a popup slide that puts them at risk of coming off the bag in a tag situation.

And coaches who haven't made that a priority.

Dozier misses outs on plays like this all the time as he never holds his glove on the runner. Many many times he sweep tags and then holds his glove up instead of holding his glove on the runner just incase they come off the bag as they so often do.

Timing of Manager Challenges and Crew Chief Reviews.

Except as otherwise set forth in Sections II.D.2, 3 and 5 below, to be timely, a Manager must exercise his challenge (by verbal communication and/or hand signal to an Umpire), or the Crew Chief must initiate Replay Review (if applicable pursuant to Section II.C above) before the commencement of the next play or pitch. Such challenge or request will be considered timely only if the Umpire acknowledges that communication within the time period specified above. For purposes of these Regulations, the next "play" shall commence when the pitcher is on the rubber preparing to start his delivery and the batter has entered the batter's box

I believe the next play criteria had been met, no?

Correct call on the review, unfortunately. Coaches need to work with their players on pop-up slides.

And this is exactly why Ron Gant would have been confirmed as being out if there had been replay in Game 2 of the 1991 WS.

Agreed Rosario needs to stay on the base there. It's happened plenty of times now, where the baserunners pops up an inch and gets called out. Have to be aware of that.

The best comparison isn't some slick semi-all star glove at third, it's young 3B's like Plouffe in his first year at 3rd. Sano as a fielder has plenty of talent to play the hot corner, and he'll get better as he accumulates thousands more reps, just like Plouffe has improved. Sano has a great arm, soft hands, and mentally he's got a good model of the game in his head. The hesitation mistake he made today will disappear after another couple thousand two hoppers. The coaches will keep telling him to attack the ball, and eventually he won't hang back anymore.

Can't one be on the rubber but not preparing to start his delivery? And would mean both actions have to have happened.

They need to change the rule. If you beat the throw to the base and don't over slide it, you should be safe. For 100 years the umpires would have laughed in the face of anyone claiming Rosario should be out on that.

Slight difference there. Hrbek actually did put an All-Star wrestling move on Gant, knocking him off balance. Now, Herbie did make it look like an accident, which makes him even more beautiful in my eyes. Proof is in this observation: What other time do you remember Kent Hrbek accidentally falling over? Pretty much never.

The guy that got Rosario did it right - he held completely still where he made the tag, no leaning into Rosie. Clean play, smart play.

Agreed. Hi def slo-mo replay + new rules protecting fielders from contact = asking a hell of a lot from baserunners.

Not that it should have mattered in this case.

I mostly agree.  IMHO, the way baseball is going, is the way of the video game.

Disagree about Gant.

Look at 0:44 to 0:45. Hrbek applies the tag and maintains contact. Hrbek is not lifting Gant when Gant loses his balance and loses contact with the base. After that happens Hrbek lifts Gant, but Gant was already out before that happened. And Hrbek never falls over.

I could not disagree more.

Do not change the rule.  For 100 years, if you're off the base and get tagged, you're out.

The only thing that's changed is how far off the bag you have to be, and whether the umpire has to see it in real time.

They got the call right.  He was out.  Replay worked EXACTLY like it should.

Milone's pickoff was beautiful. Did you see how he set it up with a head-turn, pitch on the previous pitch? He baited Choo into watching his head turn, then did a slightly smaller head turn (less than 45 degrees), then threw to first. Clever as hell.

Agree. And that's how it should be. If the fielder has a tag on you and you are not on the base you are out.

My only contention is examining certain plays to the millimeter but ball and strike calls are all over the place.   I guess not too dissimilar from football where a catch is dissected but holding calls and pass interference are judgement calls.

I interrupt this post for a Home Run - way to go Vargas!
