No, that part of the plan went off the rails. Law of unintended consequences:

This was the natural outcome.....they didn't do this last part right. 

 

Obama looks like an aberration. This nation is swinging further and further right. Our Democratic "leaders" are right of the right wing candidates in some parts of Europe. I had hoped, like Nick, that demographics were in our favor. I admit, I have other stuff going on in my life right now that is clouding my outlook....so my lens is a bit off right now....but I have been telling my father and others this was coming for several years now. 

 

If Trump even attempts his wall/deportation policies the Dems will have to be absurdly incompetent in 2020 (wholly possible) not to be able to mobilize the Hispanic vote next time out; it should have been much, much higher and it's a clear path to winning. They absolutely HAVE to have someone who appeals to them while Trump is still running. The party leaders can't risk alienating that demographic any further and letting Rubio or whomever the GOP has after 2020 denouncing Trump's policies and getting those folks on his side. 

 

I'm wondering which party splits though. I still think it could go either way. Perhaps both. It's looking more and more like the Clinton Democrats and the Graham Republicans have more in common than the other side of each party. Social issues are almost all that separate them.

The best case scenario is that we see Graham, Rubio, Ryan, et al try to take back their party. I don't agree with their policies but they're decent people.

 

I cannot say the same for Trump.

 

If we're lucky, we see them form a coalition with moderate Democrats to block Trump's most outrageous ideas.

 

But we're pretty much ****ed on the deficit and taxes. There's no way I see the GOP backing down from the opportunity to lower taxes on their bread and butter.

I couldn't listen to it, but I finally got under control enough to read Trump's acceptance speech. It wasn't bad, I thought it would be full of "I told you so's". It wasn't and he didn't threaten to imprison his political rival this time so that's a plus.

 

--"We are going to fix our inner cities and rebuild our highways, bridges, tunnels, airports, schools, hospitals. We're going to rebuild our infrastructure, which will become, by the way, second to none. And we will put millions of our people to work as we rebuild it."--

 

This is literally the first policy he mentions in his speech, if he's serious about this, I'll at least listen. This kind of overhaul sounds like it can only be accomplished with Public Works kind of stuff though which obviously is a liberal/socialist idea and goes against most of his party's strict capitalistic principles.

 

Also, he may find that he needs many of the Mexican laborers he wants to get rid of to accomplish these projects. Trump is stubborn, I'm fine if he's stubborn about investing in our infrastructure.

I agree and that was my point. His campaign platforms seem to undermine this effort. If he truly wants to get these projects done, he'll likely have to abandon some of the garbage he claimed during his campaigns.

Well, the sun rose this morning. I'm at my job... Hopefully you are too! And zero intention of moving out of this country. It's time to accept, move on, and try to unite the gap between all of us.

I'm 35,000 feet in the air and I can confirm the sun is up and I haven't seen any large fires/meteors or other signs of the apocalypse.

 

Oh and the stock market is UP as well.

I think it always would have. At best it would have been re-routed and that was a longshot.

 

ND's new governor got elected with the same anti-establishment hysteria based mostly on the previous "old boys club" Republicans kowtowing to the oil companies and the ensuing dropping oil prices. He's a fiscally conservative business man running on economic diversity but is generally socially liberal.

 

People around here want the oil money and don't want to be told what to do by "liberals" and the EPA, but they also are fed up with the oil companies and the ghost towns they are leaving behind. I wouldn't be surprised if the new governor starts initiatives that make ND the leading supplier of wind energy in the next decade. He's a Republican who got no donations from big oil (but tons from Bill Gates); wind power is going to be an easy path to show a "diverse economy" and it would still help the state stay as a leader in energy production.

To be clear.....message sent does not usually equal message received....

 

I am pretty sure NC and other states just got the message that anti freedom laws are totally fair game again. I am pretty sure that our "leaders" now believe the EPA should be dead, and we should just let companies do what they want. I am sure that the haters and racists feel vindicated today.

 

Maybe that's not the message sent, but it is certainty the message they and others received, because that's the message they WANT to receive. That's how communications actually works, having studied it and done it professionally for years.

Personally I'm in wait and see mode. I could see a republican controlled Congress and President passing tax cuts and smart public spending bills. I could also see them starting another dumb war abroad that pays zero percent return on the investment. That is sort of the problem with the party today.

The media created Trump and turned him into Mr. sexist, mysgonist, racist, molester, rapist, user of nuclear weapons, and all around deplorable. if you want to be angry with Trump or the people that voted for him, cool, but you should be most furious with the media.

 

The same media told you he was a joke, was never going to win the GOP nomination, was going to lose every single state and general election poll, was hated by most of America, and had far too many things going against him for any sane person to ever take him seriously. Please remember what the media did, not just in regards to Trump, but what they did to your expectations and how they toyed with your emotions and tricked most of the nation using propaganda, into thinking Trump could never possibly be a threat.
