twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2016 Posted November 10, 2016 There had to be plenty of other demographics who also voted for Trump.Stupid IgnorantIdioticVapid Are those demographics? I'd say they were all involved. And none of those imply uneducated.

In any event, those descriptions aren't exclusive to uneducated white males that are racist and sexist.

Just like most middle class white folks, it's really not my hide that's on the line. I can agree on the idea that they have reason to be more fearful and upset. What I would caution is to read into Trump's election as a statement against minorities. Exit polling showed 30-45% of his own voters found him unfavorable. It shows that it wasn't about Trump or what he believed in, it was more about that middle finger message to a system that has failed so many. So I won't begrudge anyone feeling fear or attacked right now, but I would try to help show them it may not be as bad as it appears. This was less an indictment of the minority population and more of an indictment of the political process.
jimmer Verified Member Posted November 10, 2016 Posted November 10, 2016 I remember reading a lot of Clinton supporters having a good laugh at the idea that if Trump lost the Trump supporters would be protesting in the streets. They were saying something about being sore losers and other unsavory adjectives. Now look what's happening.

twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2016 Posted November 10, 2016 Blue collar America is going to be in for a rude awakeing when the dream Trump sold them ends up being just that, a dream. The past isn't coming back, and Trump is not going to be the one to lead anyone into a new future.

While pumping gas, I had a vehicle pull up beside me...out jumps 4 males...all of whom are Caucasian...they then proceed to talk about the election and how they're glad they won't have to deal with niggers much longer...now me being by myself, I just kept quiet...until one walked over to me...and said, "how scared are u, u black bitch??? I should just kill u right now...you're a waste of air!" Still, I said nun...I kept my head down...he then proceeds to say, "what, are u deaf or something u nigger??" Then another guy steps out and shows me his firearm...he says, "you're lucky there's witnesses or else I'd shoot u right here"...by now there's tears...full blown tears...they leave...I have called the police, but I am shaken...upset...and confused...is this what America is going to be like from here on out??!!
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2016 Author Posted November 10, 2016 So, 30-45% of those who voted for Trump was about giving the middle finger message. What about the other 55-70%? Could those be the ones giving an indictment about the minority population then? Well, I'd suggest the reasons those people have are probably a combination of many things. I'd guess at least another 40% voted simply out of hate for Hillary/Dems. But yes, some of that is racism. Some of it is misogyny. Just not as much as people seem to think it is.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2016 Posted November 10, 2016 Most pointless protests ever IMHO. This isn't protesting against a war, this isn't protesting human rights, or against police brutality. This is a protest literally against the rest of the countries citizens that voted to elect Trump??? I don't like the result either, but these protestors should be trying to bridge the gap between them and Trump voters (if the ever want them to maybe change their thinking) instead these protests make them dig their heels in further and validate their choices. As our next POtUs would say: SAD!
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2016 Posted November 10, 2016 Good point. Sitting around doing nothing works so well. These people are scared and angry....maybe seeing their emotions and being empathetic is a good idea. Or, judge them...

While perhaps 'inconvenient' for some, I don't think peaceful protests are pointless. They are an expression. I've marched s few times in protest of various things.

Problem is, I doubt that statement would be said about Trump protesters if they were doing the protesting had Clinton won. They would have all just been labeled uneducated white males who were racist and sexist.

Problem is, I doubt that statement would be said about Trump protesters if they were doing the protesting had Clinton won. They would have all just been labeled uneducated white males who were racist and sexists.Well, we'll never know for sure since that's not what happened, so I don't think it's a valid argument. But agree with it or not, it is a fact that Trump led a very racist-filled rhetoric campaign and people are scared. Most of the protests, from what I've read are anti-racism protests, and also protesting the election results where the majority vote-getter didn't win. (Yeah, I know, that's a separate discussion and our system is what it is unless/until it's changed, but change sometimes begins with protest.) But as to the racism, it has amped up. I was talking to the building engineer of my building this morning. He's American, born in this country, a citizen of this country, with Puerto Rican ancestry. He said that he's experienced racism throughout his life, and that it has amped up quite a bit in recent months. A friend of his just this morning was told, 'Go home, spic!' I know that not everyone who voted for Trump is racist, and I know that many had other reasons for doing so, but nonetheless, they did vote for someone who has emboldened a segment of the population to do hateful things.

It's a good thing it happened at a gas station, so that in addition to the witnesses there are security camera videos on which the criminals' license plate and faces are almost certainly visible during the commission of multiple felonies. Looking forward to the news story about the apprehension of the perpetrators.

It linked when reposting on Facebook, but not here. It's a Facebook post from a gal in Delaware that I caught from Shaun King's time line. The thread stated that security cameras were being used to find information on these perpetrators, so it's an issue being looked into by police. I don't honestly have a link beyond that.

No one said everyone. And assuming how we would feel about peaceful protests? Priceless.I think these protests are perfectly fine. People need to express their emotions and work through this. The results are jarring and I understand their fear. All that said, can you honestly say that assumption is false? Not that it would've happened, right wingers aren't the protest types in general, but I don't think jimmers assumption is off base at all. Maybe not for you personally, but I doubt he meant that.

From her beacon-handGlows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes commandThe air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame."Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries sheWith silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Yeah we should probably knock that old eye-sore statue down; our new president could turn that real estate into some real swanky high rises.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2016 Posted November 10, 2016 Probably need to re-write that whole thing, maybe now she is guarding our shores from those evil lazy people coming to steal our jobs (lazy people coming here to work......hmmmm.....).
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2016 Posted November 10, 2016 For those of you who are a bit concerned, one thing you can do is become a member of the ACLU. The ACLU is the largest civil rights non-profit in the world and argues more cases at the US Supreme Court than anyone other than the DOJ. I know several of the people that work at the ACLU-MN and they are all pretty good people who care deeply about our Constitution and its protections. You can join here ---> https://www.aclu-mn.org/get-involved/supportus/becomeamember/ And you can read more about the ACLU and its efforts to protect our Constitution from several Trump proposals here ---> https://www.aclu.org/ I'd also point out that the ACLU is non-partisan and has sued the Obama administration on everything from national surveillance, privacy, immigrant rights, police abuse cases and racial profiling.
