The Twins announced this morning that OF Shane Robinson has been placed on the Family Emergency List. That makes room for Aaron Hicks to be promoted.

Obviously we want to wish the best for Robinson and his family.

All the best to Shane and his family.

Just as a matter of curiosity, I take it that the "Family Emergency List" and the "Paternity List" are 2 separate lists?

Last weekend, I thought maybe Trevor Plouffe was gone because his wife Olivia was having their baby.  I'd forgotten about his Grandpa's death.  Plus I looked back and Theodore Winston James Plouffe isn't due until July 25.

So... does this lighten the ballyhoo around the Hicks promotion just a bit?

No.  They wouldn't be pulling Hicks up for a short stint.  They know they can't mess around like that with him...  Right?

I'm assuming the two moves are unrelated.  As in, the Robinson thing happened after the decision to call Hicks up.

IMHO, the Robinson thing buys the Twins this week to decide on what to do. Schafer has to be the favorite to be taken off the 25-man either by DFA or disabled list.

Regarding Plouffe's baby, "Winston James" for middle names? We have a couple regulars, one posting as Winston Smith (IIRC) and another that posts as "James". Coincidence? I think not.

The timing of the Hicks call up sure seems like it was in response to the Robinson emergency. It's a stretch of the imagination that the Twins originally intended to bump someone else from the roster only to learn about Robinson's situation. After three days or so, is it back to Rochester for Hicks?

Yeah, this looks a lot more like they got to the end of the list of available OFers on the 40 man.... looks like Hicks and Kepler were all that was left to choose from in a pinch.

Berardino actually had a post on this.  Trevor is a bit of a history fan, I guess.  Theodore is Teddy Roosevelt.  Winston is for one of Trevors best friends and for Winston Churchill.  James is for Olivia Plouffe's dad's middle name.  Read all about it :

Back to Shane Robinson, hope its a short absence and that all turns out well.

I don't think they would jerk Hicks around like that given what Terry Ryan said last week.

Robinson's emergency may have necessitated Hicks' call-up a little earlier than planned but I don't think they'll be sending Hicks down that quickly.

They've shown no aversion to using non-outfielders in the outfield, however.

This is Hick's last option left, correct?

Last option YEAR.  They can send him up and down as much as they want to this season.

Next spring, he will have to be on the 25-man roster or else clear waivers to be sent down.

YEP.  The key is year.

How is it a stretch of the imagination?  Teams wait to announce the corresponding roster move all the time, exactly for this reason -- no sense making that move Monday in case something like this happens Tuesday.

Most likely, they were aware of the potential Robinson situation and either delayed a Schafer decision or bumped up the Hicks promotion a few days.  But as others have speculated, it seems highly unlikely that Hicks would be a temporary call-up.

But the fact remains, the current situation has forced the Twins hand on their original timeline on Hicks, and he can easily be sent back down to Rochester if either-

-he's not performing, or
-he's squeezed in the numbers game by the 2 CF veteran guys without options- assuming the FO retains their perception that those two represent more value to the major league club in 2015

I hope Robinson's job is secure when he returns.  He was having a nice season here before this happened.  I'd hate to seem him punished for having a family emergency.  Of course, the skeptic in me wonders whether there is an emergency and whether this is just a way to get him an extra week of severance pay before waiving or assigning.

They can option him as many times as they want THIS SEASON.

Options are measured in years, not #times sent down.

I don't think you can really abuse this emergency list, like you can the disabled list.  It's legit.  And there's no way they are cutting Robinson at this point.

Maybe someone can answer this , once the season starts , if the player is cut, isnt he still guaranteed his salary(or a percentage) for the yr, or is that only for those with a certain amount of service time???? And or multi-yr contracts? I believe if tendered a arb contract in spring, and cut during spring training they get like 45 days, but i dont know what Robinson situation would be.........With that said , he isnt be cut, just wonding about people in his situation that are. Thanks :)

Yes, once the season starts all contracts become guaranteed.  Most are guaranteed to begin with, but those that aren't become so once the season starts.

Is that true even if they are signed to a minor league deal, like Robinson was?  I guess I always wondered how that worked.

No, his first AB today sufficed to do that. :)

/ still hoping for better from him, later in the game

I think a week would be a good time to send Rosario back to the minors too as he may be close to being ready for the show but I think continued success at AAA for a while for him is a good idea.

contracts are guaranteed as major leaguers, in other words, if he gets cut as a major leaguer he still gets the rest of his major league minimum contract. If he accepts a minor league assignment, then he's no longer a major leaguer and would receive minor league pay, which I believe is per diem and a firm hand shake.
