Twins Acquire players from Mariners and Angels for International money

The Twins announced that they have acquired Catcher David Banuelos from the Mariners in exchange for $1 million in international money. I wonder who they might want to sign with that money?

Banuelos was the Mariners 5th round pick in 2017 out of Long Beach State.  The Twins need catching depth.

In a second move, Ken Rosenthal writes that the Twins have also acquired OF Jacob Pearson, a 19-year-old outfielder from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for $1 million in international money. I wonder who they might want to acquire with those funds? Pearson was the Angels 3rd round pick in 2017 out of high school in Louisiana.

Rosenthal's Tweet: Source: #Angels acquire international slot money from #Twins for OF Jacob Pearson, who received a $1M signing bonus as a third-round pick in 2017. Clearly adding money for Ohtani, just as #Mariners also did tonight.

Seth, do you think there could be another deal coming? I sort of feel like we’re paying for a player to go elsewhere. How highly regarded are thes acquired players? Where do they slot in our system?

About time they do something with the money. When I saw the top couple of ex-Atlanta prospects already signed I was enraged that the Twins were just not doing anything with the money. Now if these couple of prospects turn out to be decent we will all feel a little better about the international money the Twins were holding.

This is the ultimate in Monopoly Money wheeling and dealing

Trading the Opportunity to spend money (not the money itself) for M's #10 prospect at a position of need and Angel's #5 guy seems like a fair return for nothing

Wow so the Twins got the number 5 Prospect from the Angels and the number 10 from the Mariners.  Not too shabby.  They could use higher upside outfielders in the minors and catching depth.  Both players are a long ways away but they have pretty exciting potential.  If you can't get Ohtani this is the next best thing.

It looks like the Angels paid Pearson an extra million just to sign.  So they get that million back from the Twins but the Twins get a speed, power combo outfielder with a possible weak arm.  We are gonna have some serious competition at the lower levels this year.

#5 Angels prospect is like a #15 prospect on a team with a decent farm system :-)

Worst farm system in baseball.

Falvine sends this email to M's

Our Final $1Million for Evan White or Hometowner Sam Carlson

Email to Angels...upon further review only intriguing name left in their system is LHP Duensing (for name only)

I would think these prospects are probably better than 9 of the 12 Braves prospect options.

Good use of international money. Still have over $1mil left.

I have no doubt they'll use the remaining $1.25 million of their international funds. They could make another trade or two for the money. They could sign a few more players or someone like Jelfrey Marte for the full amount. Lots of options yet.

They're both Top 20 guys.

Wow, nice moves to get something out of this Ohtani situation. Seems like a foolish move for the Angels, at least for the moment.

With whatever International money we have left we should package that with Kohl Stewart, Nick Gordon, and possibly Phil Hughes for a trade for Padres ace reliever Brad Hand.

Now seems like the perfect time to make a trade with San Diego since Otani did say that he'd like to pave his own way, which may mean becoming the face of a dying franchise like the Padres. Also the fact that there'd be a lot less pressure on his performance with the Padres (both pitching and hitting) (getting his feet wet in the MLB waters) could intrigue him.

Otani may make Preller more willing to part with Hand.

Yeah I here ya they are pretty depleted but they went 1 million over slot to sign Pearson so they must have liked something about him.  I still think it is a good get for the Twins.  Too bad they couldn't turn that money into some pitching prospects but the two they nabbed look like they have decent upside.

Nick Gordon+ for two years of a reliever?

I don't trust any Padres pitchers anyway.

My buddy just mentioned this- so they basically voided Marte's contract to spend money on marginal prospects?

Marte was voided because of a medical issue, not so they could spend it elsewhere.

And, these look like legit prospects to me.

Well it's not Gordon+, it's Gordon-, because he has them taking Hughes contract.

I still probably wouldn't do it, but I'd have to think about it. You're basically getting Hand, plus whoever you can sign with Hughes $$.

I'm not giving up Gordon just to lose the Hughes contract, the Twins can absorb that one just fine.

Like I said, I probably wouldn't either. But, its not just to lose Hughes contract, you also get Hand, a 2.5 WAR pitcher.

And no they can't "absorb" the contract. They have a hard payroll ceiling. You may not like it, but they do. That is $14 million that they literally can't spend elsewhere.

I'm glad the Twins have been able to leverage some of the international money for a couple good prospects. I'm still hoping they can re-sign Marte and one of the prospects the Braves lost.

So looking at the prospects returned, does this mean the Mariners are really good at negotiation? Or that the Angels are really bad at it?

I think it means the M's have a MUCH better system than the Angels. I'd imagine they'll be pretty closely ranked in our system.
