I think Moran is injured. I wondered the same about Headrick. With two games and a day off they probably don’t need 9 arms in the pen. I would bring up a bat.

Would Trades for Pen Pitchers have Helped?
jorgenswest replied to Trov's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Sam Moll has also allowed 4 inherited runners to score and has a very slightly negative WPA with the Reds. The failure was really last winter. The options at the deadline were expensive in terms of players and flawed. -
Camargo is young and apparently is solid defensively. He can take a step forward next year. I think he is worthy of a 40 man roster spot. He isn’t blocked yet. Hopefully 2025.

Isola and Williams are at best emergency catchers. Astudillo was a better catcher in the minors. Camargo will strike out a lot with occasional power. He has been pretty consistent the last two years. His wRC+ is 92 and was 92 in AA last year. His strikeout rate of 33 and walk rate of 8 are virtually the same as was his ISO. Jeffers had wRC+ of 151, 112 and 109 at those levels. Caleb Hamilton 117 and 99. Rortvedt had wRCs of 101 and 101. Relative to league Carmago has not been at the level of those three with the bat. I would put him on the 40 this winter in hopes that he can get his strike outs down and walks up. Right now I don’t see anyone being blocked.

Has Julien's Weakness Been Found?
jorgenswest replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Julien had BABIPs of .471 and .450 in June and July. Maybe it gave some the illusion that the Twins could afford to trade Polanco and possibly anoint Julien rookie of the year. In season slash stats vary so much by the small sample it is really hard to draw any conclusions looking at a change from one small sample to another small sample. Julien has a good bat and possibly good enough to DH long term or make up for deficits at 2B. He has work to do also. He needs to cut down on his strike outs and he needs to have better at bats against left handed pitching. -
It may happen. I do believe that the front office makes moves with winning in mind. It isn’t as clear to me that Martin gives them a better chance to win than Luplow. The way Baldelli has pinch hit for Gallo against righties makes me think he believes Stevenson is going to be a better option than Gallo in CF. Let’s see what happens when Kirilloff and Castro return. We may not have have Gallo or Luplow or both after that.

Really nice response after the Cleveland series compounded by the waiver loss. Glad that Luplow was on the team today. Great pitching by Ryan and the bullpen.

Get to Know 'Em: Andrew Stevenson
jorgenswest replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don’t think the 50 points is valid in the run scoring context of AAA. Even taking 50 points off which I guess would be 100 points of OPS doesn’t make up for how skewed the AAA numbers are. I think Jake Cave is a good comp. Jake was hitting much better than Stevenson in AAA this year. They both have had stretches of success in the majors. Let’s hope we get a good stretch from Stevenson in September.- 19 replies

I think the playoff will be not be an issue. Anyone in the organization on August 31 can get added due to injury and there are always injuries. Isn’t that how they added Kirilloff? Stevenson helps because Rocco doesn’t trust Gallo and pinch hits right handed batters for him when facing a right handed pitcher. Stevenson was needed Wednesday when Lillie pinch hit for Gallo against a right handed pitcher. I hope he shows enough to stay on the team so the front office is willing to drop Gallo when Kirilloff is ready.

Good for Cleveland and their fans. Sport is better when teams try to win. Let’s look forward to meaningful baseball down the stretch. Ultimately it is the game of baseball that is the enjoyment for me. I can enjoy the game whether the Twins are in contention or not and whether it is a win or a loss. This month it will be baseball in the race for the central. What could be better?

Waiver Mania: Minnesota Twins Come Up Empty, Again
jorgenswest replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
They head into the last month with a five game lead on the Guardians. Buxton, Castro and Kirilloff will return. They will be an upgrade over Gallo and Luplow. A player like Martin could infuse some energy. On the pitching side they could see the return of Ober, Stewart, Paddock and Alcala. They didn’t get a waiver claim but the front office still has moves they can make. -
Would you trade 1 WS win for a decade of losing seasons?
jorgenswest replied to Trov's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Wouldn’t knowing the Twins are going to win the World Series take any enjoyment and interest out of the season? Imagine knowing that the Twins would win game 7 of the 1991 World Series ahead of time. Why watch? I have no interest in bragging rights. If everyone knows there is reason to even televise. -
Making moves for the playoffs with Angels
jorgenswest replied to Brandon's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I think the benefit to the Angels is the improved pick (4th to 2nd) for Ohtani they will get by reducing their salary level. MLB can fix this by using setting the trade deadline dats as the one that determines the luxury tax level. Additionally they make make the waiving team responsible for remaining salary for any major leaguer rostered on the deadline. That should take away the key motivations for releasing players. There will still be players waived if they are a clubhouse issue or the team wants to give a prospect time but those are baseball motivations and should remain. -
I wonder if the front office has the message yet that Gallo is of little use. Rocco certainly is having a hard time finding a use for him. He is pinch hit for by a right handed hitter that doesn’t hit right handed well. Baldelli probably assessed that Luplow had a better chance than Gallo in that spot. It is hard to disagree. If Baldelli doesn’t trust Gallo to hit in that spot where would he use him. This isn’t the first time that he pinch hit for Gallo reverse platoon though I think the other times it was Solano batting. Hopefully using Luplow there sent the message that he needs a better option. Choosing between Gallo and Luplow there is a no win situation. His options in the pen have been thin also. Funderburk was put in a high leverage situation and couldn’t command the ball today. I think he will better the next time but the Twins do need to find out if Funderburk is somebody that can be trusted in the playoffs. Brock Stewart was also used late game early in his tenure (3rd game?) and I think walked three White Sox. He settled down more after that,

Making moves for the playoffs with Angels
jorgenswest replied to Brandon's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Makes me wonder about catch and release. It will come at a cost. The Rangers might see their likely opponent as the Rays in a wild card match up. The Rays are devastated with pitching injuries. They also see the Orioles losing their closer. Why not claim all the pitchers? Can you catch and release anyone that get to them and they can’t use? Wouldn’t it guarantee that any further claim is after the critical September 1 roster date? They will likely get stuck with the cost. They would need some 40 man and 26 man roster flexibility. Would it be worth it to someone? -
Making moves for the playoffs with Angels
jorgenswest replied to Brandon's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Giolito has started three times against the Twins this year. In 18 innings he has given up 2 runs and an OPS against off 591. Do we really want to see him in the playoffs? -

Could Giolito be a force for someone from the bullpen? -
Making moves for the playoffs with Angels

I do think they have to factor in the needs and of their competitors. The Orioles lost Bautista. The Rays have had injury woes. Every team can upgrade the back of their bullpen. -
Seven Game Lead with 30 Games to go

Another arm for Cleveland series?

I was excited to see him called up. I am not sure how the low 90s fastball combo will work in the majors but it was big today. -
Roughing out September transactions
jorgenswest replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
If players need more time to develop against lefties that has to happen in the off season or once a team is out of contention. I think the choice is whether to keep Wallner and Julien in the minors longer so they are more prepared to hit lefties in the majors or bring them up knowing you will try to limit their exposure against left handed pitching. I think they will both figure it out. Wallner has had success against minor league left handed pitching. Julien did very poorly last year. He will get there but it isn’t going to be this season. The new generation of pitching machines can help and he will do the work.- 43 replies

Watching the game I was hoping Gallo was ready to tag. You don’t know how the crash into the railing is going to go and you can’t wait to see how it goes. He makes an aggressive move to get to third with one out and slips trying to return. I like the aggressive move. Getting to third with one out is critical. It is the same aggression with Solano. If they get that first out at home he needs to be on third. I think he could have got enough of a lead to make it or get back if no throw but you take chances to get to third with less than two outs when one run is needed.

I think the Twins need another arm for the Cleveland series with the Ryan shortened start Saturday and extra innings yesterday. Cleveland as a team struggles more against left handed pitching including their right handed hitters so it should be a lefty. Moran or Headrick or Funderburk? Moran pitched yesterday. Headrick can benefit from more time in AAA before returning. I don’t know if Funderburk is the better of the three and I don’t think a AAA stat line will be any help answering that question but this is the right time. They need to be as strong as possible going into this series. I would option or IL Ober. They can put Alcala or Miranda the 60 day IL. Alcala is getting close but he will still need a long rehab. Miranda isn’t ready to play on the field yet and can only DH at best if given a rehab. I would add Funderburk to the 26 today for the Cleveland series. A left handed arm in the pen is going to help against Cleveland.
