Lets take into consideration that Varland, as the article says, has faced 2 pretty good hitting lineups, and SWR was facing a team that is struggling at the plate almost as much as the Twins. SWR looked great for sure, but IMO its way too early to move Varland out of the rotation. Lets see how SWR does in AAA for a few more starts anyway.

Byron Buxton Needs to Catch Up to the Fastball
Karbo replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Buck just needs more AB's IMO. Granted, they're worried about all his injury issues, but are they doing him any favors by not starting him more? I really wonder. He didn't get much playing time in ST either. I don't have the answer but that's just my guess. He needs to get more AB's. -
I don't understand playing Castro at over Farmer at short. Farmer has more experience at short, and Castro has more at 3rd. I'm sure the professor has something in his charts, so I wish he would explain it.

I never said I want to drop them. I do think Wallner could use some time in AAA but as you said who would replace him? I still think Santana should platoon with AK. He is almost an automatic out against righties. Now that we have 3 catchers I would give Jeffers more time at DH.

Great day yesterday. But I still see the problem with the hitting. Santana should be a platoon player against LH only and AK should be at 1st but we all know how this regime hates to admit a mistake. Wallner looks completely lost. Castro is fighting it so far. Farmer looks like he doesn't belong. Margot is trying but what happened to his defense? Buxton is struggling to make contact. Not trying to steal any bases. Thankfully, the pitching staff has held up their end of the bargain.

I said at the time they signed Santana he should be more of a platoon player hitting against lefties with AK playing 1st against righties. Granted, Santana is a better defensive 1st baseman than AK, but how does anyone expect AK's defense to improve if he doesn't get the reps? As far as RF goes either try to ride it out with Wallner or send him down and try Larnach. I would also like to see Martin get more time. He may the type of hitter, a table setter, that this club could use.

Michael Tonkin Adds Depth to Twins’ Bullpen Hierarchy

They need someone who can hit! -
On paper pulling Ober when they did was the right move. But games are not played on paper! Why not let Ober pitch to Ohtani with a lefty warming. If he gets hit pull him then. I'm a firm believer in the stats, but also let that gut feeling (which I'm not sure if Robot Rocco has) play out sometimes. Ohtani is a force, no matter which hand you throw with. Roll the dice with the starter sometimes. It would for sure help build their confidence!

I'd be interested to see how much the increased velocity and spin rates are tied to the increase in arm type injuries.

I agree the Bally box isn't completely accurate. It is however close. I don't mind seeing an ump consistently calling a slightly wider or taller or shorter zone than the box shows. But in the last few years that consistency has gotten much worse. They need to do something to either help the umps or get rid of the bad ones. Pitchers are throwing harder than ever, with more movement than ever. If the umps can't keep up with them (and I can see why) then its time to make a change.

The 3 Most Problematic Developments From Twins' First Week
Karbo replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
They stunk in ST, and stink so far in real games. They have a guy sitting on their bench that has hit pretty much at every other level, yet seem to only want to use him as a runner, and then he doesn't even attempt a steal! Neither of the 2 FA's they signed aren't hitting their weight (though at least Santana plays good D). Pitching has been mostly good, but they don't have the horses to carry this team while they wait for hitters to hopefully come around. Something needs to change and soon or they will be chasing Det. the whole season. Heck, they may be battling KC and Chi. for last!- 43 replies

Guardians 3, Twins 1: A Big Zone Extends a Cold Spring
Karbo replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not blaming the loss on the umps at all. The team isn't hitting well, especially with runners on. But the strike zone that guy was calling was so bad, and so much in favor of the Guardians. I really don't recall any time lately any ump calling so much of different zone from one team to another.- 53 replies

Guardians 3, Twins 1: A Big Zone Extends a Cold Spring

If anyone who watched this game doesn't agree that something needs to change with calling balls and strikes, I would have to think they are either Cleveland fans or blind.- 53 replies

I like Provus, but IMHO he isn't near as good as Bremer. Dick had seen so much and was able to tell so many stories of so many great players and moments. He belongs in both the Twins HOF and MLB HOF! Provus will be good, but he just doesn't have the extensive background of Twins history that Dick had, being a Hometown kid and a Twins fan as a youngster all the into his mid to late 60's. Miss you Dick!

Just a couple of observations. Margot 2 for 11 .432 OPS, Santana 4 for 22 .535 OPS are the 2 additions. Martin just 3 AB's. Is he in Rocco's dog house or does Rocco believe that much in Margot? Relievers are doing quite well thankfully. And, with the late afternoon shadows they need to schedule day games earlier.

I agree about PH in the early innings. Leaves somewhat weaker hitters to face the best relievers.
