  1. I think you nailed it. At some point they will need Varland, and my guess is Lee will force himself onto the roster. I also would be looking at catcher as needing a call up at some time. Awful lucky last season that neither one got hurt. I would love to see Martin up as well as Miranda if he can get his mojo right. Funderburk will be called up at some point for a leftie reliever.
  2. All will be cured by winning out of the gate. A start like last season would be very bad. Put together a winning record for the 1st few weeks and all the bandwagon jumpers will be back on board. I personally think this team should win the division. As far as all the Sonny talk, I don't think he would have repeated it this season. That's not saying he won't pitch well or better than Desclafini. To me that's one of the biggest question marks, along with if any of the 3 rookies being counted on will have the sophomore drop off that so many have had.
  3. I think Julian's future home will be 1B or DH. Big year for AK, I just hope he stays healthy and gets a chance to play. Lee will eventually take 2B. Maybe AK to left after Kepler leaves. But then both Wallner and AK will feel some heat from Jenkins next year if he's as good as advertised.
  4. He hasn't hit above a .250 avg against RHP since 2019. Last year his OPS .724 was his best since 2019, in a much more hitter friendly ballpark.
  5. The Twins FO loves their reclamation projects and to a fair degree have been successful at it, but at some point they need to have room to see what these kids can do. Between Lee, Martin, and soon Jenkins there are some really good youngsters in the minors with no room for them in the majors. A nice problem to have, but a problem no less.
  6. Maybe I'm more optimistic about AK. I look at what he has done healthy and I see him as a young guy who is on his way up (hopefully) vs an old guy who is definitely in decline. I'm guessing several other teams see the same thing in Santana or he would have been in higher demand getting a better pay day. After Gallo last year I am very cautious thinking about guys of yesteryear falling off a cliff. I also believe the Twins have so many good players in the minors that need room to make the roster. That's not to say I wouldn't have signed Santana, but if AK is relegated to DH or the bench how are they really going to know what he is capable of.
  7. I guess I'm trying to say its way too early to call this one of the best pens in the league. True they should have a very good back end, but there are too many "unknowns or unproven" to anoint this one of the top pens yet. I'm just not ready to drink that kool aide yet.
  8. I agree he was one of the better players of his time, but time catches up with everyone, and looking at his past few seasons it has caught and passed him.
  9. defensively yes, But he hasn't hit much against RHP for the last few years. Can he save enough runs to make up for his negative hitting?
  10. Can someone explain how so many writers on this site have Santana pegged as the main 1st baseman? I was under the impression he was signed to platoon with AK at 1st. If the Twins are hoping for more than that, it seems they will have a big hole in the lineup against RHP.
  11. Counting on Topa,1 full season of MLB pitching, Okert 2 good years and last year not so good, Staumont 6.45 and 5.40 ERA last2 seasons. More questions there than answers.
  12. I keep reading how this is supposed to be the one of the best pens in the league. I hope that's right, but so much of that thought is based on very little history for some of these guys. There are guys in the 30s that have little MLB experience before last year, and some guys with a scary record of injuries. Plus there is Rocco. He seems to be growing into his role, but if we're honest, his pen management has been a bit suspect so far. Now maybe if these guys perform at the levels they are projected to and stay healthy.(what are the odds of that) this will be a really good pen. But IMO it's still a bit of a crap shoot whether or not everything goes as good as people think.
  13. If the Twins are hoping for Santana to be a regular at 1B they are probably in trouble. IMO if AK go's down the best option is moving Julian to 1st and Lee up at 2nd. Santana against lefties almost exclusively seems the safer bet.
  14. CC is a very valuable piece of the Twins core,(along with Buxton and Lopez) and what they are trying to build. Now as they infuse more youth and talent into the team he also very important as a team leader. I am looking forward to this season as the next step towards another WS.
  15. Hopefully Margot can hit like he did a couple of years ago. I remember him being an above avg. fielder, and an adequate hitter. Miller will be a gold glove winner in the MLB if he can hit well enough to get there. That kid can really pick it!
  16. I think signing or drafting players need to be examined too. How many have injuries in their past?
  17. I agree. Last season started out poorly for a team that was projected to be a contender. Add in the usually poor weather in the early going and you effect the overall attendance. I believe, that a better start would have pushed the attendance over 2 mil. On top of that they have some pretty good pitchers that they need to either make room for or trade. In a mid market setting they are better not to trade youth as that way, they can keep a good core together. I can almost imagine a time in the not so distant future when they may be trading some good starters to make room for the youngsters.
  18. With the additions to the pen and if the pen is anywhere near as good as the projections, no way does he or probably any of the starters, get near 200 IP.
  19. I'm sure he'll be called on at some point, probably sooner rather than later. A little time in AAA will give him some time to refine his secondary pitches. With so many wanting to sign another starter, I feel the FO is probably right to wait. Varland is the 1st in line for call ups but it seems to me there are a few others that are coming soon.
  20. The Twins are rumored to be interested in Kiki Hernandez, who is a pretty good outfielder. Don't know if these rumors are true, but he would be a defensive upgrade in the OF.
  21. I agree with you except for 1 big if, AK staying healthy. If he does then maybe he puts up those kind of numbers. I hope for him and the team he does.
  22. The D-backs already want a new stadium? I lived there for a time, including when that stadium was built. There was a lot of fighting about the increase in taxes then, even though about 1/2 was on the tourism trade. What gives them a chance is they took the extra tax off when the stadium was fully funded. But that place was nice! It isn't that old. Hard for me to believe they already need a new one. Is this going to be the next demand for many teams, a new stadium? funded by the public? The same public that already shells out so much $$ to simply attend the games?
  23. Having had that injury myself, I have great respect for him playing thru it!
