  1. I think he is more valuable as a shut down closer who can pitch 3+ times a week than a 5 inning starter. No way I take him out of the pen at this time!
  2. Santana with a 3 game HR streak. Who would have thought? Now, is he going to start hitting more or is this due to some bad pitching? Only time will tell, but if he can get and keep his OPS up around league avg. he could make a difference on this team. He's still a good defender.
  3. Like all pitchers, he needs to control the location, stay out of the middle of the zone. Up and down, in and out, back and forth. That's what makes a good pitcher better.
  4. They dodged a bullet with Bowman trying to close out the game. Rocco still doesn't manage the pen well. Either Jax or Stewart should have sat on Thur. to be available Fri. Perhaps trying to set up a little more of a structured pen would help. Of course with the injuries that would be more difficult. Sounds like Duran should be back soon anyway.
  5. A little too early to change, especially with this management team. Keeping Jeffers fresh is the right thing to do IMO. Unless somebody else starts hitting with at least some regularity, at least they get goo defense. On a side note, when did the way Vazquez pronounces his name change? Or is it just a Provus thing?
  6. IMO it all starts with the FO. They draft and sign and trade for players. They establish the philosophy. Coaches coach the players they are given. While I feel they could do a better job , especially the hitting coaches, they are coaching to the philosophy the FO acquired players to play that style. The owners cutting payroll was probably the #2 for me. Due to the fact I haven't seen the books for the team I don't know how necessary the cuts were. The covid year had to really hurt all the teams but maybe some of the teams with smaller TV contracts who depend on ticket sales were hurt more. I just don't know.
  7. You're right, something needs to change. The problems are numerous. They try to be patient waiting for a pitch to hit then swing and miss at balls in the zone. IMO too many are trying to hit HR's, with the swings out of control. I keep seeing these guys out in front trying to pull the ball, as if the pull field is the only place to hit. The Athletic had an article showing how the Twins are one of the worst off-speed hitting teams. Until they can correct their approach (like Jeffers has) they will continue to struggle. I was always taught with 2 strikes, that more important than swinging hard was making solid contact, on the barrel, and just hit the ball hard. At this point the only ones I see with that approach is Jeffers and Martin.
  8. I didn't like the move in the first place. But I figured he would platoon with AK. Then they were saying full time and I wondered what they were smoking for that to make sense. Now it looks like they will be stuck with him. Ok, so just play him against lefties? But this management team is probably too stubborn to admit it was a terrible mistake.
  9. IMO they need to get back to fundamentals, something that doesn't seem important to this team, from the top on down. Hit the ball hard somewhere, anywhere, just hit the ball. Catch and throw the ball to the proper places. Run the bases. Play the guys that are hitting and bench the ones that aren't. Use the hit and run plays. Use bunts to advance guys. Steal a few bases. Just put the darn ball in play with guys in scoring position.
  10. The way the Twins are hitting so far he could be up soon. It would be great if he could hit like Trout, but then again he doesn't need that kind of pressure on him. I could easily see him finishing the season at AAA.
  11. You forgot about AK in left, as this management team is too stubborn to sit Santana against RH pitchers.
  12. Its getting late early. Last season they had the starters to keep them in the race even though they didn't hit much early. This season looks like a 3 deep of quality starters with 2 that need better run support. If they want to stay in the race they need to wake up and try to manufacture some runs. After all, its hard to 3 run HR's when nobody is on base.
  13. They better start scoring more because as of now it looks like our starting pitchers only go 3 deep. Crying shame Lopez didn't get a win yesterday. 1 mistake in 6 innings. I think once again Rocco overplayed his stat sheet pulling him after only 87 pitches. They would have lost anyway, unless they could score a few runs!
  14. What happens when they get it? They hit it hard. This is a big part of the problem so far, they have either wiffed on, or popped out. or grounders over and over this season. Yah, I know its early yet, but if they don't turn this around real soon, they will be chasing the rest of the season. I also wonder if they need some sort of a shrink to work with them and try to overcome the clutch hitting problem.
  15. IMO Falvey is the big dog, with Lavine doing a lot of the scouting and advises, Rocco just handles the clubhouse
  16. I think its the FO who hires the manager that fits the philosophy they establish.
  17. This FO is to blame IMO. Coaches coach the players they're given, to the philosophy they're given. Waiting for the big HR just isn't sustainable. A few on-base guys have to be included. As far as coaching, how about trying to teach some of these guys its alright to foul off 2 strike pitches that are close, instead of swinging foe the fences. Jeffers has toned down his wild swing and the results are there. And seeing some of these guys missing fastballs in the heart of the plate with a swing that looks like all or nothing is embarrassing. Another thing I don't understand is the lack of AB's they get in ST. Afraid of getting hurt, so they can start the season and just get hurt anyway?
  18. Funderburk will be the top lefty out of the pen by the end of the season IMO.
  19. I'm thinking or maybe even hoping the seat Falvey sits in is getting warm. Questionable use of a reduced payroll, lack of the "pitching factory" he was supposed to bring in. And I also wonder if he's calling most of the shots with lineups or if Rocco has the freedom to do what he thinks is best. The payroll was lowered, but other teams are doing better with lower payrolls. One more thing I wonder about is the way they handle ST. I get early on they want to see some of the kids play, but the last week or so the regulars should be getting 3-4 AB's to get into a better rhythm? Just a thought but the way the team has come out to start the last couple of seasons I would think it's time to try something?
  20. What's even worse than the decision to sign Santana and Margot, is the fact they probably won't move on from them as the season goes on.
  21. This is getting awfully hard to watch. As Yogi once said "its getting late early".
  22. I'd give Miranda 3rd for now. See what he does with a few more AB's. Platoon Castro and Farmer, Platoon Santana and AK, rotate catchers with Vazquez and Camargo with Jeffers getting DH.
  23. Well, he is human and, as all humans do, he will have a bad day once in a while. What separates the Aces are the guys that have very few of those a year. Just look at where Detroit's stats stack up next to the Twins. Like I said, almost as bad.
