Five Worst Developments for the Minnesota Twins in 2022
twinfan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
How can you include Sano as a disappointment? It's actually been a positive that he hasn't played this season since Miranda and Gordon have been discovered. For some reason, the Twins have not developed a bullpen that can be counted on. In today's game, you need to have 5 dependable relievers. The Twins may have 1 or 2. Having Duffy bomb out this year didn't help. Maybe he can come back next year. Is there help on the farm? Who knows but they won't get the chance this year unless we get swept by Cleveland this weekend. Finally, look, when Tampa gives up on a pitcher, you know he can't be very good. They have a history of producing excellent pitching.- 33 replies

Five Best Developments for the Minnesota Twins in 2022
twinfan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Glad to see Gordon has done well and hope that Miranda will continue to grow and Duran will be the closer next year. Was too much expected of Correa? He's done fine - especially on defense and maybe could hit 20-30 points higher . However, the problem with this season has been the middle relievers who, for the most part, have been terrible. We have blown more games than any other contender and probably more than almost every team. That's too bad because we could have and should have won the division this year. We ay not get the same chance next year. Though Cleveland has no offense to speak of, I have my doubts that we can win 7 of 9 which is what it will take. They have a better bullpen and the best closer in the league. But it's still in our hands.- 9 replies

Minnesota's Top 3 Most Underappreciated Players
twinfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nick Gordon has been the sparkplug of the team this season. While he does make some baserunning miscues, it's as much as for his hustle than anything else. Without him, the Twins would be much worse off. But maybe Urshela is the top dog here. And, believe it or not, we should add Sano to this list because he has been off the field which has allowed some others to flourish.- 32 replies

5 Twins Predictions Certain to Come True in September
twinfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Everything is in the Twins hands. But their schedule is tougher than Cleveland's and our relievers must do the job. However, if they can split the Yankee series and beat Cleveland at least 5 of the games against them then beat the Sox in at least 3 of the 6 against them, we can take it. The problem may be that Cleveland finishes with KC and we finish with Chicago. However, I don't have much confidence in our bullpen or how Rocco is handling it. But maybe prayer helps. As for Arraez, I was actually hoping Cease would get his no-no since the game was lost but was glad that Arraez could get a hit. Bogey is red hot now while Luis is tired and the teams know how to play him better but I'm hoping he can get back on track. The other predictions are kinda dumb because how can the White Sox be a thorn in our side yet we win the Central? And Rocco doesn't use Duran properly and Kepler, though good, won't be considered for a gold glove because, get this, he doesn't hit enough. Happy Labor Day.- 29 replies

What Can Billy Hamilton Provide the Twins?
twinfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
While I would have rather they kept Beckham, Hamilton can steal a base or at least provide a threat on the bases. If my idea of having a designated runner were ever adopted, he would be a choice. I never cared for him and feel he's a lesser Jackie Bradley Jr whom the Twins were rumored to be after in the Spring. I'd rather they have brought up a minor leaguer to see what he can do. Hamilton has no future here while a prospect does. -
Why the Twins keep running Archer out there is a mystery to me. He's best as a middle reliever- if even that. The inability to beat the weaker teams like Texas has sunk the Twins. And let's face it- they aren't in the class of Houston or the Yankees. But they can still win the division or slip into a wild card. The slump seems over but we now have old hands like Cave playing full time and that doesn't bode well. So let's pray. At least they have the future in their own hands.

I thought that guys like Effross or Diekman or even Will Smith could have been had without sacrificing any of our future. Maybe we will trade for Mahle if he's available. Maybe even Robertson. The only way we would get a big name starter like a Montas would have been to deplete the farm or give up Ryan. If Lewis were healthy, we might trade Correa for a package. Let's see what happens today. My wild prediction is the Yanks trade Gallo, Hicks and 2 minor leaguers plus lots of money (paying salary) for Soto or even more for Ohtani though I really don't think either would be traded. As always, today will be fun. And, like they say, sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make.

Trade Rumor: Could the Twins be a suitor for Carlos Rodon?
twinfan replied to cHawk's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Rodon would be a good add but has had injuries in the past. We have enough pitchers who are hurt. Also, I believe he would be a rental unless a sign and trade deal is in the works. -
I think it was interesting how Sanchez took a first pitch, down the middle (except for his last at bat which was a bit high inside) strike then proceeded to strike out every time up. Don't know what he was thinking but he needs to do much better. But thankfully we didn't need him in this game. Hopefully August will be a month where we can get healthy and put some distance between us and Cleveland and Chicago before we play them throughout the month of September.

I'd do it in a heartbeat but I honestly don't believe the Nats will trade Soto this year. Maybe in the off-season or at next year's deadline but not this year.

Ranking the Top-5 Twins by Trade Value
twinfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Since we are not sellers this year there is no trade value in any of these except maybe Kepler. Since he is having a very good year (for him), he could be moved for a starter and a minor leaguer or two. Otherwise I see us trading some prospects for a solid reliever or two. I'd love to get a couple of young flamethrowers like Bednar from Pittsburgh.- 29 replies

I blame Baldelli for last night. But, unless we get some relievers who can slam the door shut, even if we squeak into the playoffs, it will be a short lived party.

The Twins Trade Manifesto: 49 Possible Deadline Targets
twinfan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins are more like the cream of the crap that is the AL Central. They are lucky that they are in the weakest division. I am sooooo down on them right now after 2 blown games vs Cleveland and don't give them much chance of beating Bieber today. I'm also down on Baldelli. Dhuran should be the closer- period- until we can get Robertson or maybe Soto. Duffy has experience over the others but hasn't done well this year. Thielbar has been inconsistent. Jax has been good but is overworked. Pagan is failing at this time. Tuesday's first game was bad enough but there is NO excuse for last night. Cleveland isn't that good- especially on offense. I'm just not feeling good about this pitching right now and am angry. Sorry.- 19 replies

Kirilloff is back up; Polanco to IL as Twins go to Phoenix
twinfan commented on BigJoeGun's blog entry in Twins Nation Podcast
Well we didn't hit well and lost 2 of 3. Let's hope things get better this week. Winning out west is tough. -
Lopez or Bard would help but would cost the most. I don't worry about Thielbar having 1 bad outing. He's fine. Duffy has to be better which he could. Others have to get and stay healthy. Robertson could have been had in Spring training but we passed. I'd rather see us get a starter - but NOT Montas who IMHO is over-rated and clubs will pay too much for him. If the Cubs are willing to trade Hendricks, I'd check him out though he's older. Fullmer would be good if the Tigers want to deal. Maybe move Archer to the bullpen when Ober and another starter get well. Archer can't go more than 3 inning anymore. But it's nice to see us in first place- even if the Sox and others aren't doing well.
-
I was surprised that Duffy was there in the 9th. I would have swapped his spot with Joe Smith or come back with Alcala or maybe Winder. However, a pitcher should be able to get 3 outs without giving up any runs but Duffy put too many pitches in the middle of the plate. Waqs the new reliever we got available? We may not know. At least the team battled back but needs to put hits together. Maybe today??? And get Sano down in the lineup. He is a big, BIG, hole.

With the way teams are managed today, you need 12 pitchers around to survive a week of games. However, I would like to see a middle reliever go more than just 1 inning if he throws 18 or less pitches and doesn't get hit hard. Having 3-4 pitchers warm up then come in for just 1 inning per game can wear out a staff by late summer. Of course, managers don't let starters go much more than 5 innings anymore or pitch on consecutive days - except for a closer. Speaking of closers, will Dhuran now become our go to guy? Maybe Joe Smith to start and let Dhuran get his feet wet.

2022 AL Central Division Projection
twinfan commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Lets face it. The White Sox are the team to beat and should win the division by 6 or more games. Cleveland could be in a battle with the Twins for a wild card due to the expansion of the number of teams. Detroit has some good young arms and could sneak into a battle as well. And then there is Kansas City who will probably struggle to get out of the cellar. I can see the Twins going 81-81 and maybe even win as many as 84 games if they don't have any major injuries to key players. Depth could be a problem for us.- 10 comments

While I would rather have Pineda, Archer could be a nice surprise if he can start 22 games and win 10. His health is the big question and he hasn't had much of a team behind him recently. I don't like the incentives deal since the team can control that to not have to pay him and that could cause hard feelings. If Archer doesn't do well, we still have some good young arms to count on. I like Archer who is a local, central NC product whom I saw in high school and at Durham briefly.
-
I like the deal though it would have been nice if the Yanks had thrown in a Luis Gil or similar. Sanchez though is NOT a major league catcher. He's more of a DH though somewhat similar to Sano in stats. Urshela never hit in the minors but has done well in the majors. He can play short and do it well so maybe Miranda can be given a full shot at third. But the real value of this trade will depend on what the Twins do with the extra money they now have. Should it go to Buxton? To get pitching? Or ???

Assessing the Twins Petty-for-Gray Trade
twinfan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Isn't it interesting when people say today that paying a pitcher 10-12 million a year is a team friendly contract. In my youth, that was the total team contract for 3 teams COMBINED. No wonder we pay 50-150 per ticket per game.- 26 replies

I don't like this trade for several reasons. Garver, when healthy, is a darn good hitter with very good power and an improved catcher who could have even played first had we dealt Sano. We get no pitching help at all which is what we need. We give up on Lewis (whom I'm not crazy about anyway but is our top prospect if you believe the press). We get a decent short stop who has no power (this is not the 1950s- shortstops today can hit). Yuck!

One Twins Pitcher May Be a Perfect Opener
twinfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am wondering why Jax was not on anyone's lists of top 25 prospects in the Twins organization. He has begun to show that he should have a role on the 2022 team. An opener or first 2-3 innings pitcher may make sense from what this article says. Ober is another who sometimes seemed to struggle going through a lineup more than once. Maybe the Twins could start a Triplicate of 3, 3 inning pitchers to pitch in a game. -
Like trying to compare players from different eras, it's tough to say one was better than the other. Each had greatness in certain aspects of the game. I'll say it's a tie though I might pick Carew over Kirby if I was starting a team since there are more center fielders better than Kirby than there are second basemen better than Rod. But I'd like to have them both.
