  1. We have a few good hitters at the start and very good starters. I can't understand continuously going to Colombe but think he will do better if he is used more infrequently. I never liked a closer who pitches to the bat like he does. Rogers and Robles can do the job in the right situation. Robles should have been given a second inning yesterday (IMHO). Most pitchers are ahead of most hitters and things always look great when you start fast or lousy when you start slow. Now we face a hot hitting Boston team so we'll se where it goes. Sano is a waste right now but has no trade value until he starts hitting. Polanco will straighten himself out. I'd rather play Garver more regularly than Jeffers at this early stage.
  2. Blame Rogers if you may. Blame the manager for batting Polanco leadoff and pinch hitting Austudillo and not bunting if you may. The fact is that we left 13 men on base and you don't win ballgames leaving 13 men on base- period.
  3. If I was Rogers and this team was weaker, I might want a trade. Is Rocco afraid to use him in the 9th? He has been the best reliever so far. It doesn't do much for his confidence in the manager. Fortunately this didn't blow up in Rocco's face.
  4. Good to see Garver swing the bat well. Some, like Austudillo are off to good starts but will come back to earth. The troubling thing is all those injuries, not only with us but all around the league. It's almost like asking "who's next?". Scary! I hope Dobnack straightens himself out.
  5. Some may be upset at Rocko yanking Berrios but a no hitter with many pitches thrown can hurt a pitcher more than help. So the question is if a pitcher has a no hitter through 7 innings and has thrown 100 pitches, do you keep him in or pull him? Remember that today's philosophy- for better or worse- is to not let the pitch count get too high. This isn't the 1960s anymore.
  6. KC has good offense while Detroit has some pitchers that will make big noise in the next 2-3 years. Good to see Sano go opposite field and lay off the 2 strike curves breaking away. If we can keep the overall strikeouts down, the offense will be great. Nice to see Kepler off to a good offensive start. Surprised they are going with Shoe vs Dobnack but we'll see how the long run plays out. GO TWINS.
  7. Gotta love baseball and everyone on this list. There were (and always are) several reasons for the Twins losing the game. You could even say that, if Maeda would have had an easier third, he'd have pitched into the 7th and maybe it would have been easier on everyone. Let's move on and go get-em today and move forward. GO TWINS.
  8. I picked the Yanks, Twins and Angels with the White Sox and Astros as wild cards and the White Sox to go to the World Series. In the NL, I picked the Phillies, Brewers and Dodgers with the Padres and Braves to make the wild card and the Dodgers to get to the series. The Dodgers will beat the White Sox in the series. The Twins will win their first series vs the Angels but lose to the White Sox in the next series. At least it's an improvement.
  9. Against National League teams I would put Sano at 3B and play Cruz at 1B. Against American League teams, I'm fine with Arraez at third and Cave or Garlick in the outfield. If Josh goes on the IL, it makes the most sense to bring up either Kiriloff or Rooker.
  10. I blame the catcher on the ball Colombe threw to second. It's the catcher's job to yell out "first base" on that type of play. Still, Colombe should have known better. If he takes the out, we win the game. But he didn't. And out 2 best contact hitters couldn't make contact against the best reliever in the game. Oh well, it's only 1 game.
  11. The game yesterday was not what the Twins can do. The defense let us down, they didn't hit well with men in scoring position and Colombe was awful. HOWEVER, the worst play and the play that cost us the game was the failure of THE CATCHER to yell out "first base" on the slow roller that Colombe threw to second base in the 9th inning. If he throws to first, we win the game- period. I still like Rogers in the 9th and no one else but that may not happen. We'll see. It's only 1 game. Oh, and the Donaldson signing may wind up as the worst in Twins history if this keeps up.
  12. I always make predictions on April Fools Day because you have to be a fool to try to make predictions. So here goes. The Twins will finish first by 5 games with a 95-67 record. The Yanks and Angels will win the other divisions with the White Sox and Astros in the Wild Card. The Twins will win the series against the Angels but lose to the White Sox who will go on to play (and lose) in the World Series vs the Dodgers. The Phillies, Brewers and Dodgers will win their divisions with the Braves and Padres as wild card teams. Individuals stats for the Twins include: Berrios-16-9, Dobnack 12-7, Happ 12-10, Maeda- 19-7, Pineda- 14-10, Shoe- 8-9, Rogers 26 saves, Colome- 22 saves, Robles- 11 saves, Duffy- 41 holds, Garver-.274, 22 HR, 70 RBI, Jeffers-.256, 11 HR, 36 RBI, Austudillo- .241, 4 hr, 18 rbi, Arraez- .292, 4 HR, 93 runs scored, Donaldson- .260, 26 HR, 69 RBI, Polanco- .266, 11 HR, 48 RBI, Sano- .257, 36 HR, 91 RBI, Simmons- .248, 5 HR, 40 RBI, Buxton- .283, 24 HR, 81 RBI, Cave- .241, 7 HR, 27 RBI, Kepler- .240, 25 HR, 71 RBI, Cruz- .283, 33 HR, 87 RBI, Garlick- .265, 9 HR, 30 RBI, Kirilloff- .278, 7 HR, 29 RBI Kepler (as much as I love him) will lose his starting position during the season. So there you have it. If you throw any food at me, make it lemon merengue pie. Thanks
  13. Celestino has been very impressive to me and could be a big surprise.
  14. Baseball being the business that it is makes it difficult to justify the Twins keeping Kiriloff in the majors at the start. The entire control rule is stupid to begin with. So it will be Cave and either Rooker or Broxton to start. What some are saying about Kiriloff sounds like when I lived in NY and every CF was the next coming of Mantle. I hope he will be a solid ballplayer but it's a big reach to think he will be like Yelich. And Cave improved greatly on defense last year and even won a couple of games at the beginning of the season. Either way, we will miss Eddie's offense for at least this year.
  15. If we can get him for 6 years at 100 million, I would jump at the chance. The same with Buxton though Bux may cost a bit more 120 million. A more realistic figure may be 120 mil for him and 140 for Bux. Forget the "ace" talk. Berrios is our ace or co-ace with Maeda. He is worth every penny. How many pitchers out there are actually better than Berrios? Maybe a dozen and none of them are usually available or would sign with us. Just my opinion.
  16. If he gets 500 at bats, you can expect 45 home runs and 200 strikeouts with about a .260 average. Glad to see that he does better with men on base. I didn't know that. If I were the manager and he was in a 3 game slump I would have him bunt in one situation and hit to right field in another in one game. If he could learn to hit to right field just a bit, he could become a monster. However, he is a big sucker for a 2 strike breaking ball that moves away from him so we'll continue to see big strikeout totals- which I don't mind when nobody is on base in a 1-sided game.
  17. I would have preferred Schoop at second. So now I would prefer Arraez but I don't know how good a fielder eaither one is. So let it play out but I think moving Arraez around could hurt his offense so I'd rather he stay in one position.
  18. I don't worry too much about early Spring games. It really doesn't count until the final week. I get to watch the Twins today as MLB will carry the game though the weather is iffy. I really want the Angels to get Odorizzi but I guess they aren't interested. I picked them and the Phillies as my surprise teams this year but both still need pitching.
  19. I'm comfortable with our catching corps though I can agree with the concerns over both. We may need to add a veteran (and probably should to our AAA team now) if either of them falter or get hurt. I can see Garver hitting .260 with 22 homers and Jeffers hitting .250 with 12 homers. Hopefully they stay healthy cause their defense and framing skills are very good.
  20. I hate the mph off the bat. So what? I'd take a 60 mph single over a 110 mph out anytime. It's stats like that that are ruining baseball (IMHO). While it's fun to get to watch your teams in early spring training, the real meaning of games comes in the last week before the season starts. GO TWINS
  21. Statistics, statistics. Oh how I hate statistics- especially when this old timer doesn't understand them. Actually, at one time when I realized I wasn't going to be a pro ballplayer and didn't wish to go through the long tenure of minor leagues to try to become an announcer, I wanted to go into sports statistics because I was great in math. Anyway, relievers can change dramatically from year to year so I'm not sure I can buy into this article. A manager has to manage his bullpen so pitchers aren't worn out by August- especially the way the game is played today. However, I will never like it when a reliever comes in and has a 1-2-3 inning while throwing 15 pitches and then isn't allowed to throw a second inning. It makes no sense to me- especially when the next pitcher gets hit hard.
  22. The Twins need Cave as a backup to Buxton who always misses games due to injury. Rooker's advantage over both Laurich and Kiriloff is that he bats righty and, with Donaldson likely to also miss some games, maybe keep Rooker and send out Laurich. Or trade Laurich and get something decent. However, I think the best thing would be to send down Laurich so he can hit every day and start Kiriloff in left. Arraez can fill in almost everywhere. And why would they keep Austudillo?
  23. Sounds like they need an icebreakers session with all pitchers and catchers where they wear names of famous people on their backs and each person has to guess who he is by answering questions posed to them about the other or having comments made to them about themselves. It works at all parties and seminars that I have been to so it should work for them. I would think it's even more important to catch the person in game situations to learn their tendencies, pitch movement, etc.
  24. Hard to believe that nobody has signed Odo. He must be pricing himself too high. Maybe someone will grab him this weekend- like the Braves or Nationals.
  25. If Donaldson is healthy, he is the best. Ramirez and Mercado are very good but not as good as John. Dozier is an up and coming star. Detroit is, well, Detroit. However, they will be reckoned with after this year as they have the best pitching prospects.
