Twins Taking Closer By Committee to a New Level
twinfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My biggest concern going into the season was the bullpen or lack of it. Yes, the closer by committee is working right now but history is not on it's side. Actually, almost everything is working right now which is fun to watch. However, the relievers are walking too many, giving up runs though fortunately we have been hitting, and are not striking out enough. It's bound to catch up to them but let's hope not until next Spring.- 12 replies

The entire team is in a bad slump led by Buxton who is supposed to be our best hitter. There have been a couple of surprises but not enough to win games. And when we finally did score, the pitching fell apart. I'm more concerned that we don't move runners from 2nd to 3rd with no outs, we have no bullpen to speak of and we strike out an awful lot. Hopefully the offense will start to wake up (except for vs Skubal-not expected) and we get some relief pitching. It's too early to fully give up on some players but we can't wait too long.

Twins Fall to Bottom of The Athletic’s Hope-O-Meter
twinfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
It's not surprising to see a low rating here. But a couple of winning seasons can change that. However, right now it is difficult to vision this team even getting above .500 much less competing for a playoff spot. We have some decent players, a couple of good starting pitchers but no bullpen, no big name (except for Buxton) and no depth. Add to that the loss of Lopez and optimism fades. I figured we would be around 20% but teams like the White Sox and Angels and even A's seem to have good young players who can excite the fans so they get more votes. -
The Twins' Struggles Against Southpaws Aren't a Mirage
twinfan replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's normal that RH batters hit better against LH pitchers but I am much more worried about the Twins (lack of a) bullpen right now. The relief pitchers we have are awful and won't get any better. Can anyone throw heaters? Does anyone have lock down stuff? Other teams have no-names who come up and shut teams down. We don't. And we passed on veterans like Luke Weaver and Tommie Kahnle who can do just that. So it won't matter if we score 2 or 3 or 8 runs in a game. We won't win. And so far I am not impressed with Josh Bell. He is a free swinger at best who probably won't do much except keep a prospect down on the farm. Maybe someone will want him at the deadline or sooner but it's doubtful. It looks like my prediction of the Twins winning 76 games (in the USA's 250th year) will (sadly) probably come true.- 12 replies

I think Lewis is ok. As far as Bell being a leader, we'll see. But maybe he should get off the field and become a coach. That's where the leadership may need to come from. Yes, the players need players they can talk to but to teach someone may need to come from the coaching staff. And yes, leaders need followers as the Cruz-Sano relationship proved. Cruz tried to teach but Sano couldn't follow (or maybe didn't have the skills to follow).

What Comes Next for Twins and Joe Ryan?
twinfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hopefully they will agree before arbitration. However, the Twins are mainly a cheaply run organization which could run a player like Ryan out of town. We seem to have a good core of starters right now and need bullpen help. I hope that even going to arbitration doesn't kill the relationship. -
Why the Twins Didn't Sign Luis Arraez
twinfan replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ok. Compare Arraez to Tony Gwynn who was one of the greatest hitters of our time. Gwynn topped 88 runs scored only 4 times in his career- mostly at the beginning. Would you not sign him because of that? I just can't agree with the thinking that nobody (especially the Twins) is signing the best pure hitter (or close to it) of our time. Of course defenses know how to play him so his average may drop but, like Gwynn, he is slower than normal and, unlike Gwynn, his defense isn't the greatest though you don't have to play defense as a DH (if needed there). -
How many first basemen does it take to change a lightbulb? I don't see this guy helping us at all. He'll only take playing time away from someone we may need later on. Yuck! And why is everybody trading Larnach? That would be a big mistake unless we can get 2 quality relievers for him.

Why the Twins Didn't Sign Luis Arraez
twinfan replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I didn't read others comments but, if you look at this season, Arraez got off to a slow start- batting around .220 for the first 3+ weeks or so. After that, he hit around .330 for the rest of the season. So your story is full of holes as far as average goes. If .240 hitters are making 15-20 million and Arraez is only worth 10 mil, then teams are just plain stupid for not signing him. Too much emphasis is on barrel rate and other dumb stats and, to me, Arraez' swing looks plenty quick to be able to hit almost everything thrown at him. -
I think the Twins are missing the boat on good relievers. They could have had the former Yankee who has a proven record. Kanhle and Colombe are decent but not strikeout pitchers. Loasiga has done well. Sewald also has decent experience. The rest don't impress me though Junis could be a starter.

Minnesota’s Next Wave is Built on Infield Versatility
twinfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Twins must get some relievers to compete. Keaschall can be a star. Lee seems to be improving and Lewis can be a stud if healthy.- 76 replies

Rosenthal/Hayes : Twins will not trade Buxton, Ryan or Lopez this offseason
twinfan commented on mike8791's blog entry in mike8791's Blog
I would add Lewis, Ober and Woods-Richardson to that list. I don't think we need outfield help but the bullpen must be a priority. With the way baseball is played today, you cannot win without a very strong bullpen. I think there is potential for this team to get back near the top of the division with good health and an improved bullpen. Let's see what happens going forward. -
With the Twins being a small market team with a limited budget, I don't see the need to sign Goldy. He had a great start with the Yankees but didn't do much in the second half of the season. He has been on a winner and brings that tangible asset but we'd be better off spending our money elsewhere. And Cody Clemens may not be the answer for first base either.
-
I think it would be totally stupid to trade Ryan or Lopez...yet. We have Ober, Matthews and Richardson to combine with them. And someone said we are non-competitive right now?? Why? We have Buxton, an improving Lewis and some decent bats like Wallner, Keashall, Lee and even Larnach who could all improve plus Jeffers who has done well. How many do you need to win? I'm looking at the Blue Jays in the WS and seeing names that are more pieces than the 2-3 stars they have. Let's see who we can get in free agency and go with the first half of the season before further completely breaking up the team (again). Just my (optimistic) opinion.

Though I like Miranda, he hasn't played well of late so, given a choice between him and Clemons, I guess the choice is obvious. At least Clemons has occasionally hit well though he isn't an answer for regular playing time. I don't know much about the others mentioned so I can't say anything. Let's see who the manager will be and what the front office does in the off-season. Some have said to trade Ryan and Lopez but I think that would be a disaster for any try at a rebound.

For the Twins front office, i would think someone who comes cheap would be a high consideration. For us fans, someone who can communicate with players and demand hustle all the time and someone who can get the most out of every player's ability would be most important. I hope they don't hire someone who has managed before but was not very successful. Interesting that Pierzynski is 12-1. He'd probably be a fiery manager who would get thrown out of 12-20 games a year. Do we need that? Could be.
-
So you give him $120 mil for 6 years and he never comes close to deserving that and you have no money for someone else? I know it's a crap shoot but I don't think we can afford that. And I wouldn't wait too long when he's up here. The Twins have an established pitcher in Ryan yet they only talk about trading him instead of extending him. I guess I should never own an MLB team (except in Strat-O-Matic).

What the Heck Happened to José Miranda?
twinfan replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sounds like he definitely needs a change of scenery and an attitude adjustment. Who can tell what has happened to his hitting after the injury but he hasn't taken well to going to the minors or his current failures. Maybe Lynn Manuel can help him? Maybe a good hitting instructor can help him? I hope he gets a chance somewhere else or even with us. He could be in the .250-.270 range again. I like him and hope he can straighten himself out but time is running very short for his career. -
If Jenkins is so good, why isn't he here? Other teams have top prospects playing up here. Some are doing well and some are struggling. I would wait to see how well he does when up here to see if the potential is really there. Royce Lewis was thought of as the next super star and, while he may be very good or better down the road, he hasn't quite shown that yet.

Whom Could Minnesota Twins Trade This Offseason?
twinfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The only one I can see them trading on your list is Jeffers. However we supposedly have no catcher ready to step in. The front office will probably trade Pablo to save money but that could put us in a bind for pitching if he is healthy. As for Larnach-whom everyone is pointing to-he can be a decent hitter in the .260 range with 15-20 homers. While that is not great, it is better than some of the .220 hitters out there.- 46 replies

Should the Twins Bring Back Luis Arraez?
twinfan replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like Arraez and follow him in SD. If you take away the first 40 or so ABs this year, he is hitting around .315. The problem is that teams know how to basically play him and he is making outs rather consistently to LF. But who on the Twins are better hitters besides Buxton? Yes, we need power but Naylor? Alonso? They are both 35 homer guys with a rather low average and are too costly. Schwarber would be fine but we aren't spending 40 million a year. Would you replace Ryan and Pablo together with him? Don't be silly. Even Arraez is too expensive and he's not taking less than 10 mil for a year. -
Yes. Let's make the Twins the next laughing stock of the league. Some of these stories are absolutely crazy. There is NO REASON why the Twins cannot compete next year. They have, with both Ryan and Pablo, the makings of a top rotation which you must have in order to compete. They do need a closer and there could be some available in the off season for a reasonable price. Lewis is doing better, Wallner will be better. And hopefully Buxton will remain healthy as he is one of the best all-around players. Keashall looks real and hopefully a few others like Lee will either improve or we can get some decent replacements. We are giving some of the kids exposure and we'll see who can really help. Will we win 100 games? No. 90 games? No. But it's not inconceivable that we could get to 85 games with good health. Teams always come out of nowhere and I am not convinced that we would get enough to compete in 2-3 years if we trade them. I say do not trade either of them.
-
To us, baseball is a sport. But to the managements, baseball is a business and that can be cruel to us. Varland didn't do much until this year but some players take longer to develop their skills. We'll see down the road how this works out but I'm sure those who live in Minnesota are upset.
