  1. If the Twins are sold on Lewis being the shortstop (something I'm not sold on), either give him the position already or bring back Simmons (who can save 4-5 games with his defense) or sign Jose Iglesias for 1 year (who can give them more offense). Look, if our offense was up to snuff we wouldn't need Simmons to hit. And he can hit at least .230 next year (IMHO).
  2. What a wasted article....though funny. Eddie is just like every other hitter. He is on a great streak right now and will cool off- maybe even in the next 2 games- but has helped to get the Braves this far so feel good for him. We wouldn't have done much better had we kept him so nobody should feel bad for us giving him up. I like Eddie compared to some of what we have had but we didn't have the money to pay him.
  3. Gordon can play multiple positions, can hit a little and can run well. He's a keeper in my book as a utility player and medium term fill in for an injury.
  4. Relievers can be great or can blow up in your face. They also tend to run in streaks. I have always liked Rogers and hope they keep him. The injury is an issue but we'll see. My guess is they'll keep him and Colome' and spend their money on starters.
  5. 1- Not liking Lewis, I'd go for Correa (5-7 years) or Baez (3-5 years) or Iglesias for a 1 year stopgap. 2- We have some good arms but need 2 starters and 2 relievers 3- Gotta try Rogers in Spring training and bring back Colome' if we don't sign another closer. 4- Duffy has been reliable for most of the last 4 seasons. Thielbar has done ok but the rest are a big question. Get a couple of flame throwers who have command. 5- The DH doesn't/shouldn't have to be 1 man but it would be nice to bring back Cruz. Sano and/or Donaldson can be used if we get a 1b or 3b 6- Sign Buxton no matter what it takes but not for more than 12 mil a year (8 years at 96 mil) since we can't afford much more in our market.
  6. Wasn't it great to see Eddie Rosario have a great game yesterday While I like Simmonds, it looks like the team doesn't want him back. I would not touch Semien. He has had only 1 good year and someone will way overpay for him. I'd go big on Correa of those 5. I'd also take Baez over the others. But why the Red Sox just dumped Iglesias is beyond me unless he wasn't eligible for the post season. He'd be my most logical choice as a bridge to Lewis or ??? (though I am not a Lewis fan).
  7. Rooker appears to be at the end of the line with us. However, he hasn't played with any consistency so you just don't know. The stats don't look good. I don't see how his wr+ (whatever that is) could be better than the league average with a .220 average. I'm old school and don't believe those advanced stats mean much. Give me average, avg with runners in scoring position and how you move runners with less than 2 outs every time. As for Sano, I just don't know. I wouldn't overpay him but what power do we really have after him? Donaldson is getting on, Polanco will NOT hit 30 homers next year and Buxton is a health and returning question mark. We don't really know about Kiriloff and Larnach and even Garver so maybe Sano is worth a 2 year deal to be our DH.
  8. Great award for a great player. Congrats to Morneau. We've hurt the Blue Jays in this series. It really doesn't matter if we win or lose but what we are going to do for next season. Gordon certainly has shown that he deserves a good look and Colome' may be returning since his second half has been good. We also need to resign Pineda as we have limited starters for next year. The off season should be interesting.
  9. But maybe we missed the boat by not getting Brad Hand if we could have gotten him cheap during a down season.
  10. Polanco is having a great second half and season. I'm surprised that he wasn't a player of the week in August or even player of the month. He clearly is the MVP of the Twins this season. Hopefully he can continue going forward. I don't understand pulling Ober so fast. We need to have him go deeper into his starts to really see what we have. It's also great to see Nelson Cruz doing so well at Tampa. Yesterday, he made 2 head first slides in the same inning and continues to bash the ball. So much for his age. Hopefully he can continue to play and reach the milestones ahead of him.
  11. The Twins have definitely won so far. Gratenol may develop into a top not closer or setup man or will be traded for what the Dodgers will need later. We have to hope that Maeda will be good again in 2023 and, if we aren't in the race, we can deal him for something in the future.
  12. Woulda, coulda, shoulda. This season has been a disaster and you can't fully blame it on what we should have/ could have (maybe) done. There are players on the team now (Sano, Kepler, Rogers, Maeda, etc., etc.) who did not do the job we thought they would. We should not look back but should look forward. What should we do for next year is the real question. We don't want this season to repeat.
  13. Whoever said Sano can't play third base was just wrong. For his size, he is a good and nimble fielder at third or first. No, he isn't a Brooks Robinson but he can be adept as a fill in. Now if only Arraez would stop becoming another Buxton and stay on the field.
  14. He probably passed Lewis in rankings because Lewis is not playing right now- essentially losing a year in development. Martin is a very good prospect and probably will end up in center field (IMHO) unless Buxton signs an extension. I don't like the talk about power or him playing multiple positions. Power could reduce his OBP and playing multiple positions could reduce his overall offensive ability. Hopefully he can become a Yelich type player but we'll see. At least we got a decent player and another for Berrios. Isn't anyone surprised by how highly regarded our former starter Gibson was? We practically were throwing him away a few years ago. He has turned into a quality starter.
  15. I thought we could get good value for Donaldson even though we might have had to pay some of his salary for this year. He is a good ballplayer but we aren't going anywhere next year after losing both Cruz and Berrios, we may lose Buxton over the winter via trade and Pineda to free agency. So why not go further to obtain future ballplayers. Donaldson has difficulty staying healthy and has a big contract which could have hurt the chances of trading him if he was in play.
  16. Though you never know how he will do, which player does he take the place of on the 40 man roster? That is the real question. His signing is as much of a crapshoot as drafting a player in the 10th round or trading for a player currently playing A ball.
  17. I loved the Happ deal. Gant is unhittable but has major control issues. If he can harness his control (different from command), he could have a very big upside. The Berrios deal (though I was against trading him) was decent enough. We get a good CF prospect in case Buxton doesn't sign (which he probably won't) and Berrios reportedly was not going to sign an extension. The Robles deal could be good for Boston if he regains form but he didn't with us. I hope they can sign Simmons for at least another year. And Pineda as well but it might be tough. He may go via waivers in August. I hope they will be able to compete next year but it doesn't look good right now. We would need to get 2 starters in free agency or have the kids step up big time.
  18. I'm thinking that Kepler and Donalson would be pieces that we could get a decent return on and we don't need going forward and some money from trading Donaldson could be used to sign Berrios (or someone else). Look, I like Kepler but he hasn't improved in 4 years and Donaldson gets injured every year. By blowing everything up, I'm talking about if we trade most of our better players for "prospects" who may never make it. This is only 1 bad year in the last 4. To me, that's no reason to blow it up. We won't have some of the bad pieces next year but don't get rid of all the good.
  19. If you are a prospect stuck behind a major leaguer, wouldn't you want to go where you can play and get your career established? Ok, we aren't the biggest spenders but we develop good players and have had some success. And "sucky" teams can become good teams with the right moves. I just hope you aren't calling us "sucky".
  20. I can't see them trading Berrios. That would be plain stupid. I can see them trading Pineda and Kepler and possibly Donaldson while paying some of his salary. Robles is worthless right now so maybe a waiver deal in August is possible. Rogers would be in demand though I would hate to see him go. The Red Sox getting Schwarber is like the Yankees getting Gallo. They are both Dave Kingman type hitters (or similar to Sano). Rizzo is a big acquisition and maybe we can get Voit from them for Pineada (though they would want Berrios). we've had a bad year. Should we blow up everything and really go backwards?
  21. The salaries of MLB will continue to rise and rise. The difference though is that the teams can charge more for tickets, etc to help make up for some of the rise. Some would argue that players are overpaid and many are- especially after a free agent to be career year and those who bat .220 or win 8 games and make 10+ million or more the next year after earning next to nothing by baseball standards. But there are some free agents who do not sign to the highest bidder. Comparing baseball salaries to private industry is ludacris IMHO. This is free enterprise and not like the days when Babe Ruth who once asked for more money than the current President. When asked why, he said "because I had a better year". Or when Mickey Mantle had a great year and the Yankees wanted to cut his salary or maybe give him a puny raise. If you want to be angry about salaries and benefits, be upset that congressmen receive full pensions after just 1 term in office- and guess who pays for that?
  22. As I said in a comment in another forum, I have seen these guys at Durham. Ryan looks like he could become a number 2 or 3 starter, if you believe in such numbers, and should have success at the major league level. Strotman might become a major league starter (maybe a 5) but seems to be able to fit closer to a long reliever. He has more potential to develop a few more mph on his fastball but does not have good enough command now and it could get worse if he tries to throw harder. Maybe he could pitch a 7th or 8th inning and rely mostly on fastballs. I guess we'll see. I was not in favor of trading Cruz and would have liked us to extend him a year but maybe we can sign him in the off-season though I doubt it. He will love playing for Tampa and they will love him.
  23. Because Cruz is the best thing the Twins have and will have. That's why you sign him again if you can. We don't have anyone else that comes close and you can't get anyone else at this point. But let's see who becomes available in the off-season. Personally, I hope we can get Marte but I doubt it.
  24. Having seen both of these guys at Durham, I can say that Ryan is a beast and has a very bright future. Strotman has command issues but when he is right, he is very tough. His future is cloudy though he could be a 4th or 5th starter or long reliever. I doubt he would be a closer though. Ryan could be anywhere from a 1 to a 3 if you believe in that stuff.
  25. I'm staying on the bandwagon to re-sign Cruz and keep Simmons. Unless we can get major league or major league ready pitchers for both of them (and that probably won't happen), I would re-sign them both for next year. You can always trade them if next year fails (though you could also convince them to re-sign after the season). I'd rather trade Sano and Kepler than Simmons and Cruz. But that's why I am not the GM.
