  1. Though you never know how he will do, which player does he take the place of on the 40 man roster? That is the real question. His signing is as much of a crapshoot as drafting a player in the 10th round or trading for a player currently playing A ball.
  2. I loved the Happ deal. Gant is unhittable but has major control issues. If he can harness his control (different from command), he could have a very big upside. The Berrios deal (though I was against trading him) was decent enough. We get a good CF prospect in case Buxton doesn't sign (which he probably won't) and Berrios reportedly was not going to sign an extension. The Robles deal could be good for Boston if he regains form but he didn't with us. I hope they can sign Simmons for at least another year. And Pineda as well but it might be tough. He may go via waivers in August. I hope they will be able to compete next year but it doesn't look good right now. We would need to get 2 starters in free agency or have the kids step up big time.
  3. I'm thinking that Kepler and Donalson would be pieces that we could get a decent return on and we don't need going forward and some money from trading Donaldson could be used to sign Berrios (or someone else). Look, I like Kepler but he hasn't improved in 4 years and Donaldson gets injured every year. By blowing everything up, I'm talking about if we trade most of our better players for "prospects" who may never make it. This is only 1 bad year in the last 4. To me, that's no reason to blow it up. We won't have some of the bad pieces next year but don't get rid of all the good.
  4. If you are a prospect stuck behind a major leaguer, wouldn't you want to go where you can play and get your career established? Ok, we aren't the biggest spenders but we develop good players and have had some success. And "sucky" teams can become good teams with the right moves. I just hope you aren't calling us "sucky".
  5. I can't see them trading Berrios. That would be plain stupid. I can see them trading Pineda and Kepler and possibly Donaldson while paying some of his salary. Robles is worthless right now so maybe a waiver deal in August is possible. Rogers would be in demand though I would hate to see him go. The Red Sox getting Schwarber is like the Yankees getting Gallo. They are both Dave Kingman type hitters (or similar to Sano). Rizzo is a big acquisition and maybe we can get Voit from them for Pineada (though they would want Berrios). we've had a bad year. Should we blow up everything and really go backwards?
  6. The salaries of MLB will continue to rise and rise. The difference though is that the teams can charge more for tickets, etc to help make up for some of the rise. Some would argue that players are overpaid and many are- especially after a free agent to be career year and those who bat .220 or win 8 games and make 10+ million or more the next year after earning next to nothing by baseball standards. But there are some free agents who do not sign to the highest bidder. Comparing baseball salaries to private industry is ludacris IMHO. This is free enterprise and not like the days when Babe Ruth who once asked for more money than the current President. When asked why, he said "because I had a better year". Or when Mickey Mantle had a great year and the Yankees wanted to cut his salary or maybe give him a puny raise. If you want to be angry about salaries and benefits, be upset that congressmen receive full pensions after just 1 term in office- and guess who pays for that?
  7. As I said in a comment in another forum, I have seen these guys at Durham. Ryan looks like he could become a number 2 or 3 starter, if you believe in such numbers, and should have success at the major league level. Strotman might become a major league starter (maybe a 5) but seems to be able to fit closer to a long reliever. He has more potential to develop a few more mph on his fastball but does not have good enough command now and it could get worse if he tries to throw harder. Maybe he could pitch a 7th or 8th inning and rely mostly on fastballs. I guess we'll see. I was not in favor of trading Cruz and would have liked us to extend him a year but maybe we can sign him in the off-season though I doubt it. He will love playing for Tampa and they will love him.
  8. Because Cruz is the best thing the Twins have and will have. That's why you sign him again if you can. We don't have anyone else that comes close and you can't get anyone else at this point. But let's see who becomes available in the off-season. Personally, I hope we can get Marte but I doubt it.
  9. Having seen both of these guys at Durham, I can say that Ryan is a beast and has a very bright future. Strotman has command issues but when he is right, he is very tough. His future is cloudy though he could be a 4th or 5th starter or long reliever. I doubt he would be a closer though. Ryan could be anywhere from a 1 to a 3 if you believe in that stuff.
  10. I'm staying on the bandwagon to re-sign Cruz and keep Simmons. Unless we can get major league or major league ready pitchers for both of them (and that probably won't happen), I would re-sign them both for next year. You can always trade them if next year fails (though you could also convince them to re-sign after the season). I'd rather trade Sano and Kepler than Simmons and Cruz. But that's why I am not the GM.
  11. When you are losing, you find new ways to lose and vice-versa. Despite a good period just before the All-Star game, the Twins reverted back to losing to a seemingly inferior team. Maeda struggled with command but only gave up 1 key hit- to someone we let go. Then Rogers gives up a game tying hit- to someone we let go. Then the weird hit ending the game. Taking Sano out made no sense IMHO because he was leading off an inning. Yuck!
  12. When you are a contending team, you go with experience but we are not a contending team right now so we need to evaluate some other prospects to see who can help going forward. The trouble is that we have let go some people that maybe we should have kept and those who we have are not doing the job or have not been coached or evaluated properly. While I still do not believe we are as bad as our record shows, the team management has some hard decisions moving forward. Probably only 1 or 2 of those mentioned in this article will ever succeed at the ML level. If we can pick those out, it will certainly benefit us later on.
  13. I would stay away from Fabian. Wilson seems like the best player of those listed. Williams plays close to home and has been very good when ECU plays better schools. Norby is also a good player out of Pirate Nation. It's so hard to evaluate players where metal bats are used. I leave it to the experts and hope we can get 3-4 future major leaguers in any draft.
  14. Weirdo stats that may not make sense. Pressley had a high side and potential that Houston wanted. I don't think many here were happy with that deal at the time. Alcala had not yet had much experience. I don't know what everyone wants from him but I think he still has an upside that can help. He won't be a closer that saves 30 games a season but could obtain 20+ holds when needed. And if the changeup make his other 2 pitches better then look out.
  15. Kaat was my favorite pitcher and is now my favorite announcer. He has a great pace and knowledge of the game. Good to see Maeda put in a good effort. Though I didn't think he would duplicate 2020, I didn't think he would struggle so much this year. And the relievers did well.
  16. I guess Buxton would have taken this spot had he been healthy but Cruz also deserves this. I still have hope that we can sign him for next year rather than trade him at the deadline.
  17. While I really like Max though I have been touting trading him to the Yankees who desperately need a lefty hitter and Max can take advantage of the short porch in Yankee Stadium, I do hope he stays with the Twins and plays about 120 games a season against right handed pitching. He could hit .260 with 25 home runs and 75 RBI if he can do that though that may be his ceiling. He's also a good defender. Part of the problem is we don't know who else we have. I am not a fan of Larnach though he's just a rookie and wonder why he is batting so high in the lineup. If the Twins do trade him, I would hope we can get something decent for him.
  18. I would trade Donaldson if we can get a couple of players who will help soon- and at least one pitcher. I would not trade, but would rather sign, both Simmons and Cruz before the deadline. Cruz is still a monster and Simmons is the glue to the infield. I would rather not trade Pineda since he has been good and will eat innings. However, we may have to if he is healthy since we may not be able to sign him. Look, in Berrios, Maeda and Pineda we have 3 decent starters. It would be nice to have a Scherzer type as a top dog but can we get someone like that since Berrios may not be quite like that? I still could see trading Kepler if he has value.
  19. Both about equal. And I thought Robles wasn't bad either. I would not trade either Berrios or Rogers.
  20. It's not just the minors. Major leaguers are constantly hitting the IL though I don't know if the numbers are up from previous years. And batting averages are way down. I almost thought we were going to have a batting champion like Pete Runnels (I think) who won a batting title batting .298 or maybe was the only .300 hitter in the league (.302?) when he won (oh, that really dates me). Ok. I looked it up. It was 1968 and it was Yaz who won the batting title with a .301 average. He was the only .300 hitter in the AL that year. Oliva was in the top 10 but hit less than .300.
  21. He's probably at least 2 years away because of slumps and missed time. However, he seems to be able to handle the tough times and that is important in a prospect. I'm not high on Lewis at all so we'll see where this guy winds up for the rest of this year and next.
  22. How about this package. Twins trade Simmons, Pineda and Kepler to the Yankees for Devi Garcia, Gleber Torres (or Miguel Andujar) and a minor leaguer or significant cash. The Yankees need a pitcher who can keep them in games and a left handed hitter. If I were the Twins GM I would extend Buxton, sign Cruz for 2022 now and never, never trade for Jackie Bradley Jr. We don't need him- ever. I would also not trade Donaldson at this time. Being sellers does not mean gutting the team. Most teams who are sellers don't compete for years- if ever. I know we will see what we can get for Cruz but I would not trade him (and sign him instead before the deadline) if a solid deal isn't there by July 20. I also might keep Shoemaker. i know he's been pretty bad but he hasn't pitched in several years, seems ok for long relief and has had to regain his footing. And probably nobody would want him. Happ won't get us anything but is not in our future plans. I'd also like to keep Simmons for defense but he's likely to go.
  23. Seems like none of our top prospects are in AAA or are injured. I guess that means that immediate help is not available. Since someone like Arraez is not listed as a prospect, I don't see why those on the team like Kiriloff are still listed. I doubt they would be sent back down. I was surprised by yesterday's lineup which moved Arraez away from the leadoff spot and keeps Larnach high in the lineup. To me it makes no sense.
  24. Guys and gals- VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! for Cruz for DH in the All-Star game. Time is running out. He's the best and only real DH that should be there. I know Ohtani is popular but he's not a DH. Good win last night. Happ was a bit wild which cost him a possible win but the bullpen held the tough Reds at bay then we come back before winning it.
  25. I have to take Allison though several may never have seen him play. Bostock was a very good hitter with limited power. Mack, Hisle and Rosario are close. Sorry but I don't know much about Stewart's time with us. I must have been sleeping.
