And 2 DHs. And Gray.

What a roster.

It's wild they went into the year with a poorly planned offensive roster and it's now somehow ever worse.

Caratini and his salary probably gets through waivers though. Maybe they can still trade him if they eat some salary. That's a thing still right? The post deadline waiver dump trades?

Caratini won't clear waivers because the Yankees would claim him. They are one of the biggest losers not picking up a catcher.

What does this mean for carrying three catchers?

Did the front office forget they had three on the 26-man?

Probably let Jackson go if they need to.

Can send Gray and Roden down before that, though

Jackson has good value for the Twins for next year.

You can find a Jackson type in the offseason, they need to DFA him.  They can not carry three catchers especially with all the moves Shelty is making in the late innings lately.  You can't have two catchers on the bench.

Overall I think its an ok team,  and there is upside if they bring up the rookies which I think would be ill advised.   I really think we should have done a full rebuild and traded Jeffers and Ryan.  We will get value from Jeffers most likely so all in all I am ok with it.

I’m presuming the offers for Jeffers were not good enough.  I’m worried that the front office was worried about criticism, however.   I would have liked to have seen the Twins win a bidding war for Jeffers.  But alas …

Nope, no trades of 40-man guys after today. You can still put players on waivers, if we want to let another team claim him (and his salary).

It’s not - ended a few years ago

Yes. They have to get to September 1st with a limited bench though. Non-zero chance they end up trying to pass him through waivers at some point and lose him for nothing.

I disagree.  I think he has solidly moved himself into a #2 catcher with upside.  2 years in a row with 1 WAR is a really good, and the bat is really starting to look solid.   Dealing with 3 catchers for the rest of the year is fine.

And Gray, and 2 DHs....and Martin and Roden sure. We disagree. Strongly.

In the Jeff Hoffman trade, the Twins got some cash to cover his salary

Do you have a source on the cash part?

Edit: Nevermind! Dan Hayes at the Athletic. No specific amount yet, just a portion of next year’s salary.

Especially once Buxton is back. You know he won't be available every day.

If you are truly contending I don't think it is.  You need a bench that will contribute, trying to play Jackson at 1B is not the answer.  I do like Jackson but Zoll really needed to move one of the catchers and didn't do it.

Sure if they weren’t trying to make the playoffs. You cannot be serious about winning with this lineup and bench.

On September they will only be adding one position player.  Again we need players on the bench who are going to contribute.

Jackson has a .452 BABIP. Seems more lucky than solid.

Let's revisit this judgment when the magic pixie dust wears off and the BABIP drops from its current .452 during his Twins tenure.

He's got 65 AB's, yes he has shown he could be a solid backup but's let not make him to be the next Joe Mauer.

I'm not so sure about that, I know he's gained a following, but I don't think he's so much better than what floats around on the waiver wire that his salary wouldn't be a consideration.

Either way, they can have him for all I care. He's average at best and this team has zero business carrying three catchers.

2 years and nearly 300 at bats is moving out of SSS territory.

Am I the only one who'd rather have Jackson?

I know Caratini had a nice burst there for awhile, but I just don't see the draw offensively or defensively.

I would be fine with Jackson over Caratini, I just want one of them gone before tomorrow night.

I don't buy into Jackson either, but he's the better glove and Caratini's bat isn't so good that it would make a huge difference to me. Tempting a team to take his contract for next year would heavily tilt the scales for me.

RE: Jackson... wonder if they could stash him on the 10-day IL with a nagging injury?  Every catcher has something bugging them by this time of year.  Surely his legs feel bilaterally weak or something? 😆 Then just leave him there until needed, if that day comes.  Teams play these IL games with pitchers all the time, why not a catcher?

I'm with you. And, Caratini isn't worth 7MM to a team that doesn't spend money.

I cannot believe he's not a Yankee right now.

Maybe he and Josh Bell can slip on the same banana peel.
