TK should stay on full time

I'd like to see FSN try a 3 man crew with TK as the third wheel.

 

Not Laudner, not Smalley or Coomer - TK.

 

TK's observations are keener. He takes live stopwatch readings. And I like his deadpan wit, it counterbalances Dick's flamboyant positivity.

 

SNY has a 3 man crew, YES has a 3 man crew - both are terrific broadcasts. FSN should give it a try.

I thought the best person this team employed for broadcasts (other than Mr. Provus) was Jack Morris. How he never got more than a fill-in role while people like Laudner and Smalley get significant air-time is baffling to me.

I liked Morris as well. Smalley annoys me, i mute the TV whenever he is on.

I seem to be in the minority, but I love TK in the booth. I know it's monotone & without excitement - but I appreciate how he explains what the approach should be as each pitch changes the situation. Broadcasting standards - marginal. Baseball knowledge - exceptional!

I prefer Coomer - his insight on hitting, coupled with Bert's knowledge of pitching, makes for knowledgeable commentary.

 

TK has knowledge, just a delivery I find dull.

TK is refreshing for a while, but I think I would get tired of him after a couple of weeks. I'm tired of Bert's act by now. A rotation of Kelly, Coomer, and Smalley is fine by me. Laudner is terrible.

We've had TK in the booth as a 3rd person at times.

 

I'm annoyed enough with the lack of silence when there are only 2 broadcasters. Adding the 3rd makes me mute BEFORE the 4th inning (I can usually endure Dick-Bert that long).

 

I'd really like to see them switch out Bremer and Provus for a number of games each year. (yeah, I know they are probably technically employed by different entities but something could probably be arranged.)

 

I enjoy some TK. I just don't want 3 people in the booth. It makes my ears ring just thinking about it.

Seriously though, I know that's not going to happen. However, I have enjoyed having him fill in on occasion. He tends to drone on a bit at times, but you learn a lot about the game by listening to him. I think he could still be one helluva field manager. One thing I like about his broadcasting is that he's not afraid to dish out criticism where it's due. He calls out guys who have bad at bats or make bad plays in the field. He also starts discussion about things everyone is thinking about but no one will say publicy on the air. For instance, as much as I like Bert, do you think he would have publicly questioned Diamond's rotation spot like TK did today?

Don't think you will find much disagreement there - he is to baseball what Tom Chorske is to hockey: "who told him he needed hand gestures to get his point across!?" They look like they need someone to choke.

Tom Kelly is a baseball genius, but he's dry, and not very entertaining to a non-baseball aficionado. I wouldn't want him in there 140 games, but I could live with him once a week.

He should be in the dugout, evaluating talent.... (which I believe he is doing some of)

TK really doesn't like to talk much. They must pay him enough where he decided to do it a few times. He's really not much of a talker, and alot of times he'll say something and then explain it in a different way as if not all would catch his point the way it came out the first time. I think it's good he points out alot for the kids. I couldn't take to much of him though, even with Bert driving me nuts most of the time.

I enjoy TK, but I'm not sure it would be great for 150 games. Further, I'm pretty sure he'd have zero interest in that. Dick and Bert have been a tandem for 18 years for a reason. Anyone can be annoying over 150 games if you want them to be. In reality, they're pretty good. TK is a nice change of pace a couple times a season.

I'm in the camp that loves him as a change of pace. I'd be all for trying him as a 3rd, though I worry he would get swallowed up in that role. Bit I'd try it. I don't remember that being done for a full game.

I'm not sure what you mean by never says anything. Does he jump on every pause and cue? No he doesn't and he can comes across awkward because he doesn't.

 

But when he says something... It's baseball and if all you are getting out of it is "gotta give credit to the other team"... I'm not sure what to say.

The bright side of TK being in the booth. He doesn't really make random stuff up and try and push them off as facts like the main two or other fill-ins do. So that's a good thing I guess.

He's an incredibly insightful baseball mind, but it'd be tough for most people to take a full year of him. That said, I loved having him this weekend. I get the feeling that he's probably a bit awkward when it comes to anything but baseball... he doesn't consider how to say things like 'Kazmir,' or Richard/Dick. But he knows his stuff.

Oh, and I'd love Coomer full-time. I wouldn't have guessed it, but he's great in the booth. Really does an awesome job of analyzing the matchups/at-bats.

 

With Dick/Bert, I mute the tv and listen to Provus/Gladden. They're awesome. Not to sound pretentious, but Bert is unbearable. You know how there's technically commentating in a video game like Madden? Just generic responses triggered by events on the screen? That's Bert, unfortunately. He's good-natured and all, but adds nothing. You don't learn anything.

Coomer is always too busy trying to push the Twins way. Like how he got on an opposing player for not running all out on a play. He ragged on him a bit, saying plays like that was why the team wasn't winning that much, only to find out the player had a sore hammy coming into the game. A little more research, pre-game prep, he would have known that....but he was so eager to push his agenda about the Twins way.

TK has a very keen baseball mind but he's boring to listen to for more than a few minutes if you're not a hardcore fan (and after awhile, he will test the patience of even the most hardcore of fans).

 

And let's face it, we're in the extreme minority here. We don't care about presentation nearly as much as in-depth content... But the average fan doesn't share that sentiment.

I wish he would share it more often. When he's talking about when/why a team might hit&run, that's fascinating to me. When and when not to throw a fastball in. But he spends 2 minutes talking about how Dozier takes a throw for a forceout at 2nd base. That's not...fascinating. It's something a t-baller knows how to do.

 

Couple that with the mumbling monotone and I've had enough by the 2nd inning.

Yesterday wasn't his best. I enjoyed him more in the two wins, he seemed to be a little more on his game.

 

One of the reasons I enjoy a 3 team broadcast like SNY is you get to hear Darling and Hernandez reminisce about their eras, compare modern players to old guys, and recall some insider type stories. I think there's potential to hear more of that if TK and Bert get in the booth together.
