The Minnesota Twins Are 2019 AL Central Champs
ericchri replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Just... Wow! Never saw this coming before the season started. Congrats Twins! Sidenote thanks to everyone who's a part of TD... Owners, mods, members. I'd be a Twins fan regardless, but it is so much more fun being a Twins fan with this wonderful place to follow the team. -
7 perfect innings, so 97 pitches by 21 batters is ~4.6 pitches per batter. That's amazing to me to average that many pitches and still be perfect. Were they fouling off pitches like mad in the game?

Well you just answered one of my questions that I meant to go looking for. I was wondering who that kid was, I knew there had to be something I was just not thinking clearly at that point of the movie. Thank you.

We actually have a vacation to Europe already planned for this summer (plane tickets and hotels are already booked/purchased). Paris was one of our stops and Notre Dame was likely to be on the itinerary and obviously that's not going to happen now. Disappointed for us obviously, but devastated for people to whom it is much more than just a site to visit on vacation.

Just took my son (12 going on 13) to 'Jumanji' this weekend and it was fun. I think Kevin Hart/The Rock falls in his wheelhouse for humor, he watched 'The Agency' on a plane ride a year or so back and was giggling the entire time, so when the trailers for 'Jumanji' came out I knew we were going to it.

Twins Daily's Long-Term Future And Writers
ericchri replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wanted to sort of re-emphasize this. Some of the posts people generate in the forum comments are huge and could easily be a blog post. I have I think 3 blogs entries from long ago that were started as replies to something in the forums, but when I realized how huge they were becoming I figured turning them into a mostly non-serious blog post was better. I think it's fairly clear most are more interested in the conversations in the forums, but there's a lot of potential for people to just make that forum reply they spent 10 minutes typing up into a blog without much more effort. It's up to the site to figure out how to make that as "rewarding" to the writer as the forum comment, though. -
Rosenthal: Gardy to be the new Tigers manager
ericchri replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Other Baseball
Nick Punto has to be joining as first base coach. Somebody had to say it... -
A 10-year run as manager of the Yankees is pretty impressive, honestly. I could see why both he and the team would be ready to try something else, though.

Without Sano and Santana the season is done early again. Ultimately Santana is the only one who played consistently well all season so I'm going with him. You can pick any of the bunch being mentioned regularly in the thread as they're all deserving in their own way and I won't argue, but Santana is my pick.

Sherman: Mauer's HOF case similar to Mattingly's
ericchri replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Mauer's HOF chances are greatly dependent now on how much longer he decides to play and at what level (like everyone else, I suppose). If he plays another 4-5 years with offensive numbers similar to this year (as I write this he's got a .306/.384/.423/.804 line for a 116 OPS+ which are close to his career averages, and he'll probably finish with around 160-165 hits), and also picks up a couple Gold Gloves, he's probably going to have a pretty good chance. If he hangs it up after his contract runs out after next year, I don't like his chances. Either way, he's probably got a better case than Mattingly due to virtue of how good he was when he played catcher. It'll be interesting to see how the voting goes when he is finally eligible. -
Worst speaker of the bunch by a large margin, but still Smalley. Most informative and he actually seems to be able to communicate something he sees to the viewer. Bert's been mailing in the same performance for years now, Morris doesn't really add anything special, and Torii is a little too jokey/jolly. I'm curious about LaTroy, I liked him in the only game I watched with him though it was obvious he was very new to the whole thing, but he has potential.

Fangraphs (and other national publications) on the Twins
ericchri replied to Mike Sixel's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
One of my favorite things in baseball, when the batter starts jumping back cause he's afraid of getting hit, and the ball bends in for a strike instead. -
They managed to make Danny Rand mostly unlikeable. That doesn't work out so well for a show where he's the main character. Kinda like Dr. Strange (the movie, no clue about the comics), except much less coolness around the learning how to do the superhero thing. There was a kinda funny article on Mashable.com (too lazy to look it up right now) about how Ward Meachum was the real "hero" of the show, being the most relatable character really (not counting the whole running a multi-billion dollar company) and Danny Rand was mostly a stalker for the first couple episodes. But of course I still watched the whole season. It felt like it was finally building to the point where it was going to be fun, but it took too long to get there. I'm not sure it'll get another season, but I could easily see that being better than this one as they don't have to slog through as much Danny character-building that doesn't show him in a great light but could move right into the Danny working at being the hero (and hopefully less destructive to his company).

I'm a big fan of the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher so I'm always looking for more like that, Urban Fantasy. Not the stuff that's become so prevalent of late, which I term Paranormal Romance (tough girls falling for the vampire/werewolf/angel/etc...), which seems to be proliferating at an extreme rate so that it drowns out the stuff I'm looking for. My sister turned me onto a series which I just finished rereading along with a new book which came out end of January that is definitely in the right vein. The "Rivers of London" series (or possibly Peter Grant series after the main character) by Ben Aaronovitch is excellent stuff. Aside from trying to figure out British terms for stuff (apparently a jumper is a pullover sweater...).

REPORT: Twins To Sign Jason Castro
ericchri replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Baby steps are okay, we have a long way to go. A slight improvement is still a slight improvement, especially one that seems primarily geared to helping our pitching staff. Sure a lot of days that 1 or 2 extra strikes may not have a huge influence on the game, but in 162 games (well, I suppose he'd be likely to start 100 or so of those), isn't it possible that it's the difference once or twice between the starter getting shelled and not making it out of the second inning vs. barely squeaking out of a mess and then managing a quality start or the like? There's a lot of tiny benefits that will compound over the course of a season for something like that.- 223 replies

Falvey, Levine Well-Suited To Solve Roster Riddles
ericchri replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Actually, you are asking to spend someone else's money, if indirectly. Perkins and Hughes for instance are getting paid no matter what, so the outlay on them is the same regardless of whether they actually play. But by arguing to just chuck them aside we then have to bring in somebody else who now gets paid (even a couple rookie minimums is over a million dollars in additional wages). It might be the best thing to do, especially as relates to building a winning team which has indirect benefits in other financial matters, but it is still spending additional money that doesn't technically have to be spent. I'm in favor of doing so, btw, assuming it looks like neither can contribute to the level we need, so I'm not trying to argue against, but people need to acknowledge that a sunk cost doesn't necessitate spending more money just because the sunk cost cannot be recovered. It might be the "right" thing to do, but it is not the "necessary" thing to do. I'm sure most people already acknowledge most of my post without it being stated, but it does get back to the issue of "someone else's money" or arguments about "how much profit is enough" or the like which as a fan and not the owner are really easy to decide. I'd rather the owner make 2 million dollars in profit and build a winning team than make 20 million dollars in profit and field a losing team, but I don't get to decide how he runs his business, I just get to complain about it on the internet.- 139 replies

I learned with Civ 5 that I am incompatible with this gamestyle. I love the games, but I am incapable of doing a "smallish" game size and inevitably put too many civs on too big a map. The first few hundred turns are a blast, then I start to realize my games are taking 10+ minutes to finish each turn and I will never actually finish said game. More power to those of you who can control yourself as the games are otherwise very fun.

At one point Mariah literally tossed out options like, "Does he breathe? Drown him." And Cottonmouth responds to that by basically going, "Nah, I've got it covered" cause he wants to spend a gajillion dollars on the super-bullet thing to take out Cage. Worst moment in the show for me. And then he doesn't even get the chance and Diamondback is the one using the bullets. I liked the feel of the show, the actors were almost all really good (except as previously noted Diamondback), and it was still a relatively interesting story, but they just dropped the ball hard in working up a way to deal with the whole invulnerability thing.

Pondering A Plan For Jorge Polanco
ericchri replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If you get the right offer for Dozier, problem solved. Otherwise roll with Polanco at short and see if being the regular start has any effect on his defense, positive or negative. I don't think he's really gotten to the point where we know yet what his defense is ultimately going to be, he's been used too inconsistently to make a full decision. I'm intrigued by the notion of moving Dozier to 3rd, but we're already overcrowded at DH/1B and making Sano part of that without 3B as a home just makes it worse. -
From that NPR piece on Pence... Yeah, dare you to keep that up on the Trump ticket...

I think people forget about Ross Perot making a legitimate 3rd party candidate in '92. He got 19% of the vote (Clinton 43%, Bush 37%). Yeah, not close to elected, but that's a pretty good number considering how many people have to get shaken out of voting for "their party" like normal. His performance was good enough that the Reform party was a somewhat legit political party afterwards for a little while (heya gov Jesse V). Then Pat Buchanan got mad that Republicans wouldn't back him and jumped ship with his ultra-conservative supporters to the Reform party and the whole thing blew up from internal strife. That being said, I really hope Gary Johnson and the Libertarian party manages a little more publicity early enough in this cycle for people to stop and think, cause right now this election is between the two most disliked candidates in pretty much American history. If he could get invited to the debates, that would be huge. If he's left out of the debates he has no chance. If he's in the debates he has no chance, but he might get a good enough vote count to make people pay attention to the Libertarians next election.

19 home runs, 16 bases empty home runs
ericchri replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
The Twins seem to be masters of this. I can't find a good way to look it up, but I know I posted something pretty much exactly like this a few years ago in the "Fun with Numbers" thread. Don't recall what year, but one of the somewhat recent seasons the Twins started out leading the league in OBP for most of April and after a few weeks had managed something like 13 of 15 homeruns as solo shots. -

TD Top Prospects: #2 Jose Berrios
ericchri replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I really want to see Berrios up, but because of the service time issue I'm OK with him pitching in AAA for a while. Take the first month to see which starter falls on their face or goes on the DL and bring in Berrios to replace them. If neither of those happens, then I start getting antsy, but for now I choose to be hopeful that things will work themselves out.
