  1. 1. If both Lee and Lewis are healthy, who plays where?

    • Lee at 3rd Lewis at 2nd.
      2
    • Lewis at 3rd Lee at 2nd.

After Lee looked so good at 2nd yesterday it led to some commentary. This post from @Joe Schmitt " Wow, very impressive plays by Lee.  His throws, in particular, are excellent and right on the money.  Would love to see him playing every day there." and @Jeff K "no doubt,  this is what, I think, most of us were hoping...that Brooks Lee could be a good 2nd bagger.  Wow!" Got me wondering what the consensus was. I'm guessing most wouldn't move Lewis.

Lee looks to have a better arm, is more polished and has the instincts of a guy who started practicing with college players in his early teens. He sure did look fantastic at second too.

Weigh in on which position you think is more valuable from a defensive perspective. That is where I would play Lee. I would not worry about moving Lewis if and when he is available.

But to answer the poll, 2B is more important and so I'd leave the veteran Lewis where he is at third base and let the young guy fill in at the open spot.  Lee's defense is said to be really good - he will learn.  But I haven't seen for myself.

/ edit - I peeked in now and then at Saturday's game but managed to not be there for any of Lee's defensive stylings.  Just caught up on the videos provided in the game recap here, and I have no further questions, Your Honor.  Lee can play anywhere in the infield as far as I'm concerned.  Nothing wrong with having ss-caliber players at all three skill positions.

PS. With luck I will be in attendance at today's game.

I've been poking around and there doesn't seem to be a consensus on which position is more difficult/valuable. I'm guessing they are close and it comes down which player's traits fit which position better.

As to the OP, I think I'd let Lewis continue to learn 3rd.

But unless/until Lewis can stay on the field for more than 2 weeks, I'd play Lee at 3rd, Castro at 2nd.

2nd base is pretty much the last position I would move Lewis to.  Although sliding hard to break up double plays is no longer part of the game, 2nd base remains a position where there is greater injury risk.  It requires significant nimbleness, lateral speed, and range, which isn't really Lewis's strength.  Lewis has plenty of arm for 3b.  IF he has to move off of 3b, it probably would mean going to the OF (assuming Correa is at SS for a while).

Brooks Lee looked like a gold glove player at 2b yesterday.  He's sneaky athletic, much more so than his body type appears.  I'd have no concern playing him anywhere in the infield, so if 2b is open he will be great there.

It appears (with an extremely small sample size) that Lee is the second best defensive shortstop and the best defender at both second and third base. Slotting him at second, but moving him to short or third in the event of a Correa or Lewis injury makes sense. Lewis’ injury history makes it essential that there is a guy to step in.

This is what I was wondering as well. Traditional thinking is second would be more difficult and important. However with shifts the third baseman assumes a short stop like position for most lefties.
Lee appears to be the better fielder with softer hands and a stronger arm than Royce. He also seems to have the instincts good fielders have.
Im not worried about Royce turning the double play - the takeout slide isn’t a thing anymore.

the takeout slide isn't a thing anymore--until it is
