Nobody, ever, has "earned the right" to give up on a ball he can catch.

However, I don't think he gave up on anything. The ball simply beat him. It happens.

I should have emphasized. I stated he might have caught it. It was clearly over his head. And when I say he gave up. I mean in the sense he was going to play it off the wall. Which I'm ok with. Trout is more valuable on the field than on the IL.
