Why not just go to a team that will provide them the security of getting multiple prospects now and avoid the very real chance of getting less later? Just an idea man. I'd say Varland has a pretty good shot of joining their rotation. I think that is worth something. He's got a few years of cheap control. That's worth something. They get a year out of Max...like I said, to bridge their young OFs (like Colas). Even if Max is mediocre for them, they will recoup a little more. I find value in that as well.

Something that toxic is too risky to bring into your locker room. It's so hard to know who were the bad apples it's better to stay away. Even the good apples are tainted. IMO the CWS problem came from LaRusso, Extending his players to the point of ineffectiveness & injuries & continuing playing them hurt. That really affected their performance & record, not having that veteran leadership they couldn't stop that crazy downspin. So I wouldn't mind picking up any reasonable former CWS players. LaRussa wasn't there last year though. He was there during Cease's one excellent season in 2022. And Cease only threw 13 more innings with LaRussa while giving up half as many runs, so those fewer innings last year were almost certainly due to ineffectiveness and not due to protecting him. jorgenswest Verified Member Posted March 13, 2024 Posted March 13, 2024 Dylan Cease trade talk making the news again. The reports state the White Sox desired return from the Rangers is utility man Ezequiel Durán and pitching prospects Brock Porter and Jack Leiter. Seems like the Twins can match that with something like Castro, Festa and Gonzalez. The Padres are reportedly in the mix now as well as the Yankees. The Twins should join in. His contract this year is 8 million so it would take an increase of 4.7 million (Castro is at 3.3). If that is the stumbling block then it was a really huge miscalculation to sign Farmer. As valuable as he is to the club, his role isn’t close the value of a good starting pitcher. Let’s keep the payroll talk to other discussions though. Does the trade make the team better? What would it take to get Cease?
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted March 13, 2024 Posted March 13, 2024 I know he's been a big name ever since his prospect days, but I wanted a guy to be the #2 starter, and I don't think Cease is any better than Ober or Ryan. I mean if he's cheap, I'd rather have him than DeSclafani, but if the Yankees, Rangers and Padres are bidding on him, I'm guessing there will be an overpay. And of course the White Sox would make the Twins overpay the most out of any of those teams. Cory Engelhardt, Cris E and Linus 3

I think the rangers would easily pull the trigger if that was the ask as well, so I'm skeptical that this is what they are asking for. I also think there is little chance that a 5 mil increase is actually a barrier for a player of his caliber, and if it was they could include a 15-20 org prospect to get the Sox to eat it. The fangraphs projections are similar for Ryan and Cease this year though, which surprised me. I wouldn't overpay for Cease either. SaberNerd 1
whosafraidofluigirussolo Verified Member Posted March 13, 2024 Posted March 13, 2024 According to MLBTR, the Padres indeed have traded for Cease:https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/03/padres-finalizing-deal-for-dylan-cease.html It was interesting to see that trade rumors picked up right after the Yankees lost Cole for two months, but other teams were at the center of the rumors. Of course the two could be unrelated - maybe the White Sox simply found new motivation to make a deal with opening day getting closer. But... interesting to speculate whether the Yankees suddenly looking like another motivated bidder got other clubs to raise their offers; or whether the Cole injury shifted Montgomery and Snell's markets in the last couple days, leading SD (or Texas) to look elsewhere. Looks like quite a good package. It would have been hard for the Twins to best Thorpe and Iriarte. They could have sent Varland and Festa but they would have ended up thinning the depth. They could have matched Zavala and the reliever. Cory Engelhardt 1
Jocko87 Verified Member Posted March 14, 2024 Posted March 14, 2024 My first swing on equivalent prospects the Twins would need to send would be something like Festa, Culpepper, Keashall and say Headrick or Winder maybe? It's a lot. I do think Varland is quite bit more valuable than Thorpe who is a nice prospect but only has 30 innings at AA. Varland too close to MLB to be valuable for the Sox. Competitive windows and all that.

If they are going to top the Padres deal I don’t see a pitching prospect other than Varland that would make it work.

I think there can be a few avenues for a trade here... 1) A trade based around Brooks Lee. I'd imagine it wouldn't be a 1 for 1 (on either side, the Twins like to get a prospect or two back in these kinds of deals) but this to me is a deal that could work for both sides. 2) A deal with 3-4 good prospects. I know the White Sox will ask for a LOT for him from any team, but if the Twins came back with something like Emmanuel Rodriguez, Cory Lewis, Marco Raya and Tanner Schobel, to me that FEELS like a light return, but it would be a pretty large injection of talent into the White Sox system. 3) Edourd Julien. I don't know that I see Minnesota trading him, but I'm sure he would be someone that Chicago would ask about. Royce too (although I see no chance Royce is actually on the table. Or Jenkins) Not trading, as you stated twice, any potential star prospect to a team in the Central Division & nobody is trading a difference making arm to the Twins from inside the Division. Gotta talk about something. Lewis isn’t getting traded for anyone at any point in time. Jenkins either……as you know. Julien could be an average defensive 2B with .350 plus OBP potential every year……with 20 HR power. Those guys are not easy to find …….he’s cheap for foreseeable future. Staying put! It would take Lee plus a couple additional guys…….for a 2 year rental. Can’t do it - Festa & SWR can eat 125 total innings this year. If he succeeds his price is out of our range. If he doesn’t succeed it’s a real bummer. Sands - Headrick - Cory Lewis - E. Rodriguez - Miranda…………gotta consider that on both sides. 3 arms & potential that any 2 could hit ……..1 or 2 could help this year or next year……..Lewis in another 2 years. Rodriguez & Miranda provide opportunity for everyday player for years to come. Cory Engelhardt 1
