I think its difficult to change the rules.  Yes you can switch to a waiver claim like fantasy, however, those lower teams need as much help as anyone.  I guess the concern is, why didn't any of the poor teams try to get better and pick these players up? Its because they don't want to compete for this year.

It’s not difficult to change these rules at the end of the season. So will they and how? If they don’t they don’t see this as an issue, and maybe it’s not, maybe this year is, as I said, an anomaly. But if they want to change the rules, it won’t be difficult.

The teams that picked up players are still trying to win and still have a chance to win THIS year. That Cleveland is still in it is the fault of the Twins, imo. If they didn’t have a chance, they wouldn’t have done it. The teams that were worse didn’t feel they could compete to the end, is my guess.

Its more difficult than just saying they need to be changed.   My opinion is lower level teams should continue to have first dibs.  Players at the bottom should be allowed to improve as they are the worst.  So they pick up one mediocre vet and they go to the end of the line, while a really good player comes up - no I think that is against what this is trying to do.   A team shouldn't wait on the sidelines waiting for a team to go on an implosion like the angels did.  How do you fix it.  Your team salary for the year is locked in at the trade deadline.  It would stop this specific issue.   I am not sure what else you can do other than limit the number of drops in a week maybe.

The easiest fix is to allow the team losing players to negotiate with every team that claimed them. If six teams claim someone then they can bid against each other. Bring back the waiver trade deadline.

Well, of course it’s more difficult than that, but it’s not that difficult. Most of all the players being waived were on expiring contracts. If a team is out of it, they aren’t making a claim for those players. It will be the teams that still have a chance, like Cleveland. I don’t think one team should get to claim all of them. While this year was unique, I do think there needs to be better rules put into place for future years. The what and how will need some discussion, but actually changing the rules is not difficult.

That said, I do put some onus on the Twins for Cleveland being in a position to go for it. There are moves the FO could have made at the start of the season or at this year’s deadline that likely would have made a difference and made our margin in the division greater so it wouldn’t have made sense for Cleveland to do this. But the should’ve, would’ve, could’ve arguments … eh, hard telling for sure.

You go to the back of the line when you get a claim, but the order resets based on record every month. Solves the vast majority of this.

doesn't solve the issue of a team tanking though

I assume you're referring to the Angels. They have a .296 winning percentage in August while trying to win. Changing waiver wire rules isn't going to stop tanking in MLB. Tanking for a month is not a concern that should cause rule changes.

Edit to add: and they aren't tanking in the "trying to get the #1 overall pick" sort of way, they were just trying to get under the luxury tax threshold. Not a problem many teams have.

Moving your family over and over. Having to find places to live. Leaving guys you know, for those there more than a few weeks. It isn't all rainbows and sunshine.... These are people.

All of the these 'people' were/are 30 days removed from becoming free agents. Why would this temporary opportunity cause any of them to "move their family over and over"??

Many have travelled much farther, for far greater durations and under far different circumstances as called upon by their profession; this at far greater risk and for far less compensation.

So compared to the real world, yea, pretty much is rainbows and sunshine.

I don't believe there is a "pack" to be moved to the back of.  Guardians will be ahead of us regardless.  They can claim as many players as they want and still be ahead of the Twins.

-9:00 p.m. - good call - Guardians grabbed all 3 pitcher - blocked us from grabbing Moore
