When a team has become a sub-five hundred team, with the next team within spitting distance, you do not use your team as a quasi-AAA substitute.

Analytics is not blindly following the numbers.  It's knowing when to apply to numbers in the most effective ways.  In that way, fail. Let the computer manage if this is what we are going to do.

Let the righty bat against a righty in the first inning and save the moves for a more important time if we are so concerned about the opener.  At least its not a completely verboten sbr matchup, the numbers support that for one at bat in question that would be a better option.  Stack the lineup differently if you need to.

I'm a defender of Rocco generally but this is dumb.

If you're lucky, you may see Buxton's HR passing overhead any minute now.

Low earth orbit, eh?

Did mlb submit documentation to nasa that baseballs are designed to burn up on reentry, and so do not constitute a danger life and property?

Low earth orbit, indeed.

I assume that NORAD picked up the ball before MLB notified anyone.

It's even worse than the other night when he pinch hit Solano for Kirilloff in like the 6th. I wagered at the time you'd see Solano against a RHer next AB.

I would have won the wager.

I'm a huge believer in platoon advantage.  But gaining the platoon advantage for 1 AB early generally makes no sense. You're just likely giving ut up later.

Use your platoon pinch hitter when it matters. And when it's not likely to be neutralized (or worse) later

Do we have a fighting chance to get back to 500 anytime soon?

That involves math...this is a game thread!

Absolutely. And you're late

I don't get to watch Rocco's post game pressers.  Is he asked about the reason by the writers, that let's say chief put out there.?

Are the writers asking the tough questions, or just trying to keep everyone happy?

So, you're the Joe Mauer of the Game Thread?  No day game threads after night game threads?

Or do like Mantle did on occasion, just skip bed altogether and go to the ballpark.

When they do ask him a tough question he turns into a politician.  But he does get an occasional tough one

That’s my main beef, if we are to use a batter for one at bat please make it a high leverage situation.  Benches are short. Lead off and third hitter of the game are pretty darn low leverage.

I really like the lineup where he stacks handedness lower in the order so he can take advantage of a reliever 3 batters in a row.  That at least creates leverage.  If that time around the order is in the 6th I’m fine with that.

Yeah, @USAFChief, where's the dedication?!

70 pitches thru 6 innings.  Could we possibly see 8 to 8+? innings from Joe today?

Only when Porky does a Target field fly-by.

I’m pretty iffy on these moves but I don’t hate them in this situation. This team could really use a game where they just bury the opponent in the first few innings and these moves made that more likely to happen.

I don't totally disagree with that, but I also think they could really use a game where they keep adding on throughout the game instead of going dormant for a 6 inning stretch with only 1 or 2 guys reaching base.

My bigger problem is who they pinch hit for. Quit taking out your hoped for future/newly current core! Take out Kepler or Castro. Quit turning 2 guys you clearly want to be key parts of your team into platoon only hitters already. You should never have to pinch hit for the top 4 or 5 guys in your lineup if you're truly a contending team. They continually hit for 2 of those guys. I hate it.

Yeah...Julien and Kirilloff out...but there's Kepler.
