I agree.  Alcala was one I wanted to see before this year - elite stuff.  Same is true with Duran.  If you have elite stuff and some command/control, you can succeed as a rookie in MLB.  We trot out guys like Smeltzer and Thorpe in relief, and guys like Dobnak, Hill and Bailey that simply don't have elite stuff.  MLB hitters will adjust and tee-off.  I would rather throw someone with elite stuff out there.  Graterol last year is an example.  They can be a weapon in playoffs if eased in and handled correctly.

This is one of the many things that irritate me about Rocco.

 

When Dobnak is getting lit up why is he allowed to throw 20-30 more pitches than when he is throwing a 2 hit shutout? It should be the other way around.

 

Rocco seems to want five innings out of his starters no matter what the game circumstances are.

Oof. The bullpen is going to get taxed. I don't see Odorizzi going more than 5 tomorrow. Might have to option 2 for Odorizzi and another pitcher.

He didn’t have a good game, certainly, but in the context of whether to send him back out for another inning, I think the distinction around “lit up” is significant.
